When I was a kid, a family friend bought a property that had an old plantation house on it. He took us in the basement and showed us where they'd chain the misbehaving slaves up to whip them. I wanted to go up to the second floor to look around, also. He said no, because the stairs were rotten and would collapse. I was very disappointed.
This picture brought back that memory, because I'd also look at these stairs and feel like the second floor was out of reach.

If you ever consider Alabama, stay out of the larger cities (Huntsville, Birmingham, Montgomery, Mobile), and anywhere on this map that is blue. Blue=niggers. That band of blue is full of really fucking dumb ones, too, even for nigger standards.
The red parts are fuckin' awesome. Especially that dark red streak across the top middle (above the single blue county). That's almost all Whites, and many of them are racist as fuck.

I've never been able to verify this, and it's probably not true, because I don't see how they'd cover it up. But that April 27, 2011 tornado that raped Tuscaloosa, Alabama went right through a trailer park full of illegals. Someone told me they found dozens and dozens of dead bodies that they couldn't identify because the people had no ID.

The wing was a cosmetic add-on. It actually slowed the car down. Cost $4000 extra. People used to joke that you could have a Countach with a wing or a Countach with no wing and a Yugo, and save $10.
I had the Alpine poster on my wall as a kid. My mom threw it away when I went to college. It was packed up in the basement with my other stuff and for some reason she went through my stuff and got rid of a bunch of it.

One of the other tropes was two hot girls in a Lamborghini Countach. If they got pulled over, they'd sweet talk the cop while showing off dem titties. Those movies really cemented the Countach as THE supercar of the 1980's and caused an entire generation of young men to associate them with boobs.

It was an actual race in the 70's called The Sea-To-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash. They drove from one side of the country to the other as fast as possible. Not legally.
The Cannonball Run movies are fictionalized comedies about the actual race.
One of the contestants in the real race was Hal Needham, a Hollywood stunt driver-turned-director who made the Cannonball Run movies, Stroker Ace, and Smokey and the Bandit.
The ambulance from Cannonball Run was based on his own entry in the 1979 race, in which he, his wife, and a friend drove a modified ambulance at high speed and claimed they were transporting a very sick individual if they got pulled over. They had a whole story about how she couldn't be flown and needed to get across the country as quickly as possible.

One of my parents' best friends saw the trend coming and bought a video store franchise in the early 80's. We were early adopters because of that. That is also how I managed to memorize every single line of Cannonball Run II in the early 80's by recording it off of HBO and then watching it every morning for an entire summer vacation.
I could say the lines along with the movie for a long time. Now I just remember snippets. "Wing tips? Barbarians. Come, come. Buy yourselves a decent clothing store."

Another thing to remember: When Star Wars came out, the idea of home video was still in its infancy. Even by the time ROTJ came out, it was still not THAT common for people to have VCRs in their homes.
If you saw a movie you loved, you had to go watch it in the theater again. A few years later, you MIGHT get to see it on TV, if you were home when it came on and your parents would let you watch it instead of whatever they wanted to watch.
But look at the Star Wars playsets. You can re-imagine the entire movie by acting it out on your bedroom floor, if you have enough doods and all the different ships and vehicles. So right after you saw Empire for the first time, you NEEDED that Snow Speeder and one of the AT-ATs. And a tauntaun and a flammin-with-the-flimflam droid.
It was fucking perfect.

One of the strangest phenomena I've seen with the whole Star Wars fandom is that the original fans believed the second trilogy was for them, and it was actually for people who were ten years old when it came out. Each Star Wars movie was targeted at whoever would actually play with the toys that came out at the same time. And if you watch them with the idea that you're letting your ten year old self watch, they're more enjoyable.
My experience is that Gen Xers and older Millennials tend to hate the prequels, while members of the target audience loved them and remember them fondly.
I wonder if Zoomers and Gen Alpha are going to remember this last trilogy with more fondness than it is being afforded now. Disney may suck in a lot of ways, but they're usually really, really good at siphoning money from parents' pocketbooks through children. Even the soccer ball robot was designed to appeal specifically to children, right down to the sound design of the noises it made being something that children could replicate with their own mouths.

So the story behind me having two half-mask respirators is that one day I needed my respirator, which I was pretty certain was a 3M brand (which I bought because I wanted to be sure I could find 3M bayonet cartridges for it), and it was nowhere to be found. I searched everywhere I thought it MIGHT be, and it wasn't there. So I gave up and went to Home Depot and bought the exact same model again. And when I got home, I opened my front door and the missing respirator was sitting in the middle of the living room, on the floor. I would have tripped over it when I left if it had been there then.
So I figured I was getting punked by a ghost and now I had two respirators.
Then I bought a 3M 6900 full face respirator during Covid when I thought the government might come try to gas me out of my house to force me to take the vaxx. I thought it used the same bayonet cartridges as the half mask respirators I have, but now I'm not sure.
I'm going to pull the cartridges off both types of mask and compare them later. I don't want masks that take multiple kinds of cartridges, so I may be giving away these Gersons and buying a 3M half mask respirator for when I don't want to fool with the full face one.

