As of August 19th, the U.S. will be adding a 50% tariffs to all of the goods I sell and export from Canada. This is catastrophic and insane, but I expect nothing less from that administration.
So far, I’ve been able to manage a 10% tariff - but 50%? Yeah, that’ll shut my business over the border down.

I haven’t shared, but I’m currently fighting off an infection.
Every one that I’ve had since my RA diagnosis feels like it takes more out of me than the last.
I can’t do much right now, especially with my hand also being out of commission.
:( I hate feeling useless and waiting for antibiotics to work.

People who journal regularly - please, explain to me why you do it.
I mean this with kindness and inquisitiveness- as someone who has always found it painful and uncomfortable to physically write, and is scared of putting something on paper permanently, I’m fascinated by folks who journal.
Context: I have carpal tunnel now, but I’m also dysgraphic, have adhd, and as an autistic I prefer to keep everything in my noggin’ for quick access … we call it my Rolodex, lol
Writing anything down feels, unnatural? to me at least.

Etsy just keeps hitting me so hard, no matter how perfect a seller I am on their platform.
I'm pretty sure they're about to ban ALL of my magnetic products due to ‘child safety laws' in the U.S. This is about 50-70% of my income.
I... I just can't even. I never market them to children; they are not listed in children’s sections and are clearly marked as not intended for children.
I got an ominous email today from support, but there was no content in it yet; I assume it's only a matter of time.

I get a lot of requests for links to audio showing what my clickers and magnetic fidgets sound like.
I’d like to accommodate links to videos with sound, but I’m unsure of the best place to have private videos hosted - you can only see them if you have the link - which I’d add into all of my listing descriptions or share in messages.
Etsy silences every video on their platform to prevent bad actors but this really has a negative effect on a shop like mine.
Any creative ideas are welcome! Thanks!

As a youngin’, I declined a full scholarship to study at the top tier prestigious Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). I can’t believe I walked away from a 10k/year scholarship back in the 2000’s. I regret it deeply. I’ve been a lost artist ever since… just sort of floating and flirting with my creativity — never fully embracing it the way I know I’m capable. Sometimes, for years and years at a time, I fully ignored it.
I turn 40 next year… and I keep thinking… “Is it too late to rediscover my creativity? Is to too late to try to be who I wanted to be when I was a kid? Where do I start? How do I learn… properly? Is this hopeless in the face of AI? Did I wait too long?”
I’m still looking for that courage…

CW Medical gaslighting post with mention of needles and MRI.
I just saw a specialist for lower back pain that radiates into my leg with sensory changes. He did an EMG.
His solution? He says he knows where it is (L4) and said an MRI would come back abnormal but that doesn’t matter?? He told me it’s not worth an MRI because he knows where it is and “I need to know what I’m getting myself into with an MRI.” Further, that a 4” needle for a steroid shot is what they use for these things, so I need to beware if I choose this path. (I waited 6 months for this btw.)
Choose. This. Path?! I didn’t choose to have #EhlersDanlos and a ton of other painful medical conditions. I’m doing my best here to live a good life.
WHAT THE FUCK BRO.
I’m nearly to the point of no longer asking any of these doctors for help because it’s all all deny, dismiss, and diffuse — never diagnose and help.

Today marks 3 weeks of learning how to paint with watercolours. :chickArtist: I’m noticing I like layering paint and inking over my work.
It’s a forgiving medium for someone with rheumatoid arthritis + bilateral carpal tunnel. My neck though? Yeah, it’s not too happy about this new hobby. 😆
But yeah - It’s been great for my mental health. Yay!
This painting is inspired by the Alberta Badlands. There are sweeping landscapes down there full of the world's best preserved dinosaur fossils. The landscape features gorgeous wind exposed erosion on the hills with layers of sediment ranging from yellows golds, to browns and reds.
I tried to reproduce those striations in this painting. :blobbear_heart:

After days of screaming into the Etsy void, I may have found a workaround for shipping stickers through the fidget shop! Giving customers OPTIONS for letter mail (untracked), partial tracking (origination scan), or full parcel tracking (my usual). This would only apply to orders with stickers ONLY - other orders with fidgets would default to the parcel rates.
This could work. I hope. Maybe.
Now we just need to improve our sticker design flow process. haha.
Any suggestions?! I'll get workin'!

@nprofile…sl5s as long as we're in the age of rising anti-globalization (not saying it's always a good thing) and increasing nationalism, I doubt we’ll see it change.
This change is directly targeted at e-commerce sellers. It's pretty gross because sites like Temu and Ali Baba will likely find creative (or illegal) ways around it.

Shout out to the EU for killing my small business's ability to ship to the EU...
As of July 1st, the EU is implementing a new customs duty fee PER LINE ITEM on every shipment. This amounts to roughly $5 CAD extra per line item. This is in addition to VAT.
No one is going to pay $15 for a fidget or two, and then pay shipping plus these insane fees.
This effectively kills my ability to get any fidgets out of North America. thanks. awesome. appreciate it SO MUCH. /s

@nprofile…5gq2 I did think about this! But Etsy itself limits sellers to only two customizations (that can add $, ex: $3 for X sticker add on). Most of my customizations are for the item itself.
Great thought though!
Maybe I’ll just sell sticker packs? Of like 3-5? So it’s about the same price as a fidget? Who knows.

