6 years ago, March 23 2020, New Zealand went into lockdown to prevent transmission of Covid-19.
We had little information on what would come, but we stood together and made a sacrifice to protect each other. We had solidarity and empathy to guide us.
Today we face another crisis, perhaps an even more impactful one. But the message from our "leaders" is the opposite:
We can't possibly help each other, no way anyone can be expected to sacrifice anything for the common good. To each their own and too bad if anyone falls behind.
Money first. Me first.
Not only did we not learn the lesson, we've swung the opposite way.
Hard times are ahead, may we find our solidarity again.

Imagine if our ministers of transport, energy and climate change had taken serious steps towards electrification, regional rail and multi modal transport (yes bikes and cycle lanes) instead of playing foolish culture war games.
If the energy sector was actually moving at pace with electrification and renewable energy production.
If instead of the pointless shitfight about seabed mining we were already building offshore wind capacity.
If the dairy industry's reliance on imported fertiliser was mitigated somewhat ...

And of course you'll get journalists painting this as "both sides", and "two groups of protesters".
But one group had banners said "this is not China, this is not India, this is NZ". Same people who have stormed libraries to stop kids' events and pride parades where they were never invited.
The other had banners saying "you're welcome here", and "uniting our communities".
These are not at all the same thing and the media pretending they are by preserving "neutrality", "objectivity" and simply presenting both sides, is precisely how we got fascists in charge elsewhere.
When one side preaches hate and the other love, when one side has a history of violence and actual convictions for it, while the other clearly doesn't... pretending you can stand in the middle is beyond cowardice.

All the headlines are currently mudslide, flooding, missing people, rescue operations.
And next to those:
Politicians on the (figurative) horse race, who leads the latest poll, the election date being announced, etc.
It is like they live in a separate country. One where there are no emergencies and people aren't suffering, looking for their loved ones, wondering if they are even alive.
I find it quite jarring.

For the first time ever today we got a mildly aggressive dude on the train saying "Take the mask off the kid, they can't breathe!"
To which I responded, "Not your problem, dude."
"Yes it's my problem, I'm in the military" and he pointed to his camouflaged hat (whut?)
"Still not your problem."
And he walked away mumbling.
The three of us (partner, kiddo, and me) ALWAYS mask on the train. And pretty much anywhere we go. Other people today told the Little One "I like your mask", which is a more common event. 😷
Never before in NZ had anyone bothered to tell us l, and this guy went away quickly.
Only remarkable for being the first in nearly 6 years now to have a problem with our masking.

Watched the Prime Minister documentary film about Jacinda Ardern last night. 🎥
It is excellent.
I have lots of criticism towards the labour party in general and Ardern's government in particular, but she is a decent, genuine human being and an excellent leader that brought the best out of people in hard times, of which she faced a real handful.
The film feels authentic and intimate, with it being partly shot by her partner and giving us a glimpse into her perspective of pivotal moments of Aotearoa's recent history.
It also makes it really evident how much of a downgrade the current CoC government is, and how much of her work has already been eroded by these greedy profiteers. And just how poisoned the discourse against her became and how manipulated the cookers still are.
I hope one day soon the pendulum swings back out of the rabbit hole and kindness and integrity come back into fashion for politicians.
Definitely check it out.

"A spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade told Stuff they were aware of an Israeli navy operation involving the flotilla.
In a statement, they said the New Zealand Embassy in Ankara, Türkiye, had been in “proactive contact” with Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the provision of consular services to New Zealanders onboard the flotilla, and their expectations in that regard, should that be requested by any of the participants.
Samuel Leason posted a final message to social media before the Israeli navy intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla.
“The safety of New Zealanders is paramount. We expect any New Zealanders in the flotilla to be treated in a manner consistent with international law and have communicated this directly to Israel several times.”
MFAT added that consular advice had been shared with groups that were in touch with New Zealanders onboard the flotilla.
They said they have a long-standing ‘do not travel’ advisory in place for Gaza and continues to warn New Zealanders against any attempt to enter Gaza by sea in breach of Israeli navy restrictions, including participation in flotillas to deliver aid."

It's quite funny when Talley’s, or any of the fishing companies, act all concerned about the health and safety of the people involved in peaceful protest, and try to paint Greenpeace's actions as too reckless or risky.
Greenpeace has a 50 year track record of safely taking direct action in Aotearoa, and we're happy to compare it to that of any of the companies involved in industrial fishing any day.
We can then see who looks after people (never mind the planet) with actual data to back claims up.

Always remember that any disruption activists cause is (fortunately or not) always going to be temporary. But the damaged caused in the delicate ecosystems deep below the surface of the ocean is permanent, or very nearly so.

Was just reminded of Mars Attacks!, the 1996 Tim Burton film where brainy skull-like aliens visit earth and communicate only with a series of AT-AT sounds.
In the film, humans build a machine to translate their language and turns out they keep saying they want peace and friendship with humanity. But they keep murdering everyone and destroying earth, while saying they just want to be friends.
Or perhaps the machine is just useless at translating.
Regardless, humans get killed by the martians, expecting their message of friendship to come true at some point.
Unrelated, the #NZPol government keeps saying they are not racist or anti-māori, but they keep trying to reverse any progress in Te Reo, Te Tiriti and undo the many parts of Aotearoa's unique multicultural society.