I model in O scale. It's nice to be able to work at a scale that doesn't require me to wear the dentists loupes for everything, but it is challenging to fit everything I want to build.
I have long wanted to build a replica of the Birmingham Terminal Station. Someone built one in O scale, and I've seen it in person. The building alone takes up an entire 4x8 sheet of plywood. The rail yard and platforms would take up another one.

I'm some sort of commie. I have never, ever used DoorDash, Lyft, or Uber for anything. Last time I went to NYC, I insisted on using yellow cabs instead of Uber, even though Uber was supposedly cheaper.

My parents still have the little Kitchenaid that was in my Granddad's restaurant in the 50's. I haven't checked recently, but for years after Hobart sold off the Kitchenaid name, they were still making more or less the same mixer as a Hobart-branded one for restaurant use, and they were designed to be repaired, not replaced. So it's completely rebuildable with new parts if necessary.

We had my granddad's ice cream maker when I was a kid. It was already about 50 years old when I was born. The kids had to take turns sitting on it and cranking it if we wanted ice cream.
When I bought my house, my mom gave me the old Oster Kitchen Center she had when I was a kid. I found an ice cream maker attachment for it at a thrift store for $5.
It works fantastic. One neat feature about it is that it uses regular salt and ice out of the ice maker instead of rock salt and crushed ice. It also makes a fairly small amount of ice cream, which is nice because I don't want a huge amount. And it's fast enough that if I needed more than the 1qt or so that it makes, you can just make more and different flavors.
I haven't seen the Kitchenaid attachment. I have an old K5 from when they were still owned by Hobart. I'll have to check to see if it can make ice cream, too. Nice to have options.

Having temporarily gotten involved in local politics a few years ago, can say that I've seen zero evidence to refute this and a LOT of evidence to support it. They think absolutely nothing of robbing the citizens they are meant to represent, and can't comprehend why they are being attacked when it comes apart. When I was like 10 I had a fit over the Mr. Gasket "Foot" accelerator pedal at the speed shop, so my dad bought one and put it in his '66 Corvette. I always figured I'd put one in the Malibu, but never did before I traded it.

It started being available in high-end cars in the late 1950's. Mid-60's it was a pretty common option, especially in the South. My '67 Malibu had factory AC. My dad's '66 Corvette does, too.
The systems were not as good as the modern blended air systems, but you can get upgrades from Vintage Air for most of the older cars. You'd get a much more modern AC system, using commonly available R134a, with a much better working defog/defrost setting, if you did the upgrade, and their kits typically use a control panel that looks like the factory units.

I keep my eyes open. My appetite for projects is much larger than my garage or budget.
I've already got an S-10, a Jeep J10, a Supra, and a '73 Corvette project. Plus my dad has a coupe of projects that I'm involved in ('66 Corvette, '91 Corvette ZR1).
I'd really like to build a Corvair at some point, and I think a Corvair Monza with EFI/Electronic ignition would be a cool car to daily. They're still reasonably priced, too. But I also wouldn't mind trying a Beetle with a Freeway Flyer transmission as my daily.

My first car was a '67 Malibu. I honestly wouldn't mind having another one as my daily driver. Mine had a Powerglide 2 speed automatic and drum brakes. I'd want 4 wheel discs, a 4 speed overdrive auto, and a mild 5.3l engine in it and I'd be happy to drive it to Hell and back.

My understanding is that the Southern accent is more closely in line with British pronunciation from a couple hundred years ago than the modern British accent. The nonrhotic R is a fairly modern occurrence.

I had a friend who married a girl from up north, and when he went to Thanksgiving dinner with her family, his mother-in-law offered him "Pee Can Pie." He said he would love a slice of pecan pie. They made fun of his pronunciation, and he looked the mother-in-law in the face and said, "Do you grow them here? No? It's 'puh-CAHN.'"
Then he explained that a pee can is what you keep under your bed so you don't have to go to the outhouse in the middle of the night.

I prefer Crystal to Louisiana, and definitely prefer it to Franks, but none of them are close to being as good as Alabama Sunshine. But it's difficult to find outside of Alabama.

Trying to remember my favorite onion ring dipping sauce, I think it was mayo based and had black pepper flavor, along with vinegar tang and a bit of capsaicin heat. Probably like comeback sauce but I've never looked up a recipe for comeback sauce.
If Inwas going to try to make it from memory, I would probably do a kewpie mayo base with black pepper, Worcestershire, and Crystal, and go from there. Maybe try paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder in it, too.

I grow reapers, red morugas, and 7-pot yellow peppers. I made hot sauce out of the reapers and red morugas last year and gassed myself right out of the kitchen. Then I spilled some of the hot sauce on my hand when trying to bottle it and my hand burned for three days.
When I finally had the guts to try the hot sauce, it was freaking delicious. Probably too hot for most people, but I think spicy pepper heads would love it. I'm going to make more this year, but I'm going to wear my full face respirator and my thick nitrile chemical gloves when I do. I'm going to do each of the three super hot peppers separately and then see if I can blend them together in a pleasant ratio.

I went and ate "The best chicken salad in Alabama" a couple of months ago and dissected it and wrote about it here. It had grapes in it.
Grapes are good in chicken salad. They give a nice little pop of sweetness.
