Back inside as it seemed to be slowing down and my feet were freezing (summer in Hobart). We don't have have a clear view to south so it has to be a good one for us to see it well, and it was. Lots of green and purple, and bands right across the sky visible with the naked eye (though not in colour). #aurora

On this #WorldDigitalPreservationDay I'm reflecting on the fact that my attempts to preserve data documenting the development of online collections was thwarted this year by GLAM institutions who are today posting about #WDPD2025. Oh the irony...

It all stopped in January when changes at NLA and NAA made it impossible for me to continue harvesting data. The gatekeepers are fully in charge at the NLA and access is being shut down, step by step. I'm very glad not to be working on Trove any more. It's worth noting that university libraries are Trove 'partners' and are represented on Trove's Strategic Advisory Committee, so if you're worried about the impact on your own research let your university librarian know!

This what the email said: "Trove API Terms of Use specify that developers may access metadata only and do not provide extended rights. We consider the use of an API to extract and save full text as being in violation of the Terms of Use."
Which given that the API provides full text from newspapers, journals, books etc means that using the API is a breach of the API terms of use...
In any case, I didn't use the API to get text from the NED periodicals, I downloaded the PDFs.

Nice. So the NLA has cancelled all my #Trove API keys because of the work I did recently trying to help researchers & communities more easily use the rich collections of periodicals uploaded through the National eDeposit service (described here: https://updates.timsherratt.org/2025/02/19/search-the-content-of-periodicals.html).
What does this mean for my various Trove tools & resources?
GLAM Workbench notebooks use your own API keys, not mine, so they won't be affected. However, I won't be able to maintain and test existing notebooks, or develop new resources.
Similarly, my ability to develop and maintain the Trove Data Guide will be very limited.
The Trove Newspaper Data Dashboard which provides weekly updates on the newspaper corpus won't be updated, and none of the automated data harvests I've been developing to preserve information about the development of Trove will run.

- The Sun News-Pictorial (Vic), 2,089,635 articles added
- Daily Mirror (NSW), 1,533,759 articles added
- Maitland Mercury (NSW), 658,331 articles added

While the number of articles with corrections, tags, and comments all increased steadily across 2024, there seems to have been a bit of glitch indexing tags and comments causing some jumps in the totals.

Just following on from my little rant yesterday about the AHA president's keynote disappearing behind a paywall at the end of the year, I updated my notebook that analyses #openAccess status in Australian history journals (now using the awesome @npub10qx…kwm3 API). In total, more than 90% of articles in History Australia and Australian Historical Studies are locked up. The "read and publish" agreements have had an impact over the last couple of years, but the majority of articles are still closed. #histodons #openAccess

So the president's keynote at the Australian Historical Society conference in July, which discusses the role of history in Australian society, and ends with the words 'Let’s fight not in the dark, but in the daylight', is now available from the journal History Australia for free -- UNTIL THE END OF DECEMBER. For fuck's sake, perhaps part of the reason the public doesn't get engaged in history is that so much Australian history is locked up behind paywalls.

Yay, I've finally finished processing all the available volumes of the Tasmanian Post Office Directories! You can now search across **54** volumes from 1890 to 1948. The recently-added volumes are:
- 1920
- 1933-34
- 1941-42
- 1942-43
- 1943-44
- 1945-46
While these volumes could be downloaded as PDFs from Libraries Tasmania, they weren't previously searchable, as they don't contain any OCRd text. I've extracted images from the PDFs, pre-processed the images, run them through Tesseract to extract the text, and used Datasette to make them searchable. Now all we need is for #librariesTasmania to add a link from their Directories page...

Ok, the 1944-45 volume has now been added to my database of Tasmanian Post Office Directories: https://glam-workbench.net/libraries-tasmania/tasmanian-post-office-directories/ 53 volumes done, only one to go!
I also realised that I hadn't enabled advanced text searches on the volumes I've processed recently (booleans, wildcards etc), that should be fixed now.
Also worth remembering that the scans of the volumes I've added recently aren't great quality -- tight bindings, uneven lighting, skewed pages -- so in many cases names in the first column of right-hand pages won't be OCRd correctly. There's not a lot I can do about it unless #LibrariesTasmania rescans them.

Whoops, forgot to run the cropped images through pre-processing. It makes a noticeable difference to the OCR quality, so I've just re-run the processing pipeline and pushed an updated version of 1933-34 live.

Big historic Hansard news! Thanks to information from the Dept of Parliamentary Services I've finally been able to access XML files for Australian Commonwealth Hansard between 1981 and 1997. This means I've been able to run a complete harvest of *all* the XML files from 1901 to 2005 for the very first time. I've just pushed all the XML files to the Hansard-XML repository. Visualisation is a great way to find problems in your data. I was processing records from the Tasmanian Post Office Directories the other day when I realised that 1920 was missing from my online, searchable database. Eeek!

If you're wondering about getting those odd-looking skin spots checked – do it! I had a little sore on my nose that wouldn't heal, and another flaky patch of skin on my cheek – both came back as squamous cell carcinomas. Neither has spread so treatment should be straightforward, but I'm very glad I got them looked at!

Turns out my searchable version of the Tasmanian Post Office Directories is missing 1920 because the 1920 volume was digitised differently to everything else and didn't get picked up my my processing scripts. Spending the day manually cropping 700+ pages to make it consistent with the other volumes...

It took a week, but the #Trove newspapers section of the #GLAMWorkbench is now fully updated. That's 25 notebooks and 6 datasets. https://glam-workbench.net/trove-newspapers/
For those who are interested (probably nobody), as well as updating the code to work with v3 of the Trove API, I pulled all the datasets out of the code repo and put them in their own dedicated repositories, added metadata to the notebooks, and created an RO-Crate metadata file for the repo. I also made some changes to the documentation site, adjusting the notebook previews, and moving things around. I still need to adjust some things relating to the datasets, but it's not major. #GLAM #maintenance #histodons, #digitalHumanities

All the various bits you need for this are in the #TroveDataGuide, but I hadn't actually pulled them together as a notebook.
