It’s fascinating, and concerning, the degree to which we base our interpretation of events on preconceived beliefs.
Within a couple of hours, I’ve seen posts about the Trump-Zelenskyy meeting that range from scorn for how Zelenskyy spoke during the discussion, to abhorrence of how Trump treated the man sitting across from him.
These responses often start from the assumptions of “this guy is a scammer” or “that guy a monster” and I’m just processing how deeply engrained some of our (allegedly) free opinions and beliefs are, when they’re ultimately built on a body of information consumed from partisan sources that we trust, often in spite of the fact that nearly every source of news is biased. It’s only human. But it’s also scary.
I think the best we can do is trust our intuition - does it feel right? It’s also helpful to listen to our emotions, but especially important question those, and their origins, because emotion can mislead.
Personally, I was sickened by the lack of empathy and compassion shown by our country’s leaders. I recognize the Ukraine war issue is extremely fraught, and with the amount of disinformation and propaganda out there, it’s hard to know exactly what’s right. But the fact is, when someone’s country is being systematically demolished, my heart goes out to them. Maybe that’s weak, or naive.
(It’s not).
It was a hard video to watch, especially after spending so much time on Nostr (and none on Twitter), because I have become a bit accustomed to all the good vibes.
I do believe Trump actually wants to end the war. He may be able to get there, and even if the cost to Ukraine is high, the cost of continued warfare is almost certainly higher (although this is highly contingent on what Putin turns his gaze to next).
Trump was clearly triggered enough to revert to “verbally-abusive-parent” mode. I’m not a shrink, but it’s not hard to see. Zelenskyy’s posture was that of man who has watched an ally turn into an abuser. We’ve already extracted enough minerals from the developing world, so now we’ll do it to Ukraine, so long as they agree to let Russia off the hook for the war?
That shit feels wrong, man.

There can be enough space for men to be masculine and women to be feminine, without rejecting and ostracizing people who don’t vibe with either category. Embrace who you are. If someone rejects that, they can fuck off.
This is true for men in the context of (whichever type of) feminism that rejects masculinity. This is true for women in the face of being pressured to work (or being pressured into motherhood). It’s true for trans people in a world that denies their lived experience.
Indigenous cultures often acknowledge (and respect) an alternative way of identifying oneself, and neurobiological studies show significantly different brain activity and hormones in people who feel different inside vs out.
I have never experienced this feeling, and it would be arrogant to claim that I know much about it.
But I know what it feels like to be a man. It means confidence and standing tall, but that’s very different from abusing your power.
It means respecting (and protecting) the lives and experiences of people around me. It means respecting women’s power, and weakness. It means acknowledging my own strengths and flaws, ones that I share with many of my brothers. Being grounded in masculinity means holding space for the differences between us.
The culture war bullshit is, indeed, bullshit. And pendulums will always swing. But my hope is that, as we move closer to equilibrium, more of us will learn to abide in compassion, and become able to listen without immediately believing OR rejecting the views of those around us, and bring more Light into the lives of those around us. We’re all conditioned by our environment, and it can take immense effort to unravel that conditioning and experience the world for what it is.
I believe in human goodness - it’s why I Bitcoin. It’s why I’m here on Nostr.
But we have a long way to go.

I had an interesting conversation with my cousin yesterday; she was stoked about a particular electric car company’s stock.
I successfully made a case for Bitcoin (and why it’s an entirely different mindset than stock picking) but I also looked into the company she liked. Their stock was doing terribly, and it got me thinking.
If you see a particular industry as having huge upside potential, but want to avoid the risk and nonsense of choosing a winning company, it makes sense to invest in the industry’s dependencies. You might miss a bit of the individual firms’ upside (because profit margins) but you benefit from the industry’s landscape as a whole.
So it got me thinking, what is the Bitcoin network/industry/exonomy dependent on?
Microchips, and energy, for miners… communication infrastructure/internet service for nodes… but in a way, because Bitcoin is money, it’s interconnected with everything. No commerce, no need for Bitcoin (kind of). And it’s simple enough that when Bitcoin pumps, hodlers benefit.
But I’m still thinking about it. As Bitcoin adoption spreads, as more people hold and use it, what are some of the upstream companies/industries — those who aren’t already Bitcoin-adjacent — who will benefit?
(Disclaimer: asking purely out of curiosity. Personally, I’d rather just hold more ice cold corn).

