Depends. Are you using the positive side as the 0V reference point? If so, then yes. The negative terminal would be -12V.
But if you use the negative terminal as the 0V reference point then it is 0V and the positive terminal is +12V.
It's always relative to a reference voltage, and typically the "negative" terminal is the reference voltage.

There's so much cool stuff to learn about how everything in cars works, and works together. It boggles my mind how anybody can hate cars so much.
There's so much engineering and materials science that goes into The Thing You Drive To Work And Back that makes it work reliably for years on end with only basic service by replacing some expendable fluids and wear items.

Another chapter in my ongoing frustrations with dogshit documentation. This is the *simplest fucking thing* I could do in Jupyter Notebook running the SageMath kernel, I've basically followed the examples I'm finding in Sage's own tutorials and docs, and I'm getting fricking error messages instead of an actual fucking plot.
Same error messages even with f(x) = x^2. IT COULD NOT BE ANY SIMPLER AND SOMEHOW IT ERRORS OUT WITH A GENERIC PYTHON ERROR. WHY. WHY. WHY.
(This was a PEBKAC problem)

And a car takes up many more cubic meters of volume than that.
It DOES NOT take much flood water to outweigh your car, and when it's MOVING it is putting literal tons of force on the side of your car. Even a few inches of water is enough to wash your car off the road.

Watching a video full of "Scary Weather and Nature Fails" (not all of them are remotely scary, more funny) and it's reminded me of an important thing to remember about water:
It's Heavy Shit™
A cubic meter of water, and this IS a volume you can measure out at home with a few meter/yard sticks (sue me for mixing units why don't you), weighs roughly one ton (does not matter if it's metric or US customary; the units are within 10% of each other).

I just assume that anyone talking about Javascript is referring to ECMAScript unless they're explicitly referring to node.js.
Javascript has some awkward syntax in a few spots, but I think it's pretty inoffensive in that regard.
Most of its weirdness I personally believe comes from the fact it was slapped together over a weekend when Brendan Eich's employer (Netscape) wanted a killer feature for their hot new product to be imminently released. He had to put something together, FAST.

Javascript is Good, Actually.
Stop pointing to the same two or three flaws that are now vestigial remnants of its slapdashed 1994 relese and move on with your [generic you] fucking life.
It still has those API functions because websites made in the 90s and never updated still have to work today.
Just don't write scripts that do those stupid, often aribrary and contrived things in the first place because we can avoid those footguns now.

In short: I want to build a blog that federates on both ActivityPub (known to be possible) AND ATProto (not sure if possible without needing to also download a crapton of unnecessary data to have to maintain)
ATProto federation is the bugbear because it's not actually a fully federated protocol, so I can't just spool the ATProto side up as a standalone instance, I think.

If I hosted my own private analytics tracker (something like Matomo (née Piwik), e.g.) just so I could have funny numbers to look at because I like to look at numbers but do nothing meaningful with them, would that require a cookie banner?
I'd pondered about just having a static notice in the footer of my site that just says "This site uses some functional cookies and one (1) tracking cookie for a self-hosted analytics dashboard because I like to look at Numbers™."

Gods, CSS is absurdly OP now.
This is a real CSS rule that I wrote that really does actually work:
p+dl {
text-indent: 0;
margin-top: 0;
&:has(+p) {
margin-bottom: 0;
}
}
It targets a definition list that immediately follows a paragraph, and sets text indent and top margin 0.
But INSIDE, it also targets that AND if the definition list has a paragraph immediately following it, it sets bottom margin 0.
A dl following a p with no p after it retains its bottom margin.

I'd like to source opinions and recs from the #linux fedi mind hive.
I've been planning for a while to switch my main gaming & decompression PC BACK to Linux for the first time since I was in college maining Ubuntu over a decade ago.
Bazzite looks tempting. I strongly value the peace of mind of being able to roll back from a botched update just so I can decompress after work but I have some misgivings about immutable systems.
Anybody have opinions & tips about Bazzite? Recs for alt distros? >

Self-hosting is not the future. It takes a LOT of work and computer-knowing to set up and maintain something like a private cloud or even just a NAS.
That's why I want to be the one to set up and maintain a private *community* cloud for my circle of friends & family. It's going to be a community project.

