Thanks so much again for all the engagement yesterday!! I really appreciated those of you who re-shared my “4 weeks on Nostr” celebration post from a few weeks back. Just a handful of reposts from folks like @nprofile…xm4n, @nprofile…pyzd, @nprofile…tun4, and a few others got the word out in such a big way… I think I gained around 50 followers yesterday, which is kind of wild. 🙏⚡️
For today’s video, I woke up thinking about Miles Davis. I’ve always loved his album Kind of Blue… that modal jazz feel… and especially the tune So What. I’ve even had my students transcribe Miles’s solo from that tune before.
So I thought, why not try something fun… here’s me “duetting” with Miles himself, improvising over and around his solo from So What.
How cool is it to trade phrases with Miles Davis? 😄🎺🎻

Checking in straight from the rehearsal space today. I’m about to play with a string orchestra! Here’s a little glimpse while I’m working on my part. It’s a fast, driving, galloping dance 🎶 (with a vocalist joining us later 😀)

It sort of depends, but in general I’m trying to capture something quickly and very much in the moment. So far I’ve noticed I’ll do between 1-5 “takes”. Sometimes it’s really one and done, so whatever happens happens! Sometimes I’ll do a few takes and I’ll catch an idea and try to develop it. Mostly I’m trying to get a take where I think it felt good to play, like “in the zone”, and that captured some kind of energy, mood, or expression. The ones with effects I usually have an “idea” of what I want to do ahead of time, but then improvise the takes in the same way. Then I’ll spend a little time afterwards editing whatever I have in the recordings. I would say that what I’m doing on Nostr is completely unique within my practise. All the composing I do professionally is always a long, drawn out, thought out process that takes months to compose a full piece. So I’m really enjoying the total spontaneity of capturing ideas and moods very quickly in recordings and posting them immediately. It’s almost like a daily musical journal entry! Good evening, Nostr 🌙
Coming at you a little late today again. It’s been a busy one! Errands in town, got that fresh haircut, a stop at the luthier violin shop to get the violin checked out and adjusted, and even a new rehair on my bow (yes, they actually still use real horsehair 🐎🎻).
Now I’m back to practicing ahead of a full festival week of music. Here’s a whirlwind improv… intense, driving, like I’m running, I’m going places, I’m urgent, and giving it everything I’ve got. ⚡️
It’s fun to start these high energy improvisations… I’m just making it up as I go so it’s a challenge to just stay on track without face planting! 😆
Been enjoying doing this on Nostr!! 💜

Yesterday’s improv game winner was @nprofile…udn8! Instead of words, I asked you all to drop your favorite tunes or melodies, and Paul suggested something amazing…. the guitar solo from Eric Clapton’s Journeyman. 🎸✨
He mentioned it already has a fiddle-like vibe, and I couldn’t agree more. The range, the phrasing, it sits right where the fiddle does, with a country-meets-rock intensity.
So here’s my take: first, a straight transcription of the opening 30-second solo, and then… a totally unwarranted violin solo over Clapton’s verse and chorus 😅 I couldn’t resist rocking out with Eric 🤘🤘🤘
Thanks Paul for the idea and for playing the game, this one was a blast. Hope you all enjoy it ⚡️⚡️⚡️and that you’ll play next week!

Hard to believe it’s been 4 weeks already! Along the way I’ve shared 28 daily tunes, improvisations, and even an orchestral release (link in bio!). I’m blown away by how supportive and engaged this community is. I’ve noticed many of you are consistently commenting, reposting, liking, and zapping my stuff⚡️

I’m back home, which means I’m reunited with my piano 🎹✨
This is one of my favourite ways to improvise and practise: play some piano, then add violin or viola. When I do this, I get to explore HARMONY in a way that feels almost like playing music with another person. Tones against tones, colours against colours, the endless possibilities for expression.
Harmony is one of my greatest joys in music… the infinite combinations of sounds that suggest infinite new musical possibilities 💜

🎻 Here is my improv to @nprofile…tfvs's word “Liars.”
It’s an improv turned mini-composition and video art piece! I did a little video and audio editing to capture the image I had in mind for “Liars” — something like: “Not all is as it seems, they whisper their lies in the dark.” Creative license! 🌙✨
And now… I’ve added something new to the Wednesday Improv Game. There were two other great words from @nprofile…9wlg and @nprofile…et35 , and it seemed a shame to let them go to waste.
So now, words that don’t win the improv game will be added to the “Encore List”.
The Encore List works two ways:
1. It’s a bank of inspiration I can draw from for any future video.
2. If you repost the Wednesday Improv Game video and comment “Encore!”, I’ll play something from the Encore List — either immediately or the very next day.
It’s both an archive of ideas and a game we can play together.
I hope that’s not too complicated! We’ll figure it out together.

I have felt this about corporate social media for years. It's gotten so tiring being on there... between the constant ads, low vibration content, and the continuous onslaught of stuff tuned to the algorithms. Nostr is a relief, both for posting and consuming content.

I know the feeling, performing is so nerve wracking, especially for a kid! I was so scared for my first concert when I was 6 years old. During one of my pieces I forgot the music 😦 and stopped playing… I then searched the audience for my parents and when I found them I jumped off the front of the stage and ran to them crying 😭 lol I honestly still get super nervous when I go on stage, but after years of doing it I finally know how to deal with the nerves 😬

Sixth note, I’m celebrating changing from the word “post” to “note”. See my previous notes for the erroneous “post” lingo 😅Anyway, as a musician I like the word note better (🎶) — I plan to share many more notes on Nostr, both musical and otherwise!
Here’s a short set of two Irish fiddle tunes for your listening pleasure! The lyrical Arran Boat Song followed by the off kilter slip jig Kid on the Mountain.
