I’m glad to live in a world where some guy in Ontario doesn’t have buyer’s remorse about his CD ROM drive.

New batch of Macintosh magazine cover discs just landed! I’ll start digitizing and archiving these over the weekend.
On first look, there are a good amount in here that I’ve never come across in digital form, so I’m excited to get these into Internet Archive.

With some editorial decisions and BlueSCSCI shenanigans, I was able to make my entire library of 422 commercial game demos for Classic Macintosh systems available via #GlobalTalk . Come grab one!

I remember that pattern a lot too... some software would refuse to launch from a write-protected disk. It's worth a shot! ... And sadly, looks like no dice. Thanks for suggesting it.

I think these are the files the installer is looking for. https://discmaster.textfiles.com/view/17834/MacAddict%20S%20Games.iso/Game%20Demos/Zork%20Nemesis/Zork%20Nemesis%20Demo%20Installer/Zork%20Nemesis%20Demo%20Installer.rsrc/STR%23_5000.txt
I wonder if *ZNemDemo* had been an invisible folder that MacAddict was supposed to include on the CD somewhere, but missed because of the invisibility flag.

The installer on this CD https://archive.org/details/mac-addict-s-utilities is 288K, which usually means there are invisible files hidden somewhere on the CD. Looking around with Greg's Browser, nothing stands out except for that "find me" text file at the root. Maybe that's a pointer to the rest of the installer files or something? ...

I've run across this Zork Nemesis demo on maybe a half-dozen magazine cover CDs, and it fails to install - with the same error message - on every Mac OS version, emulator, or physical computer I try. Has anyone ever actually installed this? Was Infocom distributing a broken installer for years, and no CD editor noticed?

The Mac mini "Core 2 Duo" 2.66 (Mid-2010) is the fastest Mini that will run Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard), which is the first Intel-only Mac OS. It's notably noisier than the other minis, and I wonder if this is because I got the "server" model. https://everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_mini/specs/mac-mini-core-2-duo-2.66-mid-2010-server-specs.html

The Mac Mini Core 2 Duo 2.0 (2007) is the fastest Intel-based Mini that will run Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger). Its "Penryn" CPU requires a late build of Tiger to boot (10.4.10), and I had the best luck using the original system restore CDs from Macintosh Garden.

The Mac Mini G4/1.5 is the fastest PowerPC Mac Mini, and it runs every Mac OS version from Classic (with a ROM upgrade) through Leopard. Along with its age, this range makes it the hardest one to find. https://everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_mini/specs/mac_mini_g4_1.5.html

Mac Minis aren't hard to come by. It was straightforward to find each of the specific models I wanted. They aren't the fastest, and there's no G3 or G5 option, but they're low power, compact, and quiet. Just what I was looking for.

I put together a build farm for the Tiger/Leopard/Snow Leopard software project I'm working on right now, and if I say so myself it's quite cute.

A lot of the Tiger/Leopard era Macintoshes I'm a little obsessed with right now don't support booting from USB, and some of their optical drives aren't in great shape. This FireWire drive is saving the day.

I use Homebrew every day on modern Macs, and having it available on a retro Mac feels a little bit like magic. Thanks, @npub1eh5…yenk !