I used to believe that taxes made more sense: “we live in a society that provides certain securities, so it’s fair to contribute to its funding”. Then I learned about money printing, the Cantillon effect, and the war industrial complex.
I’m sure I’m not the only one who would willingly pay a larger share of my income if I could actively choose how those funds were spent (including roads and personal/societal security).
I appreciate living in the country “with the biggest stick”. But I do not consent to paying for the government to blow up kids on the other side of the world, or to subsidize corrupt industry kickbacks, or to [fill in the blank]. I pay for these things because I am forced, under threat of imprisonment, to engage in a contract that I have not signed.
Bitcoin doesn’t fix this: they can’t take my Bitcoin but they can still take my freedom. Bitcoin might — over an extended period of time — improve the incentives and the system that results. I believe that it will.
In the meantime, since they’re gonna print the money into oblivion anyway, then income taxes only serve to 1) slow that process and obscure the public’s perception of inflation and 2) enforce a measure of control and repression over citizens.

If I had to guess, it’s because early nostr adopters (like bitcoiners) are ideologically-driven and trying to improve and change the world.
It seems like more and more people are recognizing that a blockchain is not a great foundation for most “crypto” use cases. It’s slow, clunky, hard to change. Which is exactly what you want to have underpinning a new global monetary system. But a semi-centralized “world computer”, maybe not.
Bitcoin exists to change everything about the world we live in for the better. Nostr has a similar ethos.
Ethereum, even if you believe it has value, seems like much more of a tech project, with various close competitors, and may well follow in the footsteps of AOL and AskJeeves, if/when other “crypto” projects do the same thing better.
IMO, it’s less a matter of subjectivity, and more a question of scale. Bitcoin is unique, and freedom tech is a movement. It’s a meaningfully different system from the investment-tech-token-financialization playground that the broader “crypto industry” inhabits. My two sats ✌️

I think it’s related to the @npub18m7…q955 update that enables selecting multiple images to upload at once.
I chose this one, and then tapped “Add” in the top right. Normally that prompts an “are you sure?” message, but it was very slow to appear so I tapped “Add” a few more times. Then I got the popup, hit yes, and sent the note.
I guess I didn’t notice multiple copies in the note pre-send, but in testing it again here, tapping the “Add” button multiple times before confirming that I want to upload the image does indeed add it multiple times.

Would you believe I haven’t picked one out yet 🫣 unfortunately the good stuff is cellared at my in-laws, so I’ll either need to go shopping tomorrow or open something a bit more casual.
But given free reign, I’d probably go with a vintage Blanc de Blancs (can’t go wrong) or the Favia couple’s second wine “Carbone” from maybe 2013-14, when it was still a high ratio of Cabernet Franc. I have yet to taste a wine I enjoy more than that one.

Nothing has reach compared to YouTube 🤷‍♂️
But as nostr’s userbase continues to grow, and as existing social/media platforms begin to adopt Nostr and convert their apps into clients (a la @npub1v5u…n0v5 podcasts), then having a robust and well-established nostr presence can only set one up for success 🤙
I’d also offer that in Ben’s case, considering his work with HRF, many of the users who seek out his videos may specifically appreciate being able to access the content outside of the big tech silos and heavily surveilled media networks.

Best thing you can do is work with a physical therapist to rebuild core and back strength. Massage and chiropractic can feel great - and can be helpful - but unless it’s coupled with proper strength training, it will always be “there, you feel good now right? Okay, come back twice a week for the rest of your life”.

Well, this is awesome. Is this effectively a “storage” function for your keys?
In other words, does it work as an “air gapped signer” in that you can (in this example) generate and store the keys exclusively on your passport device, and be able to use Amethyst to operate the nostr account without exposing the nsec to amethyst?

