I have few doubts that regardless of all the rest Iran is winning the global PR war. Just like Palestinians won the PR war as well, despite all the money and efforts to the contrary by Israel and the US. Lots of sympathy for them. I have signed the petition. One fact however I wish to point out hoping that this can help other developers: the two Samourai developers have been playing smart-asses with Govt, made announcements, sought visibility, which is exactly the opposite of what you should do. Even if they are right and did technically nothing illegal, you should be smart enough to understand that when you step out of the line on issues like "privacy-state money and power" and disrupt the "status-quo" of powers, regardless of whether you are within legal bounds or not, they will get you and make you pay one way or another. The point is, they acted stupid. Why do you think Satoshi disappeared knowing that other who tried to mess up the "money-state-power" paradigm have been jailed before? My advice is the same for any privacy tool developers, here on #nostr or in #bitcoin or #monero: keep under the radar, use pseudonyms, be uncompromisingly anonymous, do not show your face. And if you are not today think about disappearing officially for a while from the scene to get back later under a solid anonymous cover. In such "strategic areas" you never know if something which is legal today becomes illegal tomorrow and they will "retroactively" come and get you. Again, the law is flexible and who has the power will flex it as much as they want and when they want. Frank Lucas knew the rule nr. 1 was to keep a low profile. He broke that and was caught.

I have a very strong feeling that we (in the west mainly) are going towards a very dark period. I notice that people have developed an insensitivity to issues which would have caused a global outcry only 20-30 years ago and would have been stopped. I did not write it in my book, but I strongly believe that 9/11 was the inflection point for western civilization. Then 25 years of televised massacres have made people insensitive to such dramas. When something like Gaza happens and is watched live by hundreds of millions and nothing happens, people become indifferent, then the next step is we will see that happening sooner or later near our homes.

Your point is correct, if society descends into "barbarism" and the primal need is to survive one day to the other, as it is unfortunately now in Gaza under siege, people will have to revert to more primitive forms of exchange, storing value is clearly not important anymore, survival is.

It is not a failure of #bitcoin nor a technical failure per se. It is likely the combination of several complex factors: (i) all infrastructure is systematically destroyed by Israel bombings. Internet connections are very much disrupted and obviously targeted by Israel. (ii) on the other side Hamas has certainly available satellite internet connections which they use for their own military purposes and I doubt they are made available to the population at large (iii) certainly Israelis are also targeting known wallets belonging to Gazans and pressure exchanges to blacklist them which makes the conversion into stablecoins or cash into bank accounts outside Gaza also impossible (iv) what is left is Lightning or Monero if they are accepted and considering the limitations of internet connection availability, but generally even considering the very harsh conditions over there it should be possible to use effectively both Lightning and Monero as some have pointed out in this chat. It would be interesting to hear more about personal experiences of people who have tried to send both #bitcoin via Lightning or #Monero to help the people starving over there.

The libertarian dream of “separating government and money” has been thus far, at least in the modern era, a utopia for three main reasons. First, because no government with a large enough geopolitical-geostrategic footprint will ever relinquish its relative exorbitant privilege. This applies both to other nations and to their own citizens, since fiat money is by definition coercive on the citizens of a state as it is enforced as legal tender by the rule of law, backed up by the state’s monopoly on the use of military/police force. Until #Bitcoin arrived, the available choice was between a hard/sound money standard somehow based on gold and a purely fiat one. Austrian economists have been advocating the return to a sound/hard money standard, but they are stuck with an obsolete solution for the digital age. Gold is good money, and it will still retain its store of value properties in the foreseeable future, but its use as a currency stopped well over a century ago because of technological obsolescence. Gold could not move at the speed required by modern commerce. Just like its use as a currency was fostered by the technological innovation of coinage, then it became obsolete when the Industrial Revolution increased the speed of commerce and gold could not keep up with it.
Bankers have effectively arbitraged that need and replaced physical gold with banknotes first and non redeemable fiat currency later.

See, if you believed that inflation just happens, that CBDCs and digital IDs are for your own good and well‑being, that a bunch of mujahedeen who couldn’t fly a Cessna somehow managed to pilot an airliner at close to structural limit speed (460 to 600mph) into the Twin Towers on September 11, that the “bad, baddest” Russians unprovokedly invaded Ukraine, or that an experimental and untested vaccine is safe to inject into your body — just to mention a few events widely accepted as true by the majority of the population — then life would be far simpler.
But Bitcoin came into my life at one point and challenged my naivety. Life has not been the same since. For better or worse? It depends. As far as peace of mind is concerned, sometimes I wish I had stayed ignorant like before. Not seeing can make life easier.

Thanks good to know. One note about full disk encryption with Ubuntu which you mentioned in past posts. I have recently reinstalled my OS and I wanted to go for full encryption from the installation. But after trying it I went back to normal installation and I use of Veracrypt to encrypt relevant directories. The reason is that I found the login process into the encrypted disk totally user UN-friendly. At boot Ubuntu asks immediately for the encryption password in a small window without giving the option to see the typing nor if there are caps locks or other potential problems with the keyboard which can make difficult to type a more complicated password with capital letters and signs. Ubuntu shall add the option to view also the encryption password. But thanks anyway for the suggestions about Veracrypt and pico.

