Trying to figure out what longish run to do. I've been haunting Willow Creek for months, do I go there again or find something else? I have run everywhere. One bucket list run I've not yet done is up King Ridge Road to the Devil's Ribs. The downside being I'd have to jump in a car and drive there.

Running and poets. Moving through the land, we reflect on it. Running is so visceral, when I think of the route or the training or the landscape it's either immediate (and felt, not thought) or through some kind of reflection. Ashbery knew the power of the mirror to situate and illuminate, and turned his study into a world view. Here in Montana, my Cali home is just in my mind's eye - grinding through this second half of life. So here is a June Montana route in a mirror to frame today.

I ran up to that summit once. It's not that hard a climb. Starts about cloud level on the right there, switchbacks a couple times up. that slope on the right , goes behind, then comes up in that low point along the "ridge". From there it's not that much more climbing to the summit. The whole thing is very exposed to sun. 10-11 miles round trip.
But it's an hour's drive to the trailhead, so I've only done it once :)

Mt St Helena from Stoetz Lane.
Home, to me, is to sail on a sea of fog.
Beyond that mountain is Clear Lake - it's like the rim of this universe.
I love all the worldly pics I get to see here, so this one shares my neighborhood and my most basic of runs. So everyday to me, this view conveys a bit of the magic that California nestles in its vast empty corners.

The rain has ceased, the water world of the last week is draining, mud is ascendant. Ran to the vista w dog and beheld distance. The edge of the world is comforting. The Pacific is utterly massive, majestic, grounding in that it defines the boundary of our habitat.

Long run today. There is so much goodness to be wrung out of spending a couple hours running. You cover enough ground to create a sense of wonder in human abilities, and the world snaps into a topology of access as the math of covering ground becomes more evident.
Along the way you might get a chance to stop and frame something that usually is a flash by whilst automobiling.

It's a fascinating topic. Somehow I think it's connected to labor and organizing. Engineers have always (in my era, yada) provided better value when tightly coupled to OSS. So in the incipient labor-forward software world when we rise up and demand reasonable practice from our employers...

On my run this morning a dog bit me and I'm disappointed and annoyed. I come across a lot of dogs while running, some off leash and some aggressive, but this is the first time one actually went for me. Nothing serious but it does hurt.
So annoyed I'm posting a beautiful pear blossom.

Yesterday I was determined to reboot the running. Left phone (camera) behind and shot film. New shoes, first since injury and the old pairs are getting pretty worn, mileage unknown as I stopped tracking. New notebook (last one filled with dribs and drabs, no mileage records.)
The maple leaves are just starting to unfurl.
I'm done with the injury now, moving on. It was some complex autistic gymnastics, dealing with that failed marathon and injury. I locked in CBT immediately to insulate my disappointment and carried on. But now I see I've been processing all of those typical runner feelings while trying to find my post injury self, spinning between denial, shame, fortitude, ennui and hope.
Thank you to runners of mastodon for the perspectives and continuity.
So I finished the 2nd roll and developed the last many months of pictures. Now a wee candy store of images awaits.

So glad you asked! A quintessentially American experiment, FDR mobilized vast public works projects one attempt to bootstrap the country out of depression. These teams built so much of 20th century America - but it's hidden by even bigger projects after WWII and tinged with a smear of socialism too, which of course is a dirty word.

The slide is very big, hard to photograph. The roadbed is there but nothing else - the next atmospheric river will probably knock out the asphalt this week.
So very typical. Human efforts are ever so transient. Fun fact - this iconic bicycle route was originally cut as a WPA project.

Well in my seventies growing up the only thing I learned about soccer was there exists a sport you play without hands (weird!) and there was some apparently famous mononymic guy Pele that you could get on a lunch box.
The only team anyone cared about was the Red Sox.
Is not a shrunken world a thing of wonder?
