This is your regularly scheduled reminder that, even if you are only using the FOTM LLM to automate the 'boring' code, you're still using work stolen from people who did not consent.
The idea that there is somehow a line that you cross when you use 'AI' to make art instead of having it write SQL queries, commit messages, or internal tooling for you is an illusion, something you come up with to fool yourself into thinking that there is a 'moral' use of these tools.
There is not. This is technology built on extraction, exploitation of real people and tangible resources, and your use of it, no matter how 'small' you think it is, makes you complicit.

Speaking of reasons to not use Proton; there's an interview with Andy Yen, Proton's CEO, in our local NRC newspaper today, and there's a number of things in it that are worth highlighting;
1) Dude only does job interviews on Sundays, because that filters out the people who aren't really 'committed';
2) They want to grow to a billion users by 2030;
3) The unmasking of the Stop Cop City protester is not the first time Proton has assisted law enforcement, there are similar cases involving a French climate activist, and a Catalan independence activist;
4) They have complied with 94% of all requests for information since 2017, and got 9.301 requests last year, of which they rejected less than a thousand;
5) One of their latest products, Proton Meet, is built on top of US cloud services.

So, yeah, be wary of Proton, and the promises they make. They are Big Tech, they are tech bros, and they want to grow, grow, grow.

Once again encountered a situation in which the speaking out about a thing is considered more problematic than the thing, because it makes the person who did the thing uncomfortable.
So fucking tired of that, especially in supposedly safe spaces that are merely 'safe' because the uncomfortable conversations are suppressed or shunted to the side with reasons like 'politics' and whatnot.

I used 'house dressing' in quotes because I was not aware of any official term for it, but it makes sense that the most fake of the Western cultures does 🤪
It is only fairly obvious if you know that it is happening, but even then it is akin to deception, and contributes to the overall sense of unattainability in much the same way as magazine pictures (and now Instagram, YouTube et al) do for one's overall looks, life, etc.
It is set dressing for the real world, and it is very much a part of everything that is making us feel inadequate.

I know people need their diversions and whatnot, and that some people have few other options, but I am kind of disappointed in how difficult it is to get a decent boycot of the various Big Tech companies off the ground, and then keep it going.

Also, since this is the likely source of some discourse that has crossed my timeline in the past 24 hours, a few thoughts;
1) While schadenfreude is wholly inappropriate, there is a core of truth in any 'this is what you get' type of responses you might see. Because this is not the first time this has happened to someone, it is not unique to Apple, and the above 'cloud sync is not a backup' is a piece of advice that has been given but gone unheeded many, many times.
2) I am kind of rolling my eyes at the 'I have been nothing but loyal for many, many years' vibes this has. Not only does it not really matter to the current situation this person finds themselves in, it reeks of privilege, and entitlement.
3) Because YES, it could totally HAPPEN TO YOU TOO, independent of your technology choices. The KYC legislation as it exists in many countries these days makes it more likely, not less. The resulting fraud detection and response is automated, and imperfect.

This toot reminds me of a thread I did on Twitter, over a decade ago now, about making a self-help comic book for white cis males, aimed at teaching them about privilege, and empathy.
(It would not qualify for the quoted poll, read an actual book)
It would be modeled on the Hero's Journey. The Mentor would be a wise old African woman, who sends our white male on a quest; to defeat that which endangers women most. To do this, our hero would have to defeat Privilege and Supremacy, and free Empathy.
In the process, our hero would learn that the biggest hurdle to fulfilling his quest and returning to the Mentor is himself. To succeed, he would need to defeat his own assumptions first, because they make him powerless against Privilege.
After Privilege has been defeated, he needs to travel across barren lands to find Empathy, and earn the treasure he seeks. Once freed, Empathy grants him two weapons essential to defeating Supremacy; Humility, and the Heart of Empathy.

The weirdest thing about the US government shutdown affecting air travel, to me at least, is that there seems to be no movement that emphasises NOT FLYING.
Like, seriously, what the fuck? I get that there may be some mitigating factors, like having already booked tickets for that national plane travel ritual they call 'Thanksgiving' well in advance, but just not flying doesn't even seem to come up as a consideration.
How about not being an asshole to people in high-stress jobs during what is probably the busiest time of the year, who are now not even getting paid, and showing a little solidarity, while also working on kicking your domestic flying habit?