When intellectuals who have been notoriously against escalation start seeing no alternatives to a major war, then it is time to prepare for the worst:
• This war involves the world’s leading powers: the United States and its allies on one side, China and Russia on the other. It is global, not because of its scale, but because of the stakes: the future balance of power. The West sees the rise of China and the resurgence of Russia as existential threats.
• Compromise is no longer part of the game. What we’re seeing is not temporary crises but rolling conflicts.
• WWIII is not about occupation, but destabilization. The new strategy focuses on sowing internal disorder: economic sabotage, social unrest, and psychological attrition.
• Its tactics are all-encompassing. Drone strikes target infrastructure and nuclear facilities. Political assassinations are no longer off-limits. Journalists, negotiators, scientists, and even their families are being hunted. Residential neighborhoods, schools, and hospitals are not collateral damage — they are targets. This is total war.
• This is underpinned by dehumanization. Whether it is Russians, Iranians, Palestinians or Chinese, they are portrayed in the West not just as enemies but as subhuman. Western societies are manipulated to accept this. Information control, censorship, and historical revisionism are used to justify the war. Those who question the dominant narrative are labelled traitors.
• Russia now finds itself on the defensive. But those days will end. As our enemies coordinate their attacks, we must disrupt their unity. The European Union is not a monolith. Hungary, Slovakia, and much of southern Europe are not eager for escalation. These internal fractures must be widened.
• Any illusion that business as usual will return must be discarded.
We are in for a long war. It will not end like it did in 1945, nor settle into Cold War coexistence. The decades ahead will be turbulent. Russia must fight for its rightful place in a new world order.
• American foreign policy remains fundamentally adversarial.
And CAREFULLY CONSIDER these last three points:
• Fellow European powers like Britain, France, and Germany must be made to understand they are vulnerable. Their capitals are not immune. The same message should reach Finland, Poland, and the Baltics. Provocations must be met swiftly and decisively.
• If escalation is inevitable, we must consider pre-emptive action — firstly with conventional arms. And if necessary, we must be ready to use ‘special means,’ including nuclear weapons, with full awareness of the consequences. Deterrence must be both passive and active.
• Our mistake in Ukraine was waiting too long. Delay created the illusion of weakness. That must not be repeated.

Very interesting article by Dmitri Trenin, a Russian political analyst, about the crumbling of the world order established after World War II. The key point is about the danger of the increasingly weak nuclear deterrence perception in the West.

Critical thinkers are almost exhausted, but Wall Street’s smart money will come next, not for freedom but for profit. Ironically, that will pump bitcoin’s store-of-value role, pulling the masses behind them. And when the masses hold "paper" #bitcoin as a SOV long enough, some will learn self-custody and spend it too. Real medium-of-exchange use will follow — decades later maybe, but that’s how incentives work. That's all in my #bitcoindollar book. We should focus on (i) developing and adopting at protocol level bitcoin privacy features which is key to keep it uncensorable, decetralized and to restrain wall street (ii) hold your own keys (iii) run your own node. Incentives will do the rest.

Some key takes from @nprofile…2vts #whatbitcoindid podcast with impressive chartist Matthew Mezinskis:
1. The ratio of M0 to M3 is now almost 12x (3 trillion to 35 trillion). This excessive leverage is a sign of brewing troubles in the banking sector (hour 0:33)
2. The US Federal Reserve share of US debt (monetization) was 30% at the high of the Covid in 2022 and is now down to 16%, but also the share of foreign holders is down to only 23%. So who is going to buy US debt??? Currently the buyers are American investors/funds at about 60% (hour 0:41), and of course the growing strategic role of #stablecoin issuers.
The only way forward is for the Fed to monetize this debt or for the US to implement the #bitcoindollar system. Either way it will be good for #bitcoin.

ING Diba one of the largest EU banks has sent notes to clients advising that starting May 15 the new standard limit for online payments/wire transfers is 2.000Eur. The limit can be raised but it will take at least 4 hours before it is enabled. This aims to "protect the clients from scams and from large impulsive purchases". NO Kidding. Any bitcoin book on the money, finance, inflation side remains a topic for specialists. This is why I tried the geopolitical angle on my book. Still very hard to get traction. And he is 100% right in refusing to pay the "chief-thief" Musk for the bluecheck. I made the mistake of getting the bluecheck and giving the details of a credit card since Twitter does not accept any other means of payments nor PayPal. After 2 weeks they locked me out of my account with no way for me to get back in nor to terminate the subscription. And they stole another 2 months from my card. De-dollarization is a myth? There are plenty of dollars circulating, but not where the U.S. needs them. China, like a martial artist, uses the dollar against the U.S. By issuing billions in dollar-denominated bonds to its BRICS, SCO, and BRI partners, China drains global dollars and channels them into local infrastructure projects. Dollars in the Global South are safer with China, which won't arbitrarily seize funds. These dollars can be reinvested into productive infrastructure, benefiting local economies, rather than into speculative instruments like U.S. stocks, real estate, or debt. What an irony for the fading hegemon.

#bitcoin doing extremely well in this chaos. It starts to de-couple from risk assets and behaves again as a SOV. It will soon trade much higher. Trump's tariffs war is accelerating the escape from US Treasuries as the reserve asset of the world. There will be an inevitable global confluence on a neutral reserve asset.
