Current status: frazzled and stressed because I've been sick, and Spouse got so sick that they were admitted to the hospital overnight. They're doing fine now and will be discharged later today. But I'm under a deadline at work and I ran out of sick days anyway so I'm trying hard to concentrate. But as you can see from how I'm posting during the middle of the day, that's challenging. There was this Latvian (I think) folk-rock-electro artist from the late 90s, I can't remember her name or the album name. Just that it had a portrait of her in front of a wall covered in climbing vines. She was really ahead of her time.

Both people here have limited access to health care, very little money, and extreme distrust of psychology and psychiatry. One seems to have beliefs that verge on delusional, and the other one enables those beliefs. I asked for this specifically because I think it will at least provide some useful perspectives and maybe a strategy or two for things like setting boundaries. I don't take my choice of language lightly, so if I'm missing something here that's harmful, please let me know.

So the latest on my local data center fight: the people behind it have belatedly hired someone to do PR for them and a local lawyer. Suddenly, it has always been a hydroponics research project with the server racks just an alternate method of providing the heat needed for indoor growing during the winter. Also, where before they were just "representatives" of Eco Yotta Inc, now they're the actual owners. And gosh maybe they might just move to the town if it all works out! And nevermind about them being able to purchase a multimillion dollar piece of real estate, they drive a Honda so clearly they're not THAT rich! Oh and also neither of them have any expertise in hydroponics but the wife used to run a day care center, so they're also thinking about starting some kind of childcare/child development tracking app.
It all sounds scammy as hell to me. Reality check: am I crazy? Can anyone else read this article and tell me if I'm overreacting? https://archive.is/rwkU0
Their company website has gone from all AI all the time to under construction to [this](https://ecoyotta.com ) and it still triggers my workplace safety filters.
I found out that their company registration was done in California, at an address that has about 150 other companies registered as having their headquarters, too.

"We’re familiar with redlining. The real estate industry, big banks, and the federal government collaborated on home valuation schema that tethered race to risk, denied mortgages to millions of Black and brown people, and ensured most would be trapped in a captive housing market as tenants. But Ansfield’s book studies a later wave and a novel form of extractive abandonment: insurance “brownlining.” After riots erupted in almost 2,000 cities and towns in the late 1960s, Ansfield writes, “insurance personnel were, in a real sense, capitalism’s first responders,” working in an industry that aimed to convert “black resistance … into dollars and cents.” Surveying the damage, many insurance companies declared Black neighborhoods uninsurable. Riots had forced a racial reckoning—and inspired a racial panic. The federal government cut a deal with the insurance industry that reflected both: In exchange for a government backstop of reinsurance, companies would have to offer property owners in “riot-prone” areas access to Fair Access to Insurance Requirements, or FAIR, insurance plans. But these were “subprime” insurance plans—“‘back of the bus’ insurance,” in the words of one critic. They allowed insurers to charge higher monthly premiums for inferior coverage, and their exorbitant cost meant that generally only white absentee landlords could afford them. Far from a “remedy” for racist harms, FAIR plans turned racist fears into market logic.
Landlords often put this logic to work. Ansfield relates the story of Imre Oberlander and Yishai Webber, who in 1975 were among the first landlords indicted for arson conspiracy in the Bronx. When the duo were pulled over because of a broken taillight, officers discovered a pair of Hasidic men in blackface—along with two explosive devices. Ansfield suspects that to Oberlander and Webber, blackface must have seemed like its own “form of insurance.” Racism provided the cover, but FAIR plans had laid the economic kindling. One study published by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago suggests that in New York state, FAIR plans led to 13,000 excess fires in a single year."
...
"Burned-out buildings also proved valuable for constructing the politics of law and order. “The cruel irony,” writes Ansfield, “was that to survive the fires was to become their scapegoat.” Ansfield cites Democratic New York senator and Nixon adviser Daniel Patrick Moynihan throughout the book, and it’s worth revisiting Moynihan’s thinking in further depth here. Already in 1970, in his “Memorandum on the Status of Negroes,” Moynihan had warned the Nixon administration that the country was “heading for a genuinely serious fire problem in American cities,” because, he wrote, “the types of personalities which slums produce” were prone to “fire‐setting.”"

