Today I searched for hull-less oats, having only briefly read about them earlier in the year. This type of oats, originally from China, are much easier to grow on a small scale as they do not require heat processing to remove the hulls. You can grow enough on 150sqm to likely be self sufficient for a year (unless you really really REALLY like oats eg want them for every meal).
These oats prefer no synthetic fertilisers and can grow just about anywhere in any type of soil and a range of climates. And they are hard to process industrially. So they weren't coming up with various searches and certainly are not available commercially in Australia.
Ask high school BFF (who owns land that had previously had oats grown on it) , and she gives me a link to the Victorian Agriculture Seed Database, which links to the Australian Grains Genebank GRIN-Global Database System.
I have now placed an order for 4 different strains of hull-less oats.

Gardening continues. I only have 5 raised planter boxes and only got them going earlier this year, with a bit of winter sowing, less summer stuff as I knew we would be away for 6 weeks.
But the first potatoes are just starting to be ready to dig up and I'm soooo happy!
These were the lowest effort planting of all. Old potatoes from the potato farm in #Erica (5 min down the road) had been left in their bag for months and grown... a lot. So they are local & acculturated to the climate, but not seed potatoes. I just chucked them in the ground... I was expecting small potatoes... but two of these are very much standard size!
I think I put seaweed on them twice earlier on, maaaybe.
I spread out planting over maybe a month, so we will get more maturing later, only some are ready now.
There will be LOADS more, I just bandicooted around for 15 seconds and pulled up enough for dinner 😝
We have made 1 large potato into French fries, and the rest mashed with cream & butter 😋

Ok, here's an experiment.
I just had a person come to mind from my past, that I am wondering if the Fediverse might help me find: a general web search so far has not come up with anything.
I've been doing decolonisation work, and one aspect of indigenous culture which I've been pondering is oral storytelling. That cultural method of passing information survived for so long before the written word was invented and became dominant (and here you are, reading this, thanks to this technology).
When I was a travelling in the 90s, I met a storyteller going by the name of Dorje busking in Edinburgh. He had previously been a lawyer in Lancashire, had created a room in his home that was a "padded cell", and at some point decided that whole career was bullshit and he gave up everything and became a travelling storyteller. He played a small lap harp, which he had a case for and which I decorated for him. He had a partner called Abby the time, they had a dog.
I'm wondering if this sounds familiar to anyone here in the Fediverse? Tagging below for relevance, boosts appreciated if you are an older Fediversian and are UK based.

DAMMIT I just had a nearly completed post get eaten by #tuskyapp, has this happened to anyone else? It's mother first time. It doesn't save as a draft like apps for other things do when there's a glitch. So frustrating. Can anyone tell me if they have better experiences along these lines with other #mastodon Android apps? I love #Tusky but this does suck a bit 🙁

correct. So having lithium batteries close to even a small amount of fuel required for a HEV to function (I assume, have never owned one) seems a recipe for disaster. What I object to is the sensationalism when it's not yet known what caused the fire, and the assumption that it is always BEVs, when that is actually rarely the case. I'm not a fan of HEVs, they are more complex than either BEV or ICE, and they keep us using more oil for longer (even though it is less, BEVs are better).

yes, there has been a lot of sensationalism around the risks of EV fires especially on ships, but the actual risk is mostly HEVs: BEVs catch fire incredibly rarely, but HEVs catch fire much more often than ICE vehicles, unfortunately the combination of combustion fuels AND lithium batteries is particularly dangerous. Who knew?
People need to understand BEVs are MASSIVELY safer.

is good that we can learn things our parents didn't! I also no longer get cavities myself because I don't eat carbohydrates in the morning. I think genetics can play a role too, I know some kids that have been given the right routine but still have some issues.
