@nprofile…gcle Can 100% confirm this from own experience! I've been the most productive (by far more than "10x") using my own set of tools, which have been created & refined by continuous praxis (dogfooding) and employed for hundreds of use cases over many years, and also partially followed me across different programming languages.
Unfortunately, many sectors of the software industry have succumbed to a formulaic paint-by-numbers approach to general "problem solving", which almost always exclusively relies on a handful of large frameworks, and with very little appetite remaining for any alternative approaches (maybe even more efficient and easier to maintain)... It's not just technology choices, but design processes/disciplines themselves too. Monopolies & monocultures everywhere, willingly adopted and encouraged, justified via more shallow learning curves, oversimplifications/mainstreaming, supposedly better hiring/career options and other self-selected network effects...
I noticed the software industry had already gotten into a rut ~10-15 years ago, way before the agentic vibe coding steamroller... Maybe due to overeager (and partially uninformed) adoption of design patterns, maybe due to the lack of caution understanding the impacts of introducing increasing amounts of complexity and dependencies, maybe because of the shortening attention spans caused by sprint-based work cultures (which only prioritize short-term goals) and the aforementioned unchallenged routine use of conceptual, architectural and code frameworks... Probably it's all of the above (and more)...
In short, had more industry players invested long-term into tailored tool building as part of their business, I think vibe coding would have had a lot less impact than it had so far. Defenders of LLM coding are frequently claiming the models are helping them to severely cut down on boilerplate and configuration tasks. This is unarguably a big win indeed! However, I also think the reason why so much boilerplate exists in the first place is exactly because of the points I listed above.
Using ye olde "hammer in need of nails" metaphor, so many orgs are attempting to solve all their tasks/projects via a handful of preexisting products/frameworks (and/or LLMs trained on materials which are statistically biased to produce better generated outcomes for these frameworks, a separate discussion).
The industry at large has been reduced to monolithic solutions, with layers and layers of customization via configuration piled on top. It's non-scalable & non-optimizable structurally and it's the wrong way to achieve/improve efficiency (or even proficiency) in your actual problem domains. It's also incomparable to the efficiency gains possible when designing & using a truly custom set of tools, including actually designing for bottom-up re-use & re-composition.

This mountain is the tallest peak in the Tannheimer Alps, here seen from a narrow ridge path in the north east. It was a fabulous warm day with so many mountain flowers in full bloom and clouds forming/drifting between the passes and nearby peaks, later developing into a heavy thunderstorm (thankfully only when I was already descending again...)

If people are already _commonly_ exceeding set monthly quotas/costs with just a handful of requests, you all have got much bigger problems, customers/users too (i.e. becoming deeply dependent on externally controlled & rented infrastructure from day one of your project/startup, plus slowly damaging your own cognitive abilities and a fast growing maintenance nightmare)! And this all is just the beginning... 🍿
Keeping up with other news about growing mineral, energy & supply chain shortages, the illusion that this might just be very short term, and the resulting cost bumps needed to produce and provision all the outstanding data center capacities at the heart of the above decisions (and similar ones made by Anthropic just days ago), I really don't understand where this optimism of AI boosters/users is coming from or on what planet they're living on...
genAI/agenticAI is a shoddily implemented/managed/secured technology & mentality for a computing-illiterate consumerist society, for an age of infinite resource abundance with stable climate/politics, all of which we're leaving (or have never really been in)! And that departure is partially driven/accelerated by said tech...
Instead of funneling trillions into this particular tech, we need focus/investment into methods, infrastructure, research/education, relationships, and above all, a culture focused on how to make computing magnitudes more sustainable, accessible, independent and which allows us to do generally more with less. Or, at least not with magnitudes more, just for some dubious, unspecified (and meaningless) measure of improved "productivity gains"... With almost no one ever questioning what this supposed extra productivity is even good for...

Short 35 second video summary of a kallitype test print development from last night, showing the many different color changes a print undergoes before one can actually fully check the final result. With a trained eye, you can already make a determination quite early on, but in general each of the stages has potential to throw your expectations, sometimes tones even shift in the 24h-48h after initial drying...
Btw. This print hasn't been fully cleared by purpose and the emulsion is still partially visible in the final print. I was saving time and here was only really after tweaking the overall tone & darks...

