Also of note in context, my favourite Zelda game, Link's Awakening, got some inspiration from Twin Peaks. I had no idea when I first played it, as I'd barely even heard about Twin Peaks then, but when I read about it years later in an interview with Takashi Tezuka, I thought yeah, I can see that now. Weird ass characters in a small town, eery atmosphere all around... that checks out. These are some of the things I like about it too so I'm grateful for that.

Started working on the new "I swear this time it's smaller" project, so of course as soon as I hit the more complex (to me) stuff, I started working on one of the characters. He wanted to make a good first impression so he thought he'd wear his best suit (he doesn't actually own one).

Smol progress update, rendered via Cycles. Just a frame though, would take too long to render a whole animation and that's not what I need anyway. Just a few tweaks but at least I got something done today (kudos if you can read the sign in the background).

If I wanted to be "accurate" I'd render at something like 640x480, but I don't want it to be 4/3 and tbh 480 feels really low. I didn't like how the test renders looked, plus it'll be zoomed in a bit during actual gameplay. That said it'll go through a low-res render texture in Unity anyway, so. We'll see.

Been working on a different aspect of the project for a while and went back to pre-rendered backgrounds. I'd tried to get them to work in #Unity for a previous project, which went ok, but the scenes I'd made back then were very simple, just to see if I could do it. So I wanted to try and make something just a bit more elaborate for this, but I'd forgotten how much work that was. Not sure yet what resolution to render at when it's done. Here's a wip from #Blender

Aww thank you so much!! It's a terrain plane and yes, I'm using a vertex displacement shader to bend it along 2 axes. It's still all temporary assets, but that's the general vibe at least, I like it too so that means a lot 👏😌

Improved the airship a bit! Instead of temporary basic shapes, now it's a temporary slightly less basic mesh with animations.

I've been working on another thingy these past few days, but the bike's movement and animations are a bit more smooth now. Also, I've finally managed to sorta fix the colours on the character (vertex colours tend to appear washed out in URP).

Was working on making animation transitions more smooth and suddenly realised spinning the wheel like that on a monobike probably wasn't even physically possible 😅 (not that such a bike actually exists, but still) Oh well, I thought it'd be fun anyway 😌

I made a new character and a bike! Took me ages to model, rig and animate tbh, but I'm pretty happy with the result. For now. Gotta fix colours and lighting at some point I think.

Been keeping myself busy doing other stuff on the project since finding a good workflow for these dang forests was a bit of a pain, but I've reached a point where I'm more efficient. Simple as they are I thought this would be, well, simpler. There's probably a better way to do this, but the way I'm making them in Blender and then importing to Unity, I have to keep them simple & small, no concave bits in the base outline. But it works out!

I've been delaying modelling large forests because I couldn't figure out a good workflow. It's getting there, but scale/proportions still need work 😅 Smol forest included for reference, ideally it should be a little lower than that, with the tree trunks part at the same height (vertex displacement seems ok, as long as the object isn't too large and it's got enough vertices).

I'm still tweaking the terrain shader until I get something closer to what I need, but in the meantime I started making simple placeholder assets to use on the world map, to indicate towns and other areas. They also have to use vertex displacement, or else they'd be hovering above the terrain and getting higher as the Player moves away. Like the elderly dude's house from Up. Sounds fun, bit impractical.

I knew the 2 were in conflict, I knew why, but I didn't know how to fix it, so I got REALLY good at delaying and finding other things to work on instead 🤡 After a while, I kept tweaking and trying and I couldn't understand why simply setting a position node to pre-displacement wouldn't work. In the end, I found a solution that did work for me and life was (almost) good again.

So! When I started the project, I quickly made the shader I needed for the terrain, to see if I could do it. I needed it to mainly do 2 things: vertex displacement (to make the world appear curved) and triplanar mapping (to avoid having to paint textures). Both things worked well enough, but not together. Because of the displacement, the mapping was getting the wrong vertex positions (duh) which resulted in textures sliding up and down.

Welp. Fading the cloud plane near the edges didn't turn out great and tiling noise was a pain, so pre-made seamless noise texture it is (for now). Not perfect, but does the job!
(Also, new temp airship since apparently the previous one looked like 🍆)

I wanted to try some "PS1-style" animated textures, but I couldn't make it look good. Went with some Voronoi noise instead. Voronoi. Voronoise o_o Still temporary I guess, but good enough for now.
Also, I added a cloud layer, again using a noise texture. Simple, but that's what I wanted for this. Now I just have to make it work with the wrap-around effect. Not sure how to tile it seamlessly so I'll probably make it fade close to the edges.