People aren't being snookered into this. It is not because people aren't being 'heard'. It is a CHOICE, plain and simple, and one they keep making, over and over.

This was after a week in which a majority of the Dutch House voted in favour of a motion to label 'antifa' as a terrorist organisation, explicitly mentioning Trump's baseless accusations.
Followed by literal right-wing riots in the very same city, starting at a anti-immigration demo organised by a mid-twenties white woman who calls herself 'Els Rechts' (think 'Liz Right'), and who of course had never intended to cause all of this despite engaging with social media posts encouraging far-right assholes to join.

Seriously, where do the people who do not fit go? Who cannot be 'productive', or who do not fit into the local societal fabric? Disability, neurodivergence, LGBTQI+ folks.
Who cares for the old folks?
6) How will you deal with knowledge acquisition, preservation, and sharing? History? Skill transference? Some things that are very necessary to remember and retain are going to be very distributed, in such a society. How would you prevent complacency, people thinking they no longer need to invest in and support things they haven't needed for years?
There's a whole lot that comes with cities that people who dream about a quieter life tend to forget about, but which are very essential for the long term survival of society as a whole.

Other people have already touched upon some of this in the thread, but it's the sort of utopia that tends to be unattainable for a number of reasons;
1) Requires severe population compression, or collapse. The kind of shock to the existing system that creates the conditions for change, but disproportionately affects the areas where you could establish such a distributed society.
2) Organising emergency services, including healthcare, firefighting, policing, and disaster response.
3) Where will your technological base come from? If it's not local, how will you acquire, transport, maintain it? Solar panels, for example, other complex electronic components that require cities right now; who makes them? Who builds and maintains your farming equipment, medical devices? Why would they even sell or trade with you?
4) If you have a local technological base, where are your raw materials coming from? How will you mine them at a scale that satisfies the requirements of your society without oppressing anyone else?
5) Where do the 'deviants' go?

It's always rather disappointing to me when older feminists get stuck on second wave feminism, and, even in our current moment, don't consider the entire context of the backlash we are experiencing. Like, yes, the right wing populists are inevitably coming for women's rights, such as the right to bodily autonomy, but to state that it is the first thing they came for is at best incomplete, and at its worst downright dishonest.
Immigrants would like a word, for one, and so would trans people, and other LGBTQI+ folks.
And that's before you get to all the work done by Black women for the third wave, which some white feminists apparently still have not recognised.

Your nerd notions about how long you should get the latest shiny on your older hardware don't really enter into any of these decisions. Most regular folks on older systems don't upgrade macOS on a yearly basis to begin with, because they have better things to do.
And they make poor decisions about what to buy when they do, even with professional advice. My brother, for example, bought a refurbished iPhone 8 instead of a second-gen SE because it was like €40 cheaper 🤷🏻‍♀️
If you want to rant about 'planned obsolescence' or whatever, be mad at Microsoft, and the arbitrary hardware requirements for Windows 11.

The people who deliberately invested in a brand new Intel Mac Pro in 2023 likely (hopefully) did so because they intended to use what is essentially an appliance; hardware purchased as the computing core of a studio, edit bay, or other similar professional purpose, where it might not even be connected to the internets.
They will probably continue to use it long after Apple has officially dropped support for Intel Macs, and there's a high chance that it still runs the version of macOS it shipped with, and hasn't been updated since.
It will be upgraded when there is a business need, not before, such as when it has been depreciated.

Also; anything that fails to address the absolute dominance of Google and Microsoft in the email space, which, as far as I know, isn't even on the EU's radar for DMA enforcement, but which makes it all but impossible for your messages to not end up on their servers, is a broken policy.
Broken to the point where Microsoft can turn its dominance in the corporate email space, itself a result of its dominance in the desktop and office software space, into the only choice for hosting Exchange. The on-prem version will disappear later this year, unsupported.
Both have proprietary APIs, and are phasing out support for standard protocols.

The fact that developers are forced to deal with Apple instead of having direct access to the user is a feature, both in terms of security and convenience.
I have absolutely zero desire or need for a bazillion 'alt’ app stores that only the big players will benefit from, using the App Store as a free distribution channel and then demanding that the user provide their data to them directly, instead of making do with a relatively anonymous Apple Account.
And in the meantime, nothing that would actually be useful is happening, and for some reason, Microsoft is getting away scot-free so far, happily making Windows more dependent.