So, I had this grand creative idea of making my own stickers with my wife … at first, I just wanted to make fun free stickers for the orders that come in through the fidget shop — but then I realized, I could likely offer them for sale, too!
Only to realize my shop’s structure and the shipping situation to the U.S. would make it nearly impossible and cost prohibitive to ship my stickers… so now I’m sad.
Long story short: my shop is set up to ship parcels with tracking, not letter mail without tracking. I cannot combine the two.

@nprofile…xdda hey! I wouldn’t say it’s generational, as I have folks of all ages enjoy these. It’s a fidget toy that clicks when you press it, just a type of fidget really. They’re quite popular as desk decorations, keychains, and general decoration. :)
The inside of fidget clickers have a mechanical keyboard switch installed that ‘clicks’ when you press down on it, providing fun tactile feedback.

Interesting.
Over the last month, since I started posting Pride and rainbow listings on my Etsy shop, my view are down over 65% and my order volume is down 40%.
I know correlation is not causation - BUT - tracking back to early January, my shop has been extremely steady and predictable.
I’m frustrated. It makes me so angry. I meet and exceed every single metric they ask of sellers. I’ve been a star seller every month since I was able to qualify (October), and customers love my products. This just feels cruel.

Although I haven’t actively played Destiny in a long time, I’m so sad that the game is not moving forward.
I met my wife @nprofile…nzcs at the launch of Destiny 1 in 2014. Some of my best friends were found through that gaming community. I have countless, incredible memories that will forever be tied to that universe.

A friend of mine bought me some watercolour supplies (I’ve never touched a paintbrush in my life), and virtually taught a group of us how to paint a loose desert scene last night with some added line work (it’s their signature style).

I might just go with Shopify and bite the bullet until I can figure something else out. I just need it to *work* and not be cumbersome. That’s why Etsy has worked for me - it’s in my wheelhouse and allows me to focus on my product and customers instead of my website and traffic all the time.

Etsy is at it again, deleting my listings for random, vague reasons (thanks, AI), with zero ability to appeal.
This hurts. A lot. This shop is my main source of income. I need your help transferring my shop from Etsy to a site I can fully control. I've been trying to set something up myself (Tried WordPress & Shopify), but over and over again, it ends up being too overwhelming, and I give up.
I live with multiple disabilities that mostly affect my ability to work for long periods of time and sustain deep focus/looking at screens. Any help, from anyone, would be immensely appreciated.

Hey, I’m reaching out to the #blind community here on Mastodon. I need your help in assisting a customer on my website who is blind.
They’ve reached out to me via messages on Etsy, asking how tactile my fidgets are. They want to know if my fidgets (2 in particular, I can link you) are detailed enough for a visually impaired person to enjoy. I feel unqualified to answer this question without consulting others with lived experience. Further, I’m dyslexic and autistic, and worry that I might describe something inaccurately.
They’ve requested I send them a highly detailed written description of what features can be tactically felt on the fidgets they want. I really want to help, but I’m unsure the best way to do this. Your help would be immensely appreciated.

@nprofile…hfm9 what really stuck out for me more than anything was you saying it was your first time posting about any of it. That’s such a huge step and takes a lot of courage. When we share what we’re going through, it can really help others who are feeling isolated or need some support. :) really warmed my heart to see so many folks I am familiar with on the Fedi in the comments. Yesterday, during the windy rolling thunderstorm, @nprofile…nzcs and I walked out onto the balcony and just watched the wind blow sheets of rain off the roof of houses across the street. We took deep, full breaths of the smell of the first spring rainstorm of the year for Edmonton.
We also talked about how much we miss the west coast. How we feel so … there isn’t really a word for it … deprived of the joy that regular rainfall brings. So, we soaked it in. I reached out with my arms into the storm and let the rainfall bounce off my forearms. It was healing. ❤️‍🩹
The seasons here are so intense. I’m glad we took some quiet moments to take it in. Hopefully, more rain is coming soon. 🌧️

CW: discussion of IV infusions/iron deficiency
Have any of you ever had IV iron infusions? I’ve had in and off iron deficiency anemia all of my adult life, but after my autoimmune diagnosis, it started plummeting even with supplementation.
It’s been well over a year that I’ve been fighting with all my doctors to get me an iron infusion covered by Alberta Health and my GI specialist is finally helping me do it!!!
I’ve been prescribed Monoferric iron — a one time infusion, instead of the traditional infusion that requires multiple long visits. This helps accommodate my energy limitations and neurodivergence. Sitting for a 2-3 hour IV infusion takes *a lot* out of me so a one time 30 minute infusion is compassionate care.
Have you had a Monoferric iron infusion? Pls tell me about it!

… where did I put my bowl? Walks spend entire house. SEES IT. Oh, oh wow ok, I left it on top of the couch?! lol Great. Weird but like fine? Takes bowl to kitchen only to place it on the oven and not into the dishwasher. Realizes this an hour later.
*goes into washroom to put on deodorant*
… ends up washing my hair in the sink and styling it and wondering why I came into the room to begin with. A while later I remember and rush back to do that singular task. While in there, I begin organizing my pill bottles for no reason…
