oh and no, none of what the State of Israel is and has been doing—in Gaza, on the West Bank, in Lebanon and Syria, etc—can be considered legitimate self defense. I am not arguing with that.

hey, I appreciate your note. I agree that finding a solution to people dying, now and in the future, is the overwhelming imperative. I think that in the context of talking about it, it is important to make sure we speak the same language. Which one of those definitions we land on doesn't actually matter that much, what matters is that we don't talk at cross purposes and mix definitions. I've been a part of this movement for 20 years and I've seen a lot of problems.

Listen, I'm actually_really well aware_, unfortunately,of what Israel is doing in Gaza. It is the systematic destruction of Gaza as a place in which people can live, and an attempt at the destruction of Gazans as a collective. Which falls squarely under the UN definition, and God willing that will be the ICC verdict and it will be enforced soon in our days. But it's not the systematic extermination of individual people. God forbid.

I'll note that according to the deliberately broad definition of genocide used (for good reason) by the UN, you could definitely call Hamas violence genocidal, especially since so much of it is a matter of proving intent. It is of less concern only because Hamas capacity to inflict violence is relatively low.
Whereas according to the colloquial definition of "systematic extermination," Israel's violence is not genocidal either. We have to pick a definition and stick with it.
