A woman has been convicted of not paying her TV Licence while she is being detained for mental health treatment, in the latest outrage to emerge from the Single Justice Procedure.
The 32-year-old woman said she was “not feeling well” when she was spoken to on the doorstep by a TV Licensing inspector in May, and revealed she has post-traumatic stress disorder and had been struggling to keep up with bill payments.
A decision was taken to prosecute her, for watching TV without a valid licence, and the woman then wrote in to the court to say she is now in hospital.
“I am currently detained under the mental health act on a section 3,” she explained in a letter seen by The Standard.
“I have been in hospital since June of this year and have been struggling with my mental health for a long period (of) time.
“I did not intentionally not pay my TV licence, but due to my mental state during the time of the offence I forgot to pay and I am sincerely sorry.”
The note, setting out her circumstances, was sent on September 20 along with a written guilty plea.

Get ready for a cosmic surprise this autumn - Earth is about to get a second moon, according to scientists.
A small asteroid is going to be captured by Earth’s gravitational pull and temporarily become a "mini-moon".
This space visitor will be around from September 29 for a couple of months before escaping from Earth's gravity again.
Sadly the second moon is going to be too small and dim to be seen, unless you have a professional telescope.
The asteroid was first spotted by NASA’s Asteroid Terrestrial-Impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) on 7 August.
Scientists worked out its trajectory in a study published, external in Research Notes of the American Astronomical Society.
The asteroid, which scientists refer to as 2024 PT5, hails from the Arjuna asteroid belt, which contains rocks that follow an orbit quite similar to Earth’s.

There is nothing new about corporations having undue influence in the affairs of nation states. The term "banana republic" derives from the fact that a US company, United Fruit, effectively ruled Guatemala for decades beginning in the 1930s. Apart from owning the majority of the land, they ran the railways, the postal service, the telegraph. When the Guatemalan government tried to push back, the CIA helped United Fruit out by instigating a coup.
But the network state movement appears to have greater ambitions still. It doesn’t just want pliant existing governments so that companies can run their own affairs. It wants to replace governments with companies.
There are those who view the network state idea as a neo-colonial project that would replace elected leaders with corporate dictators acting in the interests of their shareholders. But others think it's a way of cutting through what they see as the regulation-infested state of Western democracies today. Sounds like a tech bro fantasy? Elements of the network state already exist.
The conference in Amsterdam included tech entrepreneurs showcasing some of these “startup societies”. There was Cabin, a “network city of modern villages” that has branches in the US, Portugal and elsewhere; and Culdesac, an Arizona-based community designed for remote working.

How do sexual predators really view the world? Recently we’ve been given a clue. Day in, day out, it’s been the same horrible story: we hear some man has attacked/raped/abused people, sometimes for decades, but he’s finally been found out. In court, though, things change. It’s always someone else’s fault.
I don’t think I’ll ever get over the list of bizarre excuses Huw Edwards gave at his sentencing last week. What was he thinking? Found guilty of having 41 indecent images of children — some as young as seven — the TV presenter blamed his “monstrous” father and “puritanical” childhood. We learnt he told a psychiatrist he had a “a sense of being inferior” because of “not getting into Oxford and going to Cardiff instead”.
I’m sorry — Huw Edwards is a nonce because they denied him the Bridge of Sighs?

I have never seen a film watched these many times get COMPLETELY ignored by mainstream media. To me, certain things are v clear: ideologues don’t want to promote
1) film about females if it falls out of permissible remit (read: virtue signalling)
2) film made by female who isn’t white, with a name that’s prone to be butchered into various versions that makes everyone nervous lol (another post some other day to point out the various racist encounters across the board)
3) film made to call out the glaring issue that has the potential to shake the very foundation of this porn-sick woman-face wearing cult
Good thing though, I’d carry on my work either way. But one thing is true: those complicit in silencing women’s voices to support nappy wearing middle aged abusive white dudes, should hang their sorry selves in shame.

"My focus was always the patients, I really feel it's about the patients, and making them feel cared for and listened to.
“I did some time as a theatre nurse and I was really looking forward to that but it was probably the biggest disappointment as I didn’t have the patient contact because they were under anaesthetic.

The woman, who has her identity protected by court order, gave a moving statement in Sheffield Crown Court last week, over 20 years after she was groomed and abused from the age of 11. Before she delivered her victim impact statement, the prosecuting counsel and the judge conferred over sections that had been removed.
Barrister Matthew Bean, acting for the crown, said “Whether they [the abusers] remain in this country or not” is up to the Home Office, and that “the decision should happen” regardless of what “the victim should say one way or another.” The censored conclusion reads: “I’d like to request that after sentencing and upon Rudy and Showabe's release, that they should be deported back to Pakistan as this is where they originated from and came here to exploit children. Thank you.”
'Rudy' refers to Mohammed Amar, 42, convicted of two counts of indecent assault, he was sentenced to 14 years imprisonment, 2 years on extended licence. 'Showabe' refers to Mohammed Siyab, 49, convicted of two counts of rape, one count of sexual intercourse with a girl under 13 and one count of trafficking. He was sentenced to 25 years imprisonment, 12 months on licence. Siyab required an Urdu interpreter in court.........................................

A Nando's worker who was hit in the face with a plate by a male customer says she feels "grossly let down" by the Metropolitan Police after officers eating in the restaurant failed to challenge her attacker.
Student Zahra, who did not want to give her last name, told BBC London she was assaulted on 10 March after a man complained about a highchair at the Stratford branch of Nando's in east London. She can be seen being hit by a man in restaurant CCTV footage later shared on social media.
She said she went over to two Met officers who were in the restaurant, but they allowed the man to leave the scene. The force apologised and said the case had not been "progressed promptly by officers". Zahra claims she was initially verbally abused after telling a man he would need to move to a different table in order for his baby to use a high chair, due to the restaurant layout.
She explained that after a manager became involved, the man, who was also accompanied by a woman, agreed to move.
Zahra said she was hit the face with the plate when she later served food to their table, with the attack being caught on restaurant CCTV. "I was shocked. I couldn't register what happened, I couldn't process what had happened," Zahra said.
"I remembered that there were two [police] officers already in the restaurant waiting for their food. I thought that I would be safe and that the police officers would deal with him, but that wasn't the case." Zahra said she alerted one of the officers - a female - who "didn't seem bothered" about the attack, and told her to speak to her male colleague.