"Green capitalism will never facilitate the scale of action that is necessary to keep warming below 1.5ºC or even 2ºC because it refuses to take on the powerful people and industries that are fueling the climate crisis in the first place. It continues to ensure the benefits flow to the top while hollowing out the middle class and producing climate narratives that shift the burden of responsibility onto those who have little power to make the necessary changes: the public, if not the global poor."
Reminds me of the book that just came out about who burned the Bronx. *Born In Flames* by Bench Ansfield.

The Guardian once again exposing why people are wary of their journalism when it comes to trans people. This article (archived link, no paywall) about female intersex athletes being over-represented starts out saying that these athletes "went through male puberty". These, to be clear, are people who have breasts and vaginas and were assigned female at birth. People who identify as girls and women and always have. Cheek swabs are destroying women's careers, all in the name of "protecting women". More of a "protection racket for women," really. Nice sports career, be shame if anything were to happen to it.

I just found out, thanks to my local newspaper, that a brand new company called Eco Yotta Inc. is aiming to build a data center outside my tiny little town.
https://www.bizprofile.net/ny/oneonta/eco-yotta-inc
There is absolutely no information about either the company or its registered owner, Tirusha Pankaj Dave, online. Their website is a barely-registered generic techbro cutout.
What's extra troubling is that the city has a whole industrial district that has plenty of room for such a thing, but they bought 153 acres of residentially zoned land which they want the city to re-zone.
I'm so annoyed.

So this is a bit niche even for enviro-nuts like me but if you're down to sign petitions, this one could use it. Tell SUNY ESF to drop their partnership with the dangerous, unproven, and disrespectful "Darling 58" genetically modified chestnut tree makers SilvaBio.
If you read "The Overstory," you may be familiar with the tale of chestnut trees in North America: afflicted by an invasive blight and then prematurely chopped down by panicking white people, to the extent that chestnut trees almost went extinct. Now this private company has been working with ESF to develop blight-resistant trees, but even though their results are poor, and even though indigenous communities of the northeast, such as the Onondaga Nation, have been urging a traditional breeding approach, and even though SilvaBio's stated intent to sell the trees for profit is in conflict with ESF's mission for "all people... to propagate them for personal or restoration use," ESF has been sticking with SilvaBio.

Back at the end of March, the FBI kidnapped a Chinese academic couple, Xiaofeng Wang and his wife Nianli Ma. Apparently they're now free, but Indiana University, which employed them both, shamefully fired both of them without any process or explanation, and they were never charged with any crimes. Now they're seeking to unseal the warrant that was used to justify the raid on their house and their detention.
Another thing I learned from looking this up: the "China Initiative" which was basically a quota for the FBI to file cases against people linked to China somehow. Trump started it and Biden took two years to end it. This episode has people thinking it's back.

Watershed Sentinel, a magazine based in CANADA*, has several articles about #DeGrowth in its latest issue, including one by the hottest Degrowther (imo, I don't know what all of them look like), Timothée Parrique, debunking the idea of decoupling/green growth.
The other articles are worth checking out too. Environmental news from all around the west and northwest, e.g. the Pacific herring population appears to be in collapse.

"Now that Trump has dealt a decisive deathblow to the post-Obama political system, it’s worth taking stock of where that moment went. Postmortems on Bidenomics have tended to focus on climate provisions, rising protectionism in trade, and the macroeconomics of stimulus and inflation. The limits of the administration’s “industrial policy,” touted as marking a “post-neoliberal” paradigm shift, have been extensively documented; it was always a national security program first—an ill-conceived reaction to fears of a rising China—and a pro-worker agenda second, if at all. The bigger, less talked-about picture is the long arc of ten years of failure to confront inequality after the Piketty moment in 2014. Across four key policy areas—taxation, labor standards, the welfare state, and antitrust—Democrats could have pursued a comprehensive program for combating plutocracy and empowering workers. But the opportunity was frittered away through a relentless focus on playing by the old rules of policy debate and routing reform through the usual elite channels, insulated from—and often outright hostile to—the voices and views of on-the-ground constituencies. All that came at the cost of forging a durable political coalition."