I thought twice about it, but I kept it for a reason. I wondered if you would read that and assume that the rest of my post would be fluff. But we’ve had discussions in the past, and ive read many of your notes. Sometimes I agree and sometimes I disagree but usually I find that I respect where you’re coming from.
I hope you’ll reconsider reading the rest, and engaging with it in good faith, if you trust after a couple of years here together that I’m a thoughtful person. (And if not, welp, I can’t please everyone 😉).
I recognize that the line rings of woke cliches. In general, I’m allergic to the wokey stuff. But I had to think about it, and the fact is that the policies I was referring to, that Trump implemented (which I do answer, later in my reply) did not really impact me directly. They pissed me off but they didn’t take away my freedoms. Trump did numerous things that reduced freedoms for a huge number of Muslim people, and brown & black people in general, from early on. For starters. But it didn’t make my life harder in the ways it did theirs.
I think we both believe in freedom as one of the highest societal ideals, and (judging from your handle) we agree that the government+big bank fiat financial system is the root cause of an inordinate amount of suffering and injustice. Sharing that perspective at least, I hope you’ll hold that in the back of your mind if you choose to read my answer.

Not many of my freedoms, being a white, straight man with relative financial stability.
I don’t believe that Donald Trump’s idea of Bitcoin is aligned with the tenet of maximum freedom for every individual to pursue their goals and reach their potential.
On the other hand, I expect him to (again) support numerous social and political moves that further marginalize American minorities and the middle class.
One of the reasons that I believe in Bitcoin is because it gives a real, fair, level-playing-field chance to *everyone*, including groups who have been fucked over by the state and/or by cultural norms since this country was young.
It’s almost like taking a pure and well-intended origin of “pre-woke” (proper classically liners and socially progressive) philosophy, filters out the bullshit, lip-service, and authoritarian implementation of “new rules for everyone” and instead delivers a *truly* free and open opportunity for everyone. In a way that no culture or social group or government, no matter how well-meaning, could manage to provide. How the fuck can an “always on” or “kill switch enabled” VPN just turn off without warning - like the application just closes and vpn shuts off - and yet there is no notification provided whatsoever to the user??
I’ve encountered this on mobile and desktop. Mullvad and Nord. Not even while doing anything particularly sensitive, but I try to have really good privacy hygiene, so when this happens it is extremely frustrating.
Especially at 3am when I’m tired and wondering what I did wrong (even though I’m pretty sure I didn’t).
Does this “just happen”? Double check VPN is active every time you pick up the device? Grumble grumble feeling rugged grumble

When you download an app from the Apple App Store, how much data (simply by downloading) can the developer see?
Just a randomized unique identifier? Apple ID and email address? Device details, etc.?

Do you have Orbot downloaded as its own app, or does Amethyst have a built-in version?
If the former, you should be able to run Orbot as a “vpn” for the phone and all of your amethyst traffic would presumably run through that, without even needing to touch the Amethyst settings.

Noob-ish question; I’m finding mixed answers on the web…
The wallet in Bitcoin Core is self explanatory, but [how] can you remote-connect BlueWallet (on-chain) wallet on iOS to a Core pruned node running on an old MacBook?
A number of sources seem to suggest one also needs to run Electrum server; I may just be too new to this to fully understand the concepts yet.
But my initial picture is:
1. Download/run Bitcoin core on laptop
2. Adjust settings to allow external connections
3. Tell wallet (e.g. Blue, Sparrow, etc.) the IP address/port and credentials of laptop node
4. That’s it ✅
Is this right? Even close?
If so, where does one find the info in step 3 to plug into your wallet?

