@nprofile…kt0j my issue is, even if you feel that way… what’s the plan? This is the stance that failed with social media, failed with ride sharing apps, failed with crypto. Even if critics were morally right to say “nobody should ever use this”, they didn’t succeed in harm reduction. And that has to matter more than smugly being “right” when the stakes are this high.

There are (sort of) two kinds of coders: those who see it as just a well-paying, stable job, and those who do it on nights and weekends because they love it, and it’s part of their identity. One of the things that's most frustrating about the hype cycle around OpenClaw is that so much of what people are excited about is just... software? You can automate doing lots of cool stuff with your inbox with deterministic software that's been around for decades, and it won't delete your inbox! And much of it is easier to install than OpenClaw is!

Which social groups people are in, and what their expectations are about behaviors; this is largely just a function of age and context. He's in a social group where that is expected behavior that doesn't carry stigma, and has very likely never encountered anyone saying why it should or might.

So I seldom quote-post people, but one of the times you have to do it is when people knowingly do shit like *conflating me and Curtis Yarvin*, when Yarvin has publicly targeted me, did so more than a dozen years ago, incited his white supremacist followers to come after me including showing up at my workplace, they _still_ harass me as part of the campaign that never ended, and this person has never been targeted by Yarvin and his ilk. And I seldom do this, but I’ve seen the dame person go after much smaller accounts, and I do think there’s value in showing someone that there are social costs to negative behaviors. @nprofile…288f I think one common reason people feel that way is that WYSIWYG editors tend to be quite finicky or fiddly, and can break the formatting of the sites they're being used with. But if the editor you have works in the context you're using it, then that's great!

@nprofile…9d4g There were certainly other community sites that supported it before then, but I'm sure Reddit helped contribute to its spread. I think Stack Overflow's adoption was really key, because it taught lots of coders, who then went on to build it into other sites. Same with GitHub.

It was at The Way where many of the brilliant musicians who created Minneapolis' signature sound first met, and where they first learned their instruments. I've talked to more than one alum of the scene who said that it was The Wat and its community that kept them from getting hassled by the cops, and also where they met lifelong friends who would change the course of their lives.