1) There was a talk at my local library about the history of transgender medicine in the USA. Given by a doctor who has a practice here.
2) My mom went. She said it was packed, standing room only.
3) Mom signed up to provide free temporary housing for trans people who travel from far away to get treatment at the clinic.

Hey listen up! Literally!
If you have a Libro.FM membership, you can get a free credit just by telling them that you super promise you listened to at least 10 hours of audiobooks during February.
If you don't have a Libro.FM membership, maybe you can still get a free audiobook credit anyway, I'm not sure.
Anyway, Libro.FM is a nice alternative to Audible and they share a portion of their proceeds from every purchase with a local participating independent bookshop of your choice! #reading #AudioBooks #books @npub1q60…kp90 @npub1ny7…uv57 https://blog.libro.fm/love/?utm_source=Libro.fm&utm_campaign=b537c730c3-Consumer_For+the+Love+of+Audio_020525

It's not unusual to read an academic paper that concludes "more research is needed," but it is unusual for academic writers to conclude "more research is needed on the subject of how to change the politics of this world!"
"Finally, the question of politics emerges as an important research frontier. Whereas science is advancing on the questions of desired pathways, provisioning systems, and policies for a post-growth economy, we still know little about the politics that could make post-growth transitions possible in reality. A particular blind spot concerns geopolitical relations, and how changes in international governance and world orders open up, or close down, opportunities for post-growth and sovereign development."
Anyway, this paper was not as long as I thought, since the lower half of it is all citations. Go ahead and check it out!

"You just want everyone to be poor and miserable!" is what capitalism apologists say (with zero sense of irony). Nope, they're either uninformed or lying--and I seriously urge you to go with "lying" as the default, in order to reduce the potential for mischief by bad actors.
> "Empirical research points therefore to an important conundrum. On the one hand, high-income countries achieve high levels of human wellbeing but significantly overshoot their fair share of planetary boundaries. The level of resource use of these high-income countries cannot be universalised. On the other hand, despite a decline in the amount of energy required to achieve human development goals, modelling decent living standards for all within planetary boundaries shows that, under existing conditions, there is very little room for excess or for inequality.
> This research has led to a shift of attention towards alternative provisioning systems and the types of distributional dynamics that could radically change current relationships between resource use and human wellbeing... A recent review of industrial transformation models and scenarios found that combined supply-side and demand-side measures could reduce current economy-wide material use by 56%, energy use by 40–60%, and greenhouse gas emissions by 70% to net zero."

Growth as a goal for societies is basically brand new.
> "Historians and social scientists have sought to explain the origins of the political hegemony of growth: the dominance of the pursuit of GDP growth as a political objective. Growth might not be an economic imperative in the abstract, this literature suggests, but rather a political imperative, locked in by power relations, institutions, and accounting systems geared towards its pursuit. The contemporary preoccupation with GDP first emerged as a response to the need of governments to manage economic production during the Great Depression and the Second World War, whereas growth-targeting became entrenched during the Cold War, linked to the arms race between the two blocs. An iterative process between accounting and targeting, and the institutions geared towards the measurement and pursuit of GDP, gradually made growth appear as a natural and unquestionable objective. But the success of growth, as a political objective, stems from its function, which was to appease and deflect distributional conflict, becoming a core factor of state legitimacy and political stability."
Btw basically every sentence in this has citations, in case you want to read MORE. I'm taking the citation numbers out to make for easier reading.

We are the weak point of their fantasies and self-esteem. Our existence as autonomous beings calls the foundations of their ideology into question.

