From the Unity 7 announcement: "If your studio has committed to keeping AI out of your creative work—you're not on the sidelines of this release".
This is quite disingenuous. From what I've been made aware of Unity internally is going super hard on AI in developing the engine itself - with things like explicitly making devs include how they're using AI in their personal development goals.
If you're truly committed to keeping AI "out of your creative work", I think you'd want to know that.

I'm fascinated by Discord discourse because I think a lot of folks just aren't getting it
Back in the day:
Forums provided slow, searchable, referencable, detailed and categorised async comms, largely publicly, nurtured by admins and mods
IRC provided fast, synchronous, minimal and mostly ephemeral comms, largely privately and nurtured by admins and mods.
TS/Vent provided instant, completely ephemeral and private comms, usually gated by IRC access.
Think about what Discord provides.

2026-02-09 22:58:06 UTC

Time for a #discord alternatives thread, for no particular reason.
I've actually been looking into all available options for the past few weeks for other reasons, so here's a thread to share what I've found.
In particular I'm looking for stuff with:
* Data sovereignty
* Strong moderation tools
* Wide platform support
Hopefully this gives everyone else some ideas too, and feel free to chime in with corrections, suggestions or anything else!

@nprofile…ml9f the most frustrating thing is that I think if they'd done this whole thing with the focus on making the internet better and more open and just kept the AI part as a small component of that, emphasising not jumping on the band wagon and pushing for fair use, then this would be taken better.
Instead it's entirely about AI, hyping it up and saying how it's great and is in everything. No it's not and no it's not. Go home.

@nprofile…valu oh not at all, but it does bring a good point... Were dealing with half spin increments but the charge is 1/3 vs. 2/3 which seems imbalanced. Given the "down" is the one lacking in charge it would seem to indicate some kind of first principles argument for the origin of "double down" in the vernacular

2026-01-26 17:07:27 UTC

Alright, time to move away from Firefox.
Anyone have recommendations of stuff they've been using for a while that has good options for Android cross compatibility? Ideally the browser is on both, but using a 3rd party to sync some stuff is fine by me.

@nprofile…dfpj for me the input lag that you still get feels so weird, so I can't use it to revive anything that's below 30. It makes 60+ stuff feel smooth as butter though and that's nice.

@nprofile…dfpj I'm not sure "source" is a good word here given it's an incredibly common abbreviation for "source code". You'd have two meanings that are ambigiuous even in context.
Struggling to come up with anything unambigious...
Library - Already a different software concept
App Store - Implies shopping rather than storage
Is repo a hard thing to teach? I feel like specificity is often more important than simplicity when learning.
Hopefully there's a word that's simple *and* specific!

Sorry folks but if you're proudly posting generated slop from prompts then I've got some advice - focus on the art of writing itself.
If it's generated images - how about you work on articulating things so well that the reader's imagination is the canvas? If it's generated music for your lyrics, why not just write poetry?
Why taint the deeply human connection I could have with you by slathering on a layer of slop.

@nprofile…fnpd yeah I read ya. Tbh what I'd say is that Linux is an OS that thrives on your investment- it's there to be explored, tinkered with and understood. That comes with additional mental overhead, which if you're like me is not only worth it but actually largely the point. Like how understanding how a car engine is put together and tuning it to their preference is a joy for some, while others would prefer to just treat it like a black box and only want it to get them from A to B.

For the love of god can we stop anthropomorphising LLMs. No, ChatGPT did not "come up with an excuse" or "think about its mistakes". Gemini did not "lie about its reasoning" or "struggle to understand basic concepts". Grok didn't "decide to praise Nazis" or "express it's support for genocide".
They're mimics designed cynically to trick you into assigning them a humanity that they'll never have, and giving them false agency allows their designers and creators an innocence they don't deserve.

They're tools specifically designed to produce output that convinces you it is exactly what it was asked to be. It's fooling tech giants and they're using it to fool you.
