Why Johnny still can't read.
https://www.apmreports.org/episode/2019/08/22/whats-wrong-how-schools-teach-reading
Given the original book examining that question was published in 1955 my guess is because Johnny 78 and can't remember where he left his glasses.
But back in the Eisenhower years little Johnny couldn't read because teachers weren't teaching phonics, the relationship between written letters and spoken sounds.
Back in the core of the boomer years the trend was to jump too quickly from phonics to sight reading, recognising an entire word and its pronunciation from memory. If you were already a strong reader you were likely fine with this; if you were at all behind you would be left struggling.
Fast-forward a few decades and we find new generations of children who still can't read because they have been trapped by the once new trendy pedagogies. Molly Woodworth was a poor reader as a child and came up with tricks to help make it through lessons, though the tricks never worked terribly well.
When she looked at the reading lessons for her daughter Claire, she was horrified to discover that the tricks she created for herself, the same ones that didn't work for her, were being taught as standard practice.
>A couple of years ago, Woodworth was volunteering in Claire's kindergarten classroom. The class was reading a book together and the teacher was telling the children to practice the strategies that good readers use.
>The teacher said, "If you don't know the word, just look at this picture up here," Woodworth recalled. "There was a fox and a bear in the picture. And the word was bear, and she said, 'Look at the first letter. It's a "b." Is it fox or bear?'"
>Woodworth was stunned. "I thought, 'Oh my God, those are my strategies.' Those are the things I taught myself to look like a good reader, not the things that good readers do," she said. "These kids were being taught my dirty little secrets."
Why are teachers deliberately sabotaging reading skills?
Enter Ken Goodman.
>The theory is known as "three cueing." The name comes from the notion that readers use three different kinds of information - or "cues" - to identify words as they are reading.
>The theory was first proposed in 1967, when an education professor named Ken Goodman presented a paper at the annual meeting of the American Educational Research Association in New York City.
>In the paper, Goodman rejected the idea that reading is a precise process that involves exact or detailed perception of letters or words.
Goodman still believed that when this article was written in 2019, the author requested and was granted an interview.
The problem is, Goodman was proven wrong fifty years ago:
>So, in 1975, Stanovich and a fellow graduate student set out to test the idea in their lab. They recruited readers of various ages and abilities and gave them a series of word-reading tasks. Their hypothesis was that skilled readers rely more on contextual cues to recognize words than poor readers, who probably weren't as good at using context.
>They couldn't have been more wrong.
>"To our surprise, all of our research results pointed in the opposite direction," Stanovich wrote. "It was the poorer readers, not the more skilled readers, who were more reliant on context to facilitate word recognition."
Or to put it another way:
>Goldberg realized lots of her students couldn't actually read the words in their books; instead, they were memorizing sentence patterns and using the pictures to guess. One little boy exclaimed, "I can read this book with my eyes shut!"
>"Oh no," Goldberg thought. "That is not reading."
Why did Goodman still believe in his failed ideas after all this time? (At the time the article was written, he was 91 and had just published a new edition of his book.)
Put as politely as possible, he is an idiotic kike:
>"Word recognition is a preoccupation," he said. "I don't teach word recognition. I teach people to make sense of language. And learning the words is incidental to that."
No, he really meant that:
>I pressed him on this. First of all, a pony isn't the same thing as a horse. Second, don't you want to make sure that when a child is learning to read, he understands that /p//o//n//y/ says "pony"?
>And different letters say "horse"?
He dismissed my question.
>"The purpose is not to learn words," he said. "The purpose is to make sense."
Like a true jew he tripled down minutes later:
>In his view, three cueing is perfectly valid, drawn from a different kind of evidence than what scientists collect in their labs.
"My science is different," Goodman said.
And why is fashionable nonsense so entrenched in education?
Lots of reasons, one primary reason, is because jews want you to learn this way. It is actually how hebrew is taught.

As an experiment, researchers at Anthropic gave an AI the task of running a small business. The results were catastrophic.
https://techcrunch.com/2025/06/28/anthropics-claude-ai-became-a-terrible-business-owner-in-experiment-that-got-weird/
Given the task of selling snacks and drinks to Anthropic staff - on a purely imaginary basis - it was quickly persuaded to give steep employee discounts despite employees being its only customers. It tried to sell products that it knew were already available in the staff break room for free, and then went all-in on selling refrigerated tungsten cubes.
It hallucinated that it was a human with a physical body, and contacted security telling them how to identify its imaginary physical body. Then it hallucinated that it attended a meeting where it was told to pretend that it had a physical body.

