My friends who speak Mexican/Border Spanish, help me out. I was reading the obituaries in the local paper and came across one for an old woman who had recently passed away. I read that every day she told her husband "Ay como chingas!" and I just about spit my coffee all over the paper. Is this a term of endearment or some sort of slang? Confession time! Back in the 90s I was working for [LARGE INSTITUTION]. It was decreed that we needed a document scanning, storage and retrieval system. We solicited bids and had a bunch of vendors agree to come in. At this point, everyone else involved disappeared, leaving me to sit through a solid week of presentations by myself. All the systems had the same functionality and the presentations were very similar (PowerPoint guy with a lightbulb over his head every time.) 1/2

Funny, right?
It does phone and text (SMS/MMS) and comes with basic apps. Maps, weather, notes, eBook reader, chess, music player and a meditation timer. You can add your own apps if you want though there's no Google and it has a black and white display so not everything will work. So far, I like it. The Sunbeam was good for me but I never liked it. I'll report back in a couple of weeks once I've had a chance to use it some more.

First impressions are pretty good! It's a lot less limited without being a full on surveillance phone. Strangely enough, I think some of the difference might be religious. The Sunbeam is made for the kosher community and the Mudita is focused on "mindfulness". I'm a Buddhist so it feels like a better fit for me.

I stuck with the Sunbeam for a few months but wasn't what I was looking for. Text to speech required a subscription and I'm just too slow at keypad typing to have a conversation over text. I thought I'd give the Mudita Kompakt a try. It's more functional and I love e-ink displays. The crazy thing is that, two phones later, I've spent just over half what a flagship smartphone costs. #phone #mudita

When I was a kid, we lived near Don Pancho's cinema. A storefront movie theater across from UNM in Albuquerque. On Saturday, they had a matinee, whatever they could get cheap. Foreign films, monster movies, reruns and b movies. Admission was less than a buck and I went all the time. While my compatriots were watching Pretty in Pink, I was watching The Flying Guillotine and Monster Zero. No wonder I never fit in. 😅 #movies #Albuquerque #NewMexico

I was downtown and picked up a copy of The Pleasures of Italian Cooking by Romeo Salta. Not because I had high hopes for a mid century American Italian cookbook but because Romeo just looked amazing. But, the recipes look great, a far cry from the canned sauce and "yellow" cheese I was expecting. I ditched my smartphone. But the camera on my flip phone is garbage. I got a Sony alpha NEX-5. Ancient but, by my standards, a ridiculously premium device that packs plenty of pixels. What it doesn't do is all the cool post processing. I'm used to the high contrast, over saturated images that Google photos turns out. I need to find some decent software to replicate (some of) that. What do you use for processing your photos? I need something fairly simple that runs on *nix. #photography

That's my hope. In my case, I think it was a genuine addiction. I had a bunch of anxiety about switching off my smartphone but I need to make a change. I spend too much time absorbing "content" or reading about global horrors that are entirely out of my control. Not because I really want to but because it's easy dopamine. Hopefully, by making that a little harder to do, I'll be able to focus on things I actually want to do.

I had a really nice sandwich yesterday and you're the only person I can think of who would appreciate it so now you have to hear about it. 😅
You start by making a sauce of mayonnaise, grated garlic, lemon juice, salt and pepper. Spread that on toasted bread and layer on pickled peppers, sliced tomatoes and anchovies. If you can find nice tomatoes you should whip one up.

Want to know something funny? People in Spain don't speak Spanish. Spanish is a New World language. In Spain they speak Castellano, Gallego, Basque, Catalán, and a bunch of other languages. If you show up in Spain speaking Spanish, they'll understand you but that's not what they speak.

I've thinking about this a bit and realized being a dodo is more than this. I was aggressive when I was younger. Quick to fight, I always tried to project an aura of strength and toughness. I don't want that anymore. I want to be nice. I want to be goofy and nonthreatening. I want to assume the best about people. I want to be remembered as kind and simple. I want to be a dodo.

The combination of injury, travel and a lingering respiratory infection kept me fairly inactive for the last couple of months. I've been easing back into things with walking and yoga. Yesterday was my first day back to running and weights and boy am I feeling it. Good form is crucial to keeping me going as I age so I was really working on leading with my knees and kicking up my heels. My glutes and low back are especially grumpy. Today is recovery, some yin yoga and a walk. #running #yoga

The Sierra Ladrones are a small mountain range in New Mexico, located west of the Rio Grande between Albuquerque and Socorro. The name means mountain of thieves. Supposedly, back in the days of the Spanish Crown, a pair of large solid gold candlesticks were sent from Mexico City to the archdiocese of Santa Fe. The caravan was waylaid and the bandits hid their loot on Ladrone peak but died before they could return for it. Do they actually exist? Who knows?

I love fresh tortillas but I always have bad luck with the tortilla press. They stick, they tear, they end up dry, the whole thing feels like a production. So, I almost never make them. Today, I thought: what if I just skip all that and make them by hand? Long story short, they turned out great! They aren't tortillas in the traditional sense but they're sturdy enough to stand up to salsa and soft enough to fold around a pile of beans. Yay! #food #tortillas #breakfast

We might actually see some freezing temps here. I'm going to have to harvest my aji rojo chiles and prune the plant back so I can bring it indoors. I've probably got a pound or two of these small red chilies. Aji Rojo isn't spicy but otherwise tastes like a habanero. They keep well but I'm not going to eat them all before they go bad. I got the f-key line turned off (SCREEN 0,0) so things look better. I thought it might be fun to have the walk flip bits on the screen rather than just turning them on. Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, N82 basic doesn't have the capacity to examine the screen. Hopefully I can figure out where the LCD controller is and PEEK at its RAM directly. #retrocomputing #modelt #basic

A couple of summers ago we were on our way to Yellowstone and stopped off at the Idaho Potato museum. As you do. 😂
It was surprisingly fun! They had potato vr, creepy animatronic potatoes, potato video games, potato racing and potato cupcakes that were delicious! If you're ever in Blackfoot Idaho, you've got to check it out!

Here's a nice bit of Spanish for you. Tocayo is what you call someone who has the same name as you. I often see it translated as namesake but it really doesn't mean that you're named after the other person. Tocayo just a way of acknowledging that you share a name.

Block me if you must but I don't mind instant coffee. Probably because I'm used to cowboy coffee (which is objectively terrible). It's quick and easy and gets the job done. Lately, there's even been a trend towards instant coffee that's actually pleasant tasting. Like this UCC 118 that I got at Lee Lee down in Tucson. Not bad! I would drink it on purpose. #coffee #sacrilege

I bought one and it was okay. Mine didn't have a strainer so I still had to filter the milk and it was actually more difficult to clean than the blender because it couldn't go in the dishwasher. Finally, I've got a big family and it made fairly small batches. Maybe not an issue if it's just the two of you but I would have to run it every day.

I bought a dedicated GPS that works way better than my phone. YouTube is becoming less and less useful by the day. Google is blocking side loading of apps. And, Gemini AI is in everything. I think I may be holding my last Pixel phone. Luckily the market for semi-dumb phones has been getting more and more interesting lately.

I spend a lot of my time in rural mining communities in Arizona. I'm surrounded by far right corporatist politics, environmental destruction and all the other horrors of terminal capitalism. Because of this I try to focus my time on mastodon on things that a interesting, beautiful and uplifting. But sometimes I get tired and grumpy. Here's the piece of obsidian that scratched up my phone. It's opaque so not much interest to jewelers but, judging from the flakes I found, people were clearly using the larger chunks to make tools.
