Have you ever wondered about rheumatoid arthritis but were afraid to ask? Do you want to know my story? #ChronicIllness #ChronicPain
First: RA is an autoimmune disorder where the immune system attacks healthy joint tissue. It’s debilitatingly painful, causes joint deformation, and is difficult to treat in some (lucky me). It can affect organs, too.
Second: Osteoarthritis is common, age related, and happens gradually over time to most who live long enough or have had joint injuries. It’s not autoimmune, it occurs naturally.
Let me show you with these two photos of my hands:
The first one was taken in 2017 when I *first* had symptoms but was dismissed for the next 6 years. At that time, I was diagnosed with hEDS connective tissue disorder (correct) and it wasn’t further investigated as autoimmune pain (wrong). I finally got diagnosed with RA in 2023.
The second one was taken this morning. This hand now has constant pain and stiffness. I’m on 3 different medications trying to keep my disease under control.
I’ve used my hands my whole life to enjoy many different hobbies (sports, music, photography). It’s been devastating to lose, but I’m doing my best.

Me: “OK, if it’s that easy, why aren’t you doing it??”
Them: *crickets*
You’ll sometimes see people talking shit about 3D printing businesses, and it’s for good reason. Many of them are farms, or don’t care about the quality of an individual item/customer, and focus on mass production and the lowest sellable quality. Yes, I hate them too.
What I do is different. It’s a craft, a slow methodical process of creating art that someone else is choosing to trust me to create for them to use in their everyday lives.
I wish more people understood that running a shop is more than pressing print. That’s like 5% of my job. #BrittBuilds3D

First thing this morning I had to take apart one of the filament feeding units (AMS) for my 3D printer… hunting for a piece of filament that broke off inside.
This lil buddy caused a *lot* of trouble … but it’s the risk of working with so many different colours and types of filaments. I’m always changing them out. It was bound to happen after over 5k print hours!

As I’m testing new fidgets for the shop, it's never lost on me how absolutely ironic it is that I have rheumatoid arthritis that primarily affects my hands/thumbs/wrist... yet I make fidget toys for a living.
Oh, the irony. It doesn't escape me.

I scheduled a haircut 2 weeks ago... hoping I'd feel well enough to go. Welp.
I haven't had a cut since February, and I feel like shit today. My entire morning has been trying to manage it, resting, taking extra pain meds and headache meds, hoping I can make the appointment.
As time has gone by, it's not going to happen.
This is the part of chronic illness that so many people never see. We hope, we pace, but sometimes we have to cancel. It's devastating and embarrassing. Often, we get judged or cause frustration for others -- but they have NO idea the battle we are fighting. No idea.

TW: medical chat about neuro stuff : carpal tunnel
I’ve developed persistent pins and needles in my right hand/fingers. It’s around my worst rheumatoid arthritis joints (right wrist/thumb). It isn’t inflamed or swollen and none of my regular at home treatments are touching it. It’s painful.
Ugh. 😑
I have had an EMG done bilaterally showing neuro issues centrally and peripherally. I’ve had carpal tunnel on both sides for the last 15ish years, so it’s not new to me, but this feels like it’s come out of nowhere.
Anyone else deal with #autoimmune issues and flare ups of carpal tunnel?
I’m usually great at knowing my own body and being able to treat anything going on but this… yikes. I feel helpless.

Friends, I have story. Please laugh with me...
So, someone stopped by a bit ago to pick up some fidgets in person. They looked at me and said, “oh, you look so familiar!” ... I replied, “oh, yeah, I get that a lot." (which is true) and laughed it off.
They then asked, “Are you a nurse? do you work at the (insert hospital name).”
I replied: ... "no.... ... but I am at the hospital often.” (BRITT WHY DID YOU SAY THE QUIET PART OUT LOUD. LMAO)
I then stumbled a bit and made a silly joke about how I am there often for issues related to RA.
What a funny moment. We both laughed a lot.

Soooooo…. I invested in a new 3D printer for the shop and it shipped out yesterday!!
I’m absolutely stoked because this will allow me to create things I haven’t been able to make before, plus, nearly half my production time for some models and virtually eliminate waste.
Now, I’m furiously trying to sketch out a new layout for my tiny little print room, optimizing every inch of workspace/wall space/shelving.
I’ll post photos when it’s all done! I don’t think I’ve ever shared my printing space on here before.

Good to know about the magnetic fidgets. I did adjust the descriptions to explain that they’re not silent -/ I’m working on possibly offering versions where they don’t make as much noise, but that’s hard to do with the magnet strength and the texture to help the magnets move. The smaller ones with only 12 magnets and a smooth finish are quiet though! My wife uses them all the time in sessions wit clients. :)
Anyway - so sorry for my wall of text. Let me know if you need something quieter, and I’ll work on doing prototypes sooner. :ACNH_Love:

Let’s talk about ethics as it relates to running a 3D printing business:
One of the biggest aspects of this for me is making sure that the object I’m printing for my customer is the highest quality possible. Sure, I can print something and it’ll be ‘good enough’ but is that ethical to sell? I don’t think so.
—> Claibrating filaments, prototyping and testing is critical to selling ethically.
See example: the left object in each photo is printed using incorrect calibrations. The right object is correctly calibrated. This results in a smoother finish and a much nicer product for the customer.
Thought: Sure, you can buy the cheaper version of a 3D printed product online, but is that maker centring ethics and customer care in their business model? I do. :cat_heart:

My 3d printers are closing in on 5k hours… the last day, I had to do a bunch of troubleshooting and unscheduled maintenance.

