Zines are not a Crime! Free Des Revol!

For almost eight weeks, Des Revol has been held behind bars in a federal prison in Fort Worth, Texas. He’s also on an ICE hold. His alleged crime? Zines. The same kinds of zines that can be found in any indie bookstore or little free library, within a collective house or social center, or at a zine fest or bookfair.
Des is charged with evidence tampering and obstruction of justice related to the Prairieland defendants: sixteen people facing serious charges following a noise demo on July 4 in solidarity with those incarcerated at the ICE Prairieland Detention Center in Alvarado, Texas. This allegation, though, is based entirely on a box of zines that Des was supposedly moving in his truck two days later. (He was not even at the noise demo.)
The framing of Des’s case by the federal government should worry all of us. It is a thinly veiled attempt to crack down on resistance, even in the form of written words within a zine.
We’re also worried for Des. While Des is not being charged along with the other Prairieland defendants, his charges are tied to them. And he’s not just at risk of a lengthy federal prison sentence, which is bad enough. Even if released, he is in danger of being kidnapped by ICE and/or assaulted by fascists, who have already targeted him by name.
So we’re gearing up “Zines Are Not a Crime” as a way to more publicly support Des, until he’s free!
We’ve put together a 4-page zine featuring art by Des, who as many of you already know is a tattoo artist, PoC anarchist, immigrant, longtime vegan, and all-around sweetheart. Please print and share them freely, including at letter-writing events to send Des (and others incarcerated folks) lots of “love letters” so that he knows he’s not alone.
