Yesterday I saw someone boast that as a designer he can just feed his figma file to an AI and “instantly get a working product”. “It’s not vibecoding”, he wrote on LinkedIn, “I am guiding the software”.
This saves him so much time he now has time left for freelance work! …
What is it with these people who think their expertise is the one thing AI can’t do, while shouting from the rooftops it can do everything and replace everyone else? 🤪 is this how some people mentally deal with this stuff?

on thursday the teacher teaching my sowing course explained how fast fashion cuts fabrics in a way that is a little thriftier but makes the end result harder to wear. Like materials that don’t stretch except in a diagonal that cause ‘twisty jean pipes’. So the answer might as well be that more expensive jeans don’t have that problem and be different in that regard from the cheaper ones.

Worked on a little project for @npub1jte…yd89 this week, which helped me ease in to my ‘working holiday’. I want to be more of a self starter and get back more into a learning and organising mindset. I used to be full of initiative, creating a string of online communities, and I want that back :) off to a good start I think! What shall I get up to next week?

well as I said, if you believe in it, go and offer to help them with it! I would try and find a person in a responsible looking role through linkedin of one of the media outlets you like. All you need is an advocate on the inside who you can convince. At least that’s my experience and now that I’m thinking about this I might help my old paper get on Mastodon

I get it and I have actually myself set up RSS feeds for the Tubantia that ran for more than a decade after I worked there :) but there is noone at the papers doing some modernization direction or thinking about what digital tools to use or how to do it responsibly. Just want to help understand the background here. If it’s something you want and think would be good, a paper would probably be delighted to get help with this stuff, even if they’re part of DPG here

um, I actually blame the non-considered inclusion of RSS feeds in newspaper website systems in the 90s for the fact people expect their news for free. Newspapers don’t want to reach an audience; journalists do. Newspapers want to keep paying journalists and thus have copyright/control/make money. And they don’t make any off you not going to their website.
(As an idealist I feel similar to you but I also know journalism takes a lot of time and can’t be done as a hobby)

My highschool bff told me about a high school reunion taking place next week. Since signing up for it I have been nervous for it 🫣 especially because the reunion of my childhood girl scouts troop absolutely sucked for me - no-one seemed to remember me and it was super awkward. So now I’m afraid attending this next event will just reduce me to 15 year old shy Anneke. Ten days to see what happens 🫠

This sucks as I *want* to spend time and effort to take the train over airtravel. But by plane we arrived at 16:00 and if the trains would have helped us get there at all we would have arrived in Copenhagen at 22:00 (original arrival would have been t 18:00). Ugh. Deutsche Bahn I was rooting for you!

So last weekend we visited Copenhagen. We had bought tickets through NS Interntional to take the train (Enschede-Munster-Hamburg-Copenhagen) but
- the train to Munster got cancelled due to a staff shortage with DB (NS international had no idea)
- a detour through Hengelo/Bielefeld got cancelled (again NS International, no idea)
- the rescheduled connection was impossible with a 45 minute delay announced two hours before
So we took a train through NL (also with a delay) and booked plane tickets

The teacher I sent it to made a big scene during a class I was in when some dude who hadn’t gotten the memo called something ‘gay’. On my behalf but it was awkward!
Another friend ‘came out’ to me in a letter with ‘my family goes to nudist campings every holiday’. That was more of a comfort to me than anything else people said tbh. 🥲
Happy and lucky to be married to the most awesome woman nowadays and wishing this peace to everyone struggling with the surprises life throws at them.

Hey! It just occurs to me that this year it’s 25 years since I came out! 🏳️‍🌈 I was 17, I’d had a rough time and had to have a do-over schoolyear, and I was feeling spicy. So I wrote the most dramatic coming out letter, copied it 25+ times and sent it to all my school friends (and one teacher as backup). “Now it’s your problem, not mine”. I sent it at the start of a holiday week and had forgotten about it a week later. By then my schoolmates either pretended they never got it 🤷‍♀️or were cool ❤️ 1/2

best is to (learn to) cook induction with stainless steel pans and metal utensils I think. Using glass containers for keeping things. It is hard :(

Took part in my first pride walk today in our lovely city of Enschede. Have to say it started with me feeling really awkward but it turned out to be a really nice experience 🏳️‍🌈
Also I heard a little international bookstore/cafe I invested in here in the city is doing a lot of cool things and organises some queer/antiracism events. Just what this city needs!