OpenAI warns that China will take the lead in stochastic garbage generators, colloquially called "AI", if they are not allowed free reign to ingest all copyrighted data regardless of the wishes of the rights holders, which curiously is not as one-sided and self-serving as it might seem at first glance.
https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2025/03/openai-urges-trump-either-settle-ai-copyright-debate-or-lose-ai-race-to-china/
Copyright law prevents you from making copies of protected works. It doesn't prevent you from reading them or learning from them. It doesn't mean you can't cite them, use facts from them, remake the ideas from them.
Anyone who has reached Uni will know this. That's the whole point of books, after all.
There are particularly egregious cases such as when Meta torrented 82TB of books and then not having the manners to seed afterwards. Strictly speaking, if you paid for the books, or borrowed them from a source that did, and you don't reproduce copies, you are complying with copyright law.
https://www.tomshardware.com/tech-industry/artificial-intelligence/meta-staff-torrented-nearly-82tb-of-pirated-books-for-ai-training-court-records-reveal-copyright-violations
What OpenAI is asking for is federal clarification of what the law is due to a flood of varying state laws and district court decisions currently all differing views on the question.
The Ars commentariat helpfully clarifies this issue by being so stridently and consistently wrong about everything.

He didn't even write the Scofield reference bible. That was written by John Nelson Darby who founded the Plymouth Brethren and Exclusive brethren with the belief that the Old Testament covenant was still in effect based on a dream a 5 year old girl had and they started worshipping Jews to close the 5th dispensation before the 6th could end and bring on the rapture or something.
Scofield just started distributing it and founded the yank megachurch concept that promoted dispensationalism and the jew worship that Americans seem to love so much.

Why AI can't spell "strawberry".
https://techcrunch.com/2024/08/27/why-ai-cant-spell-strawberry/
I've said before that what we are currently calling AI models, which is really just Large Language Models or LLMs, don't understand anything at all except language. They're language models. That's what they do, and it's all they do.
Except that's not quite true, because they don't understand language in any real way either.
>The failure of large language models to understand the concepts of letters and syllables is indicative of a larger truth that we often forget: These things don't have brains. They do not think like we do. They are not human, nor even particularly humanlike.
>Most LLMs are built on transformers, a kind of deep learning architecture. Transformer models break text into tokens, which can be full words, syllables, or letters, depending on the model.
>"LLMs are based on this transformer architecture, which notably is not actually reading text. What happens when you input a prompt is that it's translated into an encoding," Matthew Guzdial, an AI researcher and assistant professor at the University of Alberta, told TechCrunch. "When it sees the word 'the,' it has this one encoding of what 'the' means, but it does not know about 'T,' 'H,' 'E.'"
Typeahead with delusions of grandeur.

NASA has had to reschedule the next SpaceX flight to the ISS because the Boeing Starliner is still stuck there.
https://wccftech.com/nasa-swallows-bitter-pill-delays-spacexs-crew-mission-to-make-room-for-boeings-starliner/
Literally stuck, it would seem. A software issue means that it can't safely undock.
Boeing is working on it.
Just going to point out that the Starliner is only designed to be in orbit for 45 days and we a nearing 60. Note it can last up to 210 on minimum battery life.

Lots of juicy details from that Google antitrust ruling.
https://www.theverge.com/24214574/google-antitrust-search-apple-microsoft-bing-ruling-breakdown
Google pays device makers enormous amounts of money to direct search requests to them. 20% of Apple's profits come directly from Google.
Estimates from the two companies suggest that it would cost Apple $20 billion in development costs and $6 billion per year in operating expenses to replace Google Search with its own platform, and when Google is paying you $20 billion a year not to do that the decision is pretty simple.
The only problem is that if you are deemed to have a monopoly, which doesn't necessarily mean an absolute monopoly, this is illegal.
Exactly what will happen is still anyone's guess, but Google has few friends on either side of the political aisle. Deemed insufficiently on board with the progressive side of the kosher sandwich, the company has burned every imaginable bridge on the conservative side, many of them twice.

Facebook's new Llama 3.1 405b LLM is billed as the world's largest open-source AI model.
https://www.theregister.com/2024/07/23/meta_llama31_405b/
As a 16-bit model it requires 810GB of video RAM to run.
There's also an 8-bit version that brings that down to 405GB.
Which is still alot.

I just watched a video of a baby boomer being interviewed where she talks about how she worked as a nurse, bought a house at 23 for 65,000 just by ‘saving up’ without any support, and how she now regularly buys and sells multi million dollar properties.
God I hate them.
