Linux 7.0 has now been tagged, coming with 19 commits upstreamed from the Librem 5 tree - two by NXP and the rest by yours truly on behalf of @npub1qy0…nsak. Three more are already queued for 7.1.
While the mainline kernel still can't drive the display without extra patches, it's very close now 👀

Incidentally, I think attempting to apply the feedback from the gauge series would be a good start! It's self-contained and I haven't touched it for a while so we wouldn't step on each other's feet, as I've been reworking some other stuff for mainlining recently too.
The TPS65982 stuff is very entangled with other drivers, firmware config etc. so I'd leave that one for later.

Generally, aside of really recent stuff, things that stay downstream usually have a reason to stay there. Some reasons are easier to get rid of than others though, so I can help point you in their direction.

There are many things in there that could be reworked for mainlining relatively easily, but I have a whole distro to maintain as well and nobody else has really worked on the kernel for a while now, so help would certainly be appreciated ☺️

Note that there's a 6.18 tree for some time now where the only things left to do aside of cleaning it up is to forward-port the Redpine and DisplayPort/HDMI drivers. The latter I already have mostly working by pulling the latest version from the NXP tree, but I haven't yet decided if this is actually how we want to proceed with it.
I have already sent several upstreamable patches recently that got applied for 7.0 and 7.1, but most of the others will need some extra work.

So has the one I do, it gets tons of flak, but it hits somewhat different when it's not some random confused "fan" but the main face behind a well-known project that threatens you personally to hamper your professional carrier just because they didn't like getting their bullshit corrected.

I believe that some people who are capable of moving away from Android haven't done so yet, for whatever reason. Sometimes they may be capable, but unwilling to give some convenience away - and using Android in a society that expects you to use it is surely more convenient. It's up to them to take action to make things better, not "manufacturers".
There are also many people who aren't, but you can't expect those to move yet. Obviously. We still need to pave them the way there.

You're attributing things to me that I've never said. That's pretty damn un-excellent.
Would I prefer it to be an open platform? Of course I would, but it never really was, otherwise we wouldn't have this discussion right now. It was made to make this possible. We can't rely on Google keeping it "open enough" and we can't rely on the society not making it mandatory to use without active resistance, which includes (but isn't limited to) moving away from Android whenever possible.

The phones already exist; now it's up to users to adopt them and, if necessary, improve them to match their needs.
I don't see Google closing Android down as a threat to me. If anything, it may make more people actually interested in the alternatives. What is an actual threat to me are institutions and companies assuming that I'm running either Android or iOS. As things are right now, I can manage to live without them just fine, but things keep moving in the wrong direction.

The Librem 5 (and mobile GNU/Linux in general) has matured a lot over the years, but there are still some areas where the software stack is behind the hardware capabilities. Some of them are often talked about, such as camera quality or GPU (GLES3/Vulkan/OpenCL), but there are also lesser known ones in need of some plumbing and middleware infrastructure. Maybe you'll find something interesting to hack on there?

Many years ago I spent some time playing with running a graphical interface from chrooted Debian userspace on a jailbroken 1st gen Kindle Paperwhite. I posted a video that showed it and called it "Debian on Kindle Paperwhite". Some tech media had then picked it up and reported on Debian running on Kindle.

Looks like my old patch for workarounding Electron/Chromium bugs in Squeekboard (inspired by a solution used by Gamescope) has been finally merged and released in v1.42.1. It used to exacerbate another preexisting issue, but it now got fixed too. No more randomly broken keys in poorly behaving apps! 😌

I had been there many years ago, confused about why shouldn't I keep debian/ dir upstream even though I was the one packaging my own thing in Debian. Only after getting more familiar with how things work I realized it makes perfect sense given the Debian's processes. I don't think it's fair to characterize it as "hostile".
It may still be valuable to maintain debian/ upstream though, but distinct from the distro packaging (usually for CI or for self-compiled dev builds).

ChatGPT helped me once. I asked it about doing something in the PDF syntax. I could then completely ignore the nonsense it spewed, but use the terminology it used to find the relevant part of spec instead of Adobe Acrobat tutorials that search engines were very stubbornly providing me with 😜

Joints seem to be better now, but I didn't mention one thing - no matter how much hot air I blow at it or what I do with soldering iron, I can't seem to be able to get rid of a short between D+/D- on a passthrough port 😭 It's not critical, the important parts are already operational, but it would be nice to get USB 2.0 passthrough working too! I'm assuming it's on the USB-C plug, but it all looks perfectly fine to my eye 😫 I should finally get some proper flux I guess... #soldering #diy

Took me 3 days of soldering, but it works!
I can connect it to a Librem 5 and it automatically does all the needed PD stuff to expose its UART over USB-C 😁 It's also capable of a lot of other PD magic as a USB PD analyzer / injector / filter.
However, while these solder joints made a good job lasting till I got the firmware PoC working, it doesn't seem like they're going to last much longer... More soldering ahead 😫

That said, you don't need huge powerful but complex tools like #darktable or #rawtherapee to make your photos look better. Imagine a simple to use app that lets you do basic stuff on the phone, like white balance or contrast correction, which could then take its time exporting at full res with all the heavy noise reduction algos without annoying the user while taking photos.
Does that sound like something you'd like to work on? 😁

For practical reasons, photos that you #ShotOnLibrem5 are processed into JPEGs with lower quality than what the camera can do. There are some (complex) ways in which this processing could be made faster and therefore cram more pixels and algorithms that make things prettier, but meanwhile...
Each photo you take is stored as both raw DNG and processed JPG - so you can go back to raw data and retroactively gain quality. See https://dosowisko.net/l5/photos/ for an example.
