The false promise of five thousand a year was a key selling point of the fascists in It Can't Happen Here, the 1935 novel by Sinclair Lewis

Here's what I'm asking my state officials to do in response:
California needs far more of a backstop to deal with the risk that the Postal Service will refuse to deliver ballots in the state. News reports indicate that they're preparing to ignore both the law and court orders, and the reality is that few California residents have voted in person in quite a few years.
The state needs three things:
* A plan to deliver ballots if the postal service does not
* A print-at-home plan to enable people to print their own ballots as exists in at least some parts of Washington State
* Additional capacity at in-person voting locations coupled with publicity to enable people to find out where to vote if necessary

So the plan is to put political officials in charge of deciding which science is ok to do. This naturally means no more study of climate, since Republicans will never approve any funding for that.

Today's letter to my congressmembers:
Launching a major and unnecessary war without the approval of congress or even seriously trying to explain it to the American people is a clear constitutional violation. You need to impeach Trump. Now. Whether or not it gets Republican support, or succeeds.
Doing this articulates a clear vision for keeping the powers of Congress and ongoing constitutional rule. Without it, you're acceding to dictatorship.

Start talking to local politicians about how much you want them stopped. They tend to have a lot of tools to do so.

You can't maintain a complex technical infrastructure indefinitely when keeping it operating depends on retirees who used to work with it professionally volunteering their time. This operational model may well bridge a gap of a few months, but it needs paid staff.

TL;DR; we have something of a choice between long-term instability which kills off the wealthy and powerful, resulting in broader distribution of wealth and power, or an event rather more like the New Deal where wealth and power are nonviolently more broadly distributed

Via the NYT, another chart on how the Republican plan to repeal the Inflation Reduction Act would result in higher greenhouse gas emissions by the US. Not mentioned is that this makes other countries less likely to cut their emissions as well.

Making plastic is the oil industry's exit strategy. Burning it creates incredible air pollution, and recycling it is sufficiently low-value that people burn it just to be rid of the stuff.
It's well past time to limit plastic manufacturing.

Biden has really sharply cut oil and gas leasing.
This is important because once a lease is issued, it's treated as a property right to drill and extract, which makes it much harder to fight.
It's by far the most effective leave-it-in-the-ground measure the President has.
