This implicit class-based thinking "my language is better than yours" "my area of computing is harder than yours" "I'm doing X therefore I'm the cooler hacker", "HTML isn't a real language", "web development isn't programming", "mysql isn't a real database" was already ridiculous in 1995 and is inacceptable and devastating to the ALL of us in 2026.
And people mean it even when pretending being coy about it "it's just a joke ha ha" and it's despicable.

On the subject of looking for a new job:
I'm VERY put off by fedihire posts which go like "I want to do X (X usually being Rust) but I would EVEN do Y which I haven't done in 20 years ha ha" (Y usually being PHP or Java).
Are people actually still thinking this is a cool and acceptable attitude to belittle PHP (or Java or MySQL or..)??
This makes me so SO angry because we ARE DOING IT TO EACH OTHER. Like the software industry as a whole doesn't have enough problems already...

I've also changed my mind what I advise "beginners":
I've realized that - looking at the (partially really smart) shell usage of harnesses/LLMs - I'm back favoring the old hardcore sysadmin of olden days approach: learn the technology up and down, the applications, learn one programming language really well (maybe even still C?) but most importantly: get really really good at "shell" and you'll still beat the LLM usage of your coworkers BY FAR
with the modern addition of e.g. jq

I'm certainly at a loss how to argue for the VERY steep and thorny learning curve for "actually learning computering" and then having to be honest and say "it takes a decade"

So I've had two tiny mini micro successes with teaching to use LLMs much less in the sense of "only once instead of repeatedly" basically by teaching a mix of "automation - so useful!" and Alan Keys idea of writing more DSLs per project (which easily translates into Shell or Python scripts)
I couldn't convince any of the juniors however to really dig into shell scripting and spent the effort on learning it for real.
To them, it's like argueing that learning Latin from the ground up is useful.

imagine a different trajectory of LLMs like in support of science and with radical opt-in for all the training materials and using green data centers all the way and first have invested into local and small models and just a pinch of better critical thinking and god forbid maybe even international collaboration and just skipping repeating history...
this is a choice we didn't make and I'm sure the reason is the distinct anti-science and anti-intellectual direction countries are taking

let's assume for a second that LLMs will actually stay, get good and turn out to be really useful and that this is the beginning of a next industrial revolution..
does anybody remember what the beginning of the first one had cost us? in nature destruction, pollution, in human death and sickness not to mention war?
and then it took 50 years to fight for basic labour regulation, for not sending children to the mines and another 150 years to come almost to our senses and start cleaning this up?

set aside programming and local tasks like movie watching I've moved everything onto "web" since 1995 when I wrote letters to my landlord in HTML formatted in TABLE and printed from the browser.
I 1000% declare "the web" a) my home, b) open and c) simple and for everybody because "a website" ("homepage") is still doable by hand in 15 minutes to publish information and LINK to other information so it turns into "a web".
The web is imho one of the most versatile things we have. I'll keep it.

when the software industry is swept away and all that's left actually IS "artisanal computing" I'm going back to my user interface experiments, finally write my own window manager and do squishy circuits and *gasp* what used to be media art in the late 90ies, toy with 2D javascript and lesser known programming languages and my website will use tables to arrange things again.

I'm glad that you are here. I find the shrinking cosmos for all of us so horrible, I miss all my Internet friends and spontaneous travel dearly.
please don't go away (mentally) - I'll gladly look at a post equivalent of watching paint dry or old cardboard as long as you're all still here.
I don't have any capacity left for anything "interesting" either so I just say "look, a database!" three times a week, that'll have to do at the moment.
