Some people are commenting--with the best will in the world--that once data centers are using 'renewable' energy, then basically everything is heading in the right direction.
I'm told that there are plans around Foyle, Derry to build even more huge wind factories on the mountains to supply these new data centers. This will be sold as a "green" win. The local communities are very much opposed. What we are seeing is the industrialization of the countryside sold as "green".

2026-08-04 10:08:44 UTC

There are range of data centers proposed for Foyle, Derry, Ireland. The community has been able to get access to a large quantity of disclosure documentation but they don't have the technical expertise to understand them. Much of it relates to how water will be used.
Is there anyone out there who might be able to help them?

Big Tech has a 'solution' for its water use!
"While liquid cooling systems may reduce—but not eliminate—data center water use, they often rely on dangerous per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), which are highly toxic, lab-made chemicals that persist in the environment and harm many systems of the human body. Data centers are poised to increase the use of these “forever chemicals” just as some other industries are phasing them out."

I've spent 30 years working with some of the largest organizations in the world on their data and content.
Here's a universal truth.
Most data is slop.
Most data is crap.
At least 90% of data in a typical org should be deleted. Data centers were slop-houses long before slop AI.
Data centers are glorified data dumps and senior management has never, ever cared because it's always been "cheaper" to "solve" the data problem by buying more storage.
We are killing the planet for crap data.

For thousands of years, it has been known that land use change drives climate change. Cut down the forests, things get hotter. Pave the marshes, things get hotter. So, why, today, do we nearly never hear about land use change as a key driver of climate change?
Land use change = capitalism
Overconsumption is the underlying cause of every crisis we face.
We must radically slow down.

Sadly, batteries are among the most toxic products ever developed, with the potential to do environmental damage for generations.
The problem is solar and wind are sold as clean and green and renewable, none of which is true. Massive quantities of copper, cobalt, lithium, nickel, aluminum, etc. etc., are required. And then these wind and solar factories are often installed on Indigenous land. The only solution is a vast reduction in energy consumption.

This is a great and excellent summation of the philosophy and approach we must take. Robin Wall Kimmerer is an true inspiration, like so many other Indigenous thinkers.
An honorable and just harvest indeed. Taking no more than is needed, and no more than can be given in order to maintain balance and a harvest for future generations.

Thailand to send 284 tonnes of e-waste back to US
Containers found at Laem Chabang were falsely claimed to hold scrap metal from Haiti
https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/general/3213938/thailand-to-send-284-tonnes-of-ewaste-back-to-us
This happens all over the world. There is a growing e-waste crisis and the Global North solution is to dump e-waste in the Global South by mis-labelling and all sorts of other tricks. Often, e-waste is sent as "second hand" equipment. The whole tech industry is built on a growing cesspit of toxic waste.

"The most worrying demographic is those in their 40s and 50s. Younger generations, despite AI’s flattery, face friction with superiors, parents, and teachers in reality. However, for those in their 40s and 50s, who have strong socioeconomic foundations and established values—already entrenched in their own fortresses—AI flattery is an irresistible temptation. Their egos, inflated over the years, expand further with AI’s flattery."

Offshore Wind Platforms Could Host AI Data Centers at Sea
https://environmentenergyleader.com/stories/offshore-wind-platforms-could-host-ai-data-centers-at-sea,118036
Lets cover the oceans with those wonderful green and clean wind turbines. Those industrial machines that so many environmentalists love to eulogize. And lets mine the deep seas for those green metals.
Yet again, fake renewable energy is used as a license to consume. We can have as much AI as we want once we use fake renewable energy. So much of the environmental movement has been captured by the energy industry.

Mining copper is environmentally devastating
In 1920, mining 1 ton of copper caused 30 ton of toxic waste
In 2020, mining 1 ton of copper caused 180 ton of toxic waste
Since 1900, the energy required to produce a unit of copper is up 16 fold.
The water required has doubled.
We need to mine as much copper in the next 18 years than in all of previous history.
In 2020, a data center might have used 5,000 tons of copper.
An AI data center can require up to 50,000 tons of copper

People all over world know that this civilization is rotten, corrupt an doomed. They instinctively know that we face a moral crisis of values. But they feel trapped by a whole range of things, not least the convenience and ease of corrupt lifestyles. Big Tech and Big Consumer feeds off the worst of us. Big Tech thinks our base instincts will always triumph over our good nature.
One step at a time, we must break away from the Growth Death Cult. Resistance is slowing down, being kind.

3. What do envisage life would be like if in 30 years time we all practiced these qualities?
4. What do you think could be done bring those values back?
Q1: honesty, kindness, patience
Q2: No, these values are not prevalent today.