If you connect both TRIG and THRESH to the same input signal and ignore DISCH and CNTRL entirely, then Q (output) acts as a schmitt buffer, going high only when the input signal rises above 66.7% VCC and the output is low, and going low only when the input signal falls below 33.3% VCC and the output is high.
I feel extremely proud of myself for coming up with that entirely on my own, just by having somehow ingrained an intuitive sense of the 555's integrated circuit. 😄

Why, yes. That *is* a NE555 timer. What's it doing amongst all this CMOS logic? Why, it's a ✨ schmitt buffer ✨ that delays the falling edge of the 4059's output pulse by a microsecond in order to force overlap with CLK\_Hour so that the 4027 doesn't get clocked when the next hourly pulse that ends the 4059's output high comes along. Don't worry, it *should* work fine with the next CLK\_Hour after that because each of those pulses is going to last for at least a minute if not longer.

You're preaching to a choir, here. 😛 I know all too well about how huge American trucks have become in the 3½ decades I've been alive, and I loathe it just as much as anyone else who does.
I drive a 2025 Colorado as part of my job. A supposed "mid-size" truck. I almost can't even reach over the sides of the bed. I have to drop the tailgate every time, and it's *way* heavier than it should be for a truck of its size, too.

The numbers given are indeed correct. It's the scaling of the truck silhouette against the miata that made me have to do a mental double-take.
It's not that far off, as you say, but it's *just enough* that it looks sufficiently plausible that American trucks really are That Gargantuan compared to plucky little roadsters, that someone without an intuition of the true size comparison wouldn't notice it.

I literally stayed up an extra 10 minutes on top of an hour+ past when I should have gone to sleep because the scale between the two vehicles did not match my intuition of their sizes and I had to stop and double-check my sanity.
I'm not going to defend the absurd sizes of trucks and SUVs on our roads. They're hideously oversized.
But I am also not going to defend misinformation designed to fit "too well" into the anti-truck policy narrative, either.

That graphic is very subtly misleading.
Taking the given lengths as truth (I looked up the F-250's dimensions, and it's close enough): 6.36m/3.947m = 1.6x longer
As a crude check, I held a ruler up to the graphic and measured the Miata bumper to bumper: 5.3"
5.3" x 1.6 = 8.5" the predicted length of the F-250 by comparison.
I measured the F-250: 9" b2b.
The scale is faked ever so slightly, but enough to significantly exaggerate the truck's already ridiculous size even moreso.

I think it has to do with Wayland not properly supporting stylus tablets in certain art softwares like Krita, et al., necessitating the user of X-Wayland. But I don't remember details cuz it's been months.

Wayland still has serious problems that need to get fixed that make it a hard-stopper for some people who genuinely want to use Linux as their main but are forced to keep using X11 or X-Wayland because Wayland literally does not have the hardware support that they need.
And it honestly feels like Wayland's proponents just don't care about that enough. They just insist that you should switch to different software, without caring to understand how much that screws up workflows.

The fact that there is no requirement for any USB-C device to clearly label what protocols are supported by each port (let alone what protocols cables support!!) this can become a support nightmare. But even that labeling isn't going to be useful if such devices are used by someone who does not even know about this or what the protocol symbols mean, so you can end up in situations where the user is pissed the shiny new Type-C plug thing they bought won't work!

Also fun fact: USB 3 type C ports have an analog audio device alt mode that is literally a headphone jack in the guise of a type C port. Four of the pins become analong audio pins for left & right out, mic in, and analog ground (separate and distinct from digital ground).

100 is you're getting severely scalded
Fahrenheit:

This is, fortunately, less of a problem with 5GHz wifi routers, although then you have the wall penetration issue with 5GHz and putting the router at one end of the house causes problems for the other far end of the house.
But any wifi on 2.4GHz absolutely gets trashed by a running nuke, especially if the nuke has poor shielding. 😂

I really like using self checkouts because I don't have to make awkward small talk with a cashier or seem like an antisocial asshole for not doing so, and because I REALLY prefer to bag my own groceries so they can be staked neatly in the bags without crushing each other...

Though I will say, I would be piiiiiining for a Micro Center. That's like the only place left that I enjoy just going to window shop at. A small town just wouldn't have anywhere for me to go without taking a long and tiring day trip into the nearest big city, or next big city over, depending... 😭

Honestly though that might actually be kind of a dream. Living in a small town with a vibrant furry (and kink friendly) community.
Though that would probably be much to the chagrin to the locals who've lived there for generations... or moved there to get away from the weird big city slickers...

I inevitably gave up on the federated timeline of my home server BECAUSE of all the bareskin human porn, even despite me blocking and muting accounts left right and center.
Somehow more would pop up, which leads me to believe there are some folks here who probably follow nothing BUT bareskin porn and I honestly think that's kind of sad.
I got tired of fighting a losing battle, so I just yeeted the federated timeline entirely off my masto pro mode view.
