So there's a Reuters photo going around of a young Black woman sitting on the DC Metro surrounded by masked white racists on their way to a march against immigrants and brown-skinned Americans. It's an award-worthy photo. But, I just point out that this young woman's safety is at risk, & I hope everyone who sees this photo understands this about where we are in our country right now. Also, she is not being "brave"; she is wearing the mask many Black women wear. I guarantee you she is scared.

I try not to despair. Better days are ahead. I just can't see them yet. In the meantime I just try to: be in nature; exercise/weight train; be creative (read, write, do word puzzles, cook); stay curious; understand history; be around folks who have positive energy most of the time; laugh a lot and have fun; stay alert to what the bad guys are doing (without it becoming too overwhelming); and appreciate life. Peace of mind is not easy to achieve in this world. Gotta keep going. #peace

Just finished watching a terrific documentary, The Harlem Hellfighters. It ends showing the renaming of Fort Polk, named after a Confederate, to Fort Johnson, after Harlem Hellfighter, Henry Johnson, who'd been awarded La Croix de Guerre by France for his WWI heroics. Of course, the racist Hegseth ordered it be changed back to Fort Polk, in honor of a white, WWII Silver Star recipient who happens to be named James H. Polk. I am so disgusted. All of these bogus name changes must be reversed.

We literally lucked out in seeing the elusive minke whales in the North Atlantic during a cruise to see just puffins. Our boat (the Bjössi Sör) captain told us that he rarely sees the slender cetacean. So, no, no, I could never partake! This is our wooden boat and views north towards the Arctic Circle.

I would NEVER eat either puffin or whale. Today I went on a food walking tour in Reyjavik & my Icelandic guide told me that the locals never eat this stuff and know it's only a gimmick for the tourists with deep pockets who don't know any better. 😅 (Price of meal in US dollars: about $80) Plus, I just saw a minke whale & nesting puffins in the wild a few days ago during a cruise off Husavik near the Arctic Circle. The village of Vik in southwestern Iceland is known for its black-crusted pizza. Filtered charcoal is infused into the sourdough crust. I had this topped with cheeses, langoustine, arugula and a balsamic glaze. Vik's famous lava black-sanded beach is just steps from the pizzeria. Arctic Macarons is also based in Vik. Founded by a Frenchman, it uses organic Icelandic flavorings.

When I was born, the Voting Rights Act didn’t exist yet & white & black Freedom Riders were being assassinated in the South. Little black girls were being killed in Alabama church bombings. Never could I have imagined than in only 60 years, the Supreme Court would make the hard-won Voting Rights Act no longer enforceable. That I’d see federal voting rights for blacks and abortion rights (won in 1973) for women rolled back after barely a generation. I am so disgusted by my country. #votingrights

Just reminiscing about the magic I felt the first time I watched a movie on a "compact disc" aka "DVD" on a laptop back in the late '90's. It was the movie "Contact" with Jodi Foster. I'd only known VHS tapes up to that point. I was looking forward to watching movies on my laptop on planes during business trips. And to think now we all stream content. I awoke this morning to see the azalea bushes blooming two weeks earlier than usual. Normally, they don’t start showing their flowers until the first week of May. Old friends mean so much me. So, watching friends drifting away into the morasses that are early-onset Alzheimer’s & Parkinson’s has been particularly painful. My friend of over 20 years has Alzheimer’s & no longer calls. She forgot to pay her phone bill. Her nephew put her on his cell phone plan & gave her a new mobile phone. But, she never answers it when I call. She no longer uses email. My friend with Parkinson’s doesn’t like to call, as his voice trembles. Their void & silence break me.

Apparently, changing the infant vaccine schedule isn't polling well (duh!) politically. So, there's now a crisis of confidence inside DHS & at the CDC, which is currently leaderless. It's amazing that political polling is driving the DHS, which is now pushing hard that people need to get vaccinated for measles. I guess it isn't a good "look" politically to have babies, toddlers & young kids getting really sick & even dying from a scourge we defeated years ago with proven vaccines.

I guess the illegal display of the Presidential Sal at his golf courses can't be legally challenged because no one can show they have standing for a lawsuit. The displays don't "harm" anyone; they just "help" him personally, which is the problem. I wish our country had better laws to keep wannabe dictators in check besides the impeachment clause and the emoluments clause, for instance.

It’s something I’m hoping for. There is bi-partisan legislation ready to go on this. The bill’s sponsors are still trying to line up votes for it. I’m calling my reps to push hard. We just have to get this one done.

Just finished all 300+ pages (in a marathon reading session) of Virginia Giuffre's Nobody's Girl memoir. It was so harrowing & enraging, I just want every man who participated directly or who knew better be exposed & face justice for the horrific harms inflicted on these young women & girls. The reason victims don't name certain men's names is that they & their families are being threatened & harassed. The FBI reports do name names. Those redacted reports must be released in full NOW. #Epstein

Our junky go to fried food: fried clam strips & curly fries (both from frozen) with spicy seafood sauce & fresh lemon. We try to add in a small, green side salad to make us feel a bit more virtuous!

We need more people to do foreign exchanges, at all ages. It’s one tiny way to break down barriers of race, class, language, religion and culture. Because then we find out we all basically want the same things.

Update. I finally received a letter with a Swiss postmark on it! From my friend of over 40 years. Bless her! I’d written on #mastodon a while back that I hadn’t heard from any of my long-time Swiss friends, including the family that hosted me when I was a teen 40+ years ago. I’m quite close to them & they haven’t missed a “Noël” in over 4 decades. They typically send me chocolate. So, it’s heartening to finally receive this one letter. (The world would be a better place if more of us connected.)

Some interesting "detritus" I just found out about yesterday. Mavis Staples of the Staples Singers confessed that her one & only true love was Bob Dylan. Dylan proposed to her in 1962 but she refused him, scared of being married to a white man back when it was still outlawed in many states. They both went on to marry others, but stayed in touch for years, even having an affair, which Staples broke off in 1969. She relates in hindsight that one of her biggest regrets was not having said "Yes".

If only the U.S. sent out baby boxes to all parents of newborns who request them the way the government in Finland does. Finland’s “baby boxes” program has existed since 1938.

One of the very first things the Democrats should do when they re-take control of Congress is install the plaque heralding the sacrifices made by Capitol police on Janurary 6th, 2021. There should be a huge, solemn installation service. Dignitaries from both parties should attend along with survivors and family members of survivors and victims of that bloody day. Right now the plaque is in storage and Speaker Johnson refuses to install it --even though Congress passed a law that it be installed.

Finally got to speak to my friend of over 20 years who has developed early Alzheimer's. It felt good. She'll always be one of my best friends, even if our conversations are no longer like those we used to have back when we were both single (she never married) professionals living in the NYC area who hiked, ate out, exolored Brooklyn and gallery-hopped. I worry about her. But, hearing her voice again after a couple of months' absence means everything to me. #Alzheimers #friendship