But isn't lack of growth destabilizing?
"Economic research has shown that the desired (or optimal) rate of consumption growth might decline to close to zero if (environmental) risks associated with new technologies and people's preferences for safety are taken into account. From a post-growth perspective, the problem then is not that growth might be coming to an end, but rather that, given that economic and political systems are dependent on growth for their stability, stagnation under capitalism poses substantial risks to institutional stability. How to prosper without growth therefore becomes a crucial question."

On human wellbeing vs GDP:
"The social limits hypothesis holds that there is a limit to the extent that growth improves subjective wellbeing, because humans adapt to higher levels of income, and compare themselves to others who are also getting richer, or because additional production goes towards zero-sum status goods. The social cost hypothesis is that above a certain level of GDP, the costs of growth (eg, congestion, pollution, mental health, social upheaval) might offset its wellbeing benefits.90 Growth is said to become uneconomic."

"Decoupling"? It's possible but extremely unlikely (authors being politic here); "the post-growth field suggests taking a precautionary approach, given the historical record and the rapid narrowing of the window to prevent ecological breakdown. Post-growth, it should be emphasised, does not state that decoupling economic activity from emissions and getting to net zero emissions is impossible, just that it is made harder by economic growth. For energy and material use, which can only be reduced and never brought to zero, the necessary reductions are easier to achieve with post-growth."

Revisiting "Limits To Growth" on its 50th anniversary:
"Scientists have also sought to assess the validity of the Limits to Growth model by looking at how well it fits historical trends since its publication. Previous studies have explored how the various runs of the Limits to Growth model compare with actual trends and suggest that the world is most closely tracking the Double Resources scenario, which differs from the Standard Run in its assumption that the initial stock of non-renewable resources is twice as large as the Standard Run resource stock (figure 1). In this scenario, collapse occurs later and is driven not by scarcity of non-renewable resources (ie, a source limit), as in the Standard Run, but by persistent pollution and its impact on ecosystem stability (ie, a sink limit, otherwise known as a regenerative capacity limit)."

Some choice quotes from new Lancet study on #degrowth or #PostGrowth and planetary health:
"Doughnut, wellbeing, and steady-state economics generally position their proposals within the current capitalist system, whereas degrowth is critical of the possibilities of an egalitarian slowdown within capitalism given that capitalist competition is structurally geared towards growth. Degrowth therefore emphasises the need for a planned, democratic transformation of the economic system to drastically reduce ecological impact and inequality and improve wellbeing. Degrowth, similarly to steady-state economics, regards a lower GDP as a probable outcome of efforts to substantially reduce resource use. Reducing GDP is not a goal of these approaches, however, but, it is seen as something that economies need to be made resilient to. The Doughnut and wellbeing approaches are more agnostic about GDP growth, but still view it as a poor measure of progress. Post-growth is plural and open to all these perspectives. All approaches converge on the need for qualitative improvement without relying on quantitative growth, and on selectively decreasing the production of less necessary and more damaging goods and services, while increasing beneficial ones."

Source: https://crimethinc.com/2018/02/19/escaping-washington-for-freedom-lets-not-celebrate-george-washington-but-the-slaves-who-escaped-him
"As Marcus Rediker and Peter Linebaugh describe in The Many-Headed Hydra, the American Revolution began in the 1760s with a series of protests and riots involving sailors, slaves, stevedores, working women, and other marginalized people. Networked in a global ferment involving mutinies, slave revolts, and strikes, these disturbances threatened to undermine the entire imperial order. Sensing that the empire was overextended and upheaval was inevitable, the colonial elite set themselves at the head of the rebellion, using it to free themselves of the financial burden of supporting the Crown. George Washington and his colleagues were not the initiators of the revolt, but the ones who coopted and contained it—a lesson about what happens when revolutionaries seek to gain legitimacy and resources through alliances with the upper class."

On the first day of #BlackHistoryMonth, let's celebrate the many, many enslaved/indentured people who ran away from George Washington. The only USA president with a greater (inflation-adjusted) net worth than Washington is Trump. The USA has always been a threat to the world.
Most but not all of these people were Black. Many escaped multiple times. Some managed to do it permanently. Names listed twice are not the same people. Names listed together are people who escaped together.