Do you mean that the OP decides which replies under their note are spam?
It sounds like a good way to decentralize the decisions, and to limit abuse of censorship by making it cumbersome to block all of someone’s notes (and even then you can only censor them on your own threads).
There is still the option for someone to abuse it - in a way: if someone that the OP dislikes leaves a reply, or perhaps multiple replies are calling out the OP for scamming, for example, it gives the author of a thread a sort of immunity from criticism (or at least a way to suppress it). And while others could always post *about* the original “malicious” (or w/ev) post, it wouldn’t have the same effect and you’d lose the natural balance of human organization to call out various forms of bad/antisocial behavior. (Of course this cuts both ways — on one end of the spectrum, it’s “canceling” someone, and on the other it’s the power to unilaterally silence one’s critics).
Another potential is that it’s also cumbersome to manage situations with high volumes of spam/scam, in that it would require each user to police the replies under any/all of their own notes and that just seems like a lot of effort. And for the users who don’t bother, then I can imagine scenarios where a thread becomes unusable for anyone who’s actually trying to engage with it.
Still, it’s a thoughtful approach and I can imagine potential for an OP to at least give some indication that there’s spam in the replies. I envision a future where the “web of trust” concept takes these various approaches in concert and applies weight in an intelligent way. Maybe

Lyn, this made my day! Well-written review and the tie-in to Nostr’s value around recommendations from one’s social graph is insightful. My brain tends to find a connection to Nostr in nearly everything these days, as has long been the case with Bitcoin.
There’s something about these two protocols that inspire continual associations with (seemingly) unrelated day-to-day topics; I know I’m far from being the only one for whom this is true. I’d argue that means we’re on to something here…

The incentives aren’t broken, and it makes the protocol actually usable.
Users, developers, clients, all of us - we aren’t incentivized (by ads, engagement, revenue) to post or amplify the trash content that makes people angry and scared and divided on every social media platform.
The incentives on nostr are zaps and bloom-vibes for posting quality content. It’s pretty simple.
And all of this social content gives nostr the momentum to bootstrap the Other Stuff, so it’s the case that 1) the present experience is dramatically better than any alternative, and 2) the future is extremely bright, fascinating, wide-open, and full of potential.

Who said self-custodial Lightning is not viable?
Viable for what purpose in particular?
“The only hope” is a bit of a general/sweeping statement, which I tend to try and avoid. (I still make such statements, of course).
But in general, at least right now — assuming we’re referring to the goal of Bitcoin sovereignty for a global population (which I think is usually the underlying question here) — I’m of the mind that we don’t have the “solution” yet, if there is to be one primary, all-encompassing solution, which also may not be the case.
But Lightning, ARK, eCash, sidechains - it’s all pretty cool and interesting and new and cutting edge. Perhaps none of them are “the” solution. If there is *one* solution, it probably hasn’t been invented yet!
And just like the way that Bitcoin was discovered/created after decades of experimentation with other projects that solved different parts of the problem, I would expect that bringing self-custody sats to the masses will require the synthesis of various projects into something that checks all the boxes.
Also worth noting: Bitcoin successfully dis-intermediates central banks, and offers global citizens a currency with a monetary policy that can’t be fucked with by those banks or governments.
That is a HUGE gift to humanity.
If (and when) an era of digital free banking, using eCash or Lightning or something new, is then built on top of a Bitcoin standard, it will be a massive improvement to the lives of all people. The “best” banks can publish verifiable proof-of-reserve. Or they can offer a transparent, fuckery-free fractional reserve model to those clients who wish to take on a bit more risk, in exchange for some interest (rewards), while other citizens will choose a simple and transparent custody model where they pay a small amount of fees (instead of being paid interest) to have a responsible third party protect their wealth. Humans - many humans - want this, and always will. The market will deliver it.
And for those of us who *don’t* want to rely on any third party for this service? Well, now, we finally have the tools and the means to do it the way we want to.
Freedom = (choice x privacy x autonomy) + confidence that the other factors will not be encroached upon
Or something like that.

Noticing a lot more offers on RoboSats in exchange for Monero lately, both from buyers and sellers.
That’s an interesting development — other than the occasional stablecoin, you almost never see offers for any “crypto” on RoboSats, which is obviously good (no shitcoins 🚫).
An increase in Monero suggests a growing demand for cryptographically-securefinancial privacy… especially in the wake of the Samourai shutdown, and the continuous, creeping advancements of corporate- and government-instigated surveillance and control.
To be honest, I’m glad to see those Monero offers. Onward ⚡️🫡