Huzzah! It’s done and they’re both up and working beautifully again. Although, I have the itch to add another printer (or 2) because my production time is much longer than I want it to be. Scaling up is needed. Soon… I can dream. 💭

After *many* requests, I finally have some adorable Axolotl flexi toys printed! :chickArtist:

As someone living with #MECFS and a multitude of other chronic health *situations*, it’s the oddest things that put me into a PEM cycle.
1) photography for my small business. The cognitive process of thinking of how to place the items, and the physical fatigue of doing so, plus the act of taking photos in bright light… it’s the hardest part of my job and takes *weeks* for 2-4 new listings to get posted.
2) Cooking. Again, both physical and cognitive processes that, if I’m not careful and pace myself, will put me into bed recovering for 2-5 days afterward.
Also, before anyone says they get tired “doing life”, too, please don’t. It’s dismissive. PEM (post-exertional malaise) is a clinically significant worsening of symptoms like fatigue, pain, and cognitive function following minor physical or mental exertion in people with ME/CFS an can be delayed 12-72 hours, but can last weeks or days - so pacing myself is key. MECFS patients also have worse quality of life than virtually all others with chronic illness, its critically low.

Secret unlocked:
Take your biologic medication in the mid afternoon so it doesn’t wear off before you wake up the next morning, causing you to be in pain every morning.
Stat buffs:
- better sleep
- better mood
- more productivity in the morning
- less swelling and joint stillness in the am (particularly my hands.)
- get more work done, earlier.
- afternoon naps
10/10 would recommend.

An example of how two things can be true and exist simultaneously and the complexity of holding that:
1) Occasionally, I smile proudly, knowing I achieved one of my life goals of getting an offer of admission to the University of Victoria.
2) I can’t accept it. I can’t go. I’m too chronically ill. I don’t have proper healthcare. I can’t fight against my body anymore. Insert complex grief.
Holding space for both accomplishment and defeat at once is a complex experience. I wanted to share and shine a line on this experience if you’re always walking along a similar path.

I’m so proud of my wife, @nprofile…nzcs!! :ablobcatheart:
For the past two years, she’s worked tirelessly every day on her (second!) Master’s Degree as part of a career change. At the end of May, she’ll be completing her year-long Capstone project.
When I became disabled and could no longer work at the same time the world was seeing record inflation — she stepped up for us. :ACNH_Love:
Not only is she brilliant and blowing away the faculty at U of A, she’s a loving partner and part time caregiver (to me). She never complains on my bad days, only smiles and asks, “how can I help?”
Love you babes!!! I can’t wait to watch you in your new role as a Psychotherpist next year!! ❤️

PSA: The way you talk about Covid and those with #LongCovid can be hurtful, even if you don’t intend to be. I’ve seen it a lot here lately and it hurts.
You contribute to stigma when you buy into popular assumptions that are parroted on social media:
“If they’d just worn a mask, it wouldn’t have happened to them. It’s their fault.” (assuming they didn’t.)
“If they’d just been healthy before they got sick, eaten right, and exercised, this wouldn’t have happened to them.” (assuming they didn’t.)
“If they’d just try harder to get better and stop focusing on what’s wrong, they’d be fine.”
Ableism can easily creep into our language and our thoughts. It is pervasive.
> I ask you to please be mindful of your language and self reflect.
> *Especially* if you believe you’ve never had Covid and carry that as some sort of badge of honour.
> *Especially* if something inside your mind tells you that it’ll never find you if you just do X,Y,Z.
It can find ANYONE.
It found me despite my best intentions and it’s entirely destroyed my life.
Every. Single. Day. is a fight for survival.
I got it once, and only once.
Be kind.
You never know what burdens others are carrying.

@nprofile…muev I hope Athabasca U will stop using them too… when I had to write remote exams, ProctorU was horrid.
I had accessibility accommodations (ex: screen reader, speech to text) for my exams, and their proctors would verbally interrupt me during exams when I was using the tools… even though the same proctor had just agreed in writing in the chat that I was allowed to use them.
The interruptions felt invasive and discriminatory. TLDR: They’re terrible.

TW: Long personal health update, discussion about autoimmune disease:
My family doctor is ordering new blood tests to look at the possibility that I’m dealing with more than one autoimmune disease. Over 2 years, my treatment has not been successful, and my immune system is rapidly weakening. I’m even more susceptible to infection and flare ups. All of this had slowly worsened since my onset of Long Covid (2023) and its sequelae of cascading health issues.
*long audible sigh*
I expected this day might come. I may seem strong and capable via the internet, but the majority of my days are spent feeling defeated, forced to rest and never doing what I truly want to do. I already dropped out of school. I already have recruited my wife to help with my business. 🤷🏻
I’m nervous but also hopeful we might find something else that, if treated, could help improve my quality of life.
Please cross your fingers for me, as right now I do not have a Rheumatologist and I’m on a long wait list for a new one.

Seeing the USPS increase rates due to a war their country created is infuriating for me, a small Canadian business owner, making extremely slim margins trying to ship items to customers down south.
I had to increase shipping rates to compensate, as I’m unable to absorb the extra 8-10% in shipping costs on top of the stupid tariffs/brokerage fees.
/sigh

My Etsy shop record of 162/162 5 star reviews has come to an end.
Some jerk just posted a 3/5 review, for absolutely zero reason, without even contacting me.

Over the last week, I’ve been working on prototypes and colour combo ideas for these new gothic style ‘clicker’ keychains.
They’re made with translucent filaments to mimic a stained glass look. I absolutely adore them! :blobsmilehappyeyes:
The first photo shows two smaller clicker keychains and the second photo shows four larger lanterns that are great as bag charms or decor.
