this makes sense. They gotta induce demand and they're failing at it.
The other thing that stands out is that for a given workload, a computer that can do it has been getting cheaper. You could survive just fine doing web browsing and word processing on a computer that costs $25 brand new, or used for almost free.
We will, of course, hit a limit somewhere and we're all anxious about it. But when that happens, computers become durable goods, more like a car or fridge than something you have to compulsively upgrade all the time

I wonder how many teenagers have already killed themselves because of age verification related isolation? I suspect we'll never know for sure? but I have no doubt there's a body count. If I was a teen today I might have ended up among them. Think about all the LGBT teens in religious households or schools where they don't fit in. I think it's because we're small enough there aren't many places with their own distinctive identity that attracts people on it's own merits so instances feel kind of interchangeable and it's hard to tell if the mods suck except by parsing the tos.
If there were hundreds of instances that were big enough that people were attracted to one for the people on it and they pucked the community with federation giving you access to everyone else too this wouldn't be a problem. People will join the one their friends are on or their community moves to. Community building is a big part of the solution

people come and go, we don't seem to have quite the critical mass to keep people enganged 24/7 (for me at least we've got enough that I'm a regular user now) but the space is getting more heterogeneous since elon ruined twitter worse than it was already. I don't have long term hopes for bluesky or anything else too bespoke and insular, and software diversity for the fediverse is on the rise.