Learning about & applying algorithms and data structures for generative art/design, helping to introduce participants to a wider spectrum of techniques.
Unlike other initiatives like #genuary, #codevember, #nodevember etc., all of which are predominantly using visual/conceptual prompts, the focus of the #AlgoApril initiative is on algorithmic literacy, using technical, algorithmic prompts (of course, with some [visual] references and study materials) without further prescribing how these algorithms should be used. The only aim, goal and hope is for people to creatively engage with these techniques, breaking 'em, hacking 'em and finding interesting uses to create outcomes, which could be considered artistic. Algorithmic layering is encouraged at each turn!
In some sense, this more "bottom-up" approach to creation is maybe alien to some, but the lack of explicit aesthetic or conceptual/artistic goals has the potential to produce a much wider scope of outcomes (hopefully not only visual - audio, text and other outputs are highly encouraged!). There's also hope it could be more educational, helping people to engage with a larger repertoire of fundamental algorithmic tools and then apply & mix them in their own work/practice.
Many of the topics & algorithms selected here will have a more or less known visual representation and we encourage everyone to consciously reject these clichés and make honest attempts to find creative other solutions to visualize/sonify/represent them.

#LazyWeb question: Looking at the #Meshtastic world map[1], it seems Iran's internet/comms shutdown[2] is also including #LoRa bands, but it's hard to find conclusive information about it, though I would assume that if a govt/regime is cutting off comms, it's doing so comprehensively... Of course, there's the (unlikely) possibility for there to be zero nodes in the country to begin with... Anyone knows more?
This insight seems quite important to understand (not just for Iran) and how it potentially re-frames (or constrains) the "networking without internet" to purely non-conflict situations (e.g. being physically out of range of other networks, rather than caused by active suppression)

After He's Gone.
(Chosen for #TextureTuesday, but also as addendum for the recent #WorldDayOfGlaciers...)
"He" is referring here to the Gepatschferner (masculine in German), one of the once largest glaciers in the central Alps (and still Austria's 2nd largest), but so severely reduced by now and for at least 10 years the fastest shrinking glacier in Austria, losing up to ~120 meters (360 feet) per year!
Walking in terrain like this is an incredibly moving experience, even if visually stunning!

In short, this sounds like part of what the Semantic Web & Linked Data vision was about, also heavily based on autonomous software agents crawling, querying, extracting & re-assembling information on demand for a user. But the issue here the plan to take Google's hyper-centralized and ubiquitous rent-seeking to whole new levels, pushing for the replacement of entire websites with essentially just machine readable repos of data/asset descriptors and then generating filtered/personalized/optimized websites on the fly, obviously for a more or less mandatory fee (not partaking likely ends up in invisibility)...
It's component-driven and reactive design taken to its ice cold logical conclusion... Queue a whole new set of "industry standards" (agreements between the main AI companies), frameworks, breathless consultants and an economy for "agentic arbitration", "agentic SEO", heck even "agentic premium themes" etc. arising around this... An army of human and machine middlemen all just to mediate the biggest middleman of all! It's the on-demand, ephemeral realtime web we've always dreamed of!
Zero permanence.
Zero record/archive.
Zero accountability.
Zero shared reality.
Zero leverage.
(Ps. After 15+ years, maybe even https://schema.org will have its time of glory on the horizon as part of this all...)

As is somewhat customary, spring time is maintenance time and so this past week was again "infrastructure week" in #ThingUmbrella land, updating various tool scripts, switching to Rclone for uploading/syncing API docs, updating/pinning Prettier version & config, reformatting thousands of source files, re-uploading hundreds of MB of documentation for all current 214 projects, updating package metadata etc.
Also lots of recent updates to several packages, including some larger ones like:

Re-indexing of dictionary-based columns now re-creates the dictionary using the histogram (usage frequency) of stored values. This can result in major file size savings (I do still care about this aspect.. 😅). For example, in my PKM system (also my main dev focus at the moment), this change alone has reduced the database file size by almost 30% (containing tens of thousands of tagged items and where tags are stored in such a dictionary-based column).
The query engine now also supports result paging and sorting by an arbitrary number of columns/criteria & custom comparators (each with ascending/descending order options).

Historic Glacial Confluence
This is the site of confluence of the former glaciers Vernagtferner and Hintereisferner, two of the most (and longest) studied glaciers in the world. It is the site (at ~2200m) where several times over the past thousand years the ice of the Vernagtferner would pile up to form a massive dam, 150-200m tall, which caused a semi-temporary ice lake to form in the Rofen/Hintereis valley above (the one visible from ~7 seconds). Many times this lake would get up to 1.5km long, 400m wide and 60m deep, with a volume of up to 11 million cubic meters.
Occasionally, the immense pressure caused a sudden collapse of the ice dam and flash floods of icy water burst into the settled valleys below, causing widespread devastation in the entire Ötztal and even Inn valleys, incl. Innsbruck over 100km away...
It's because of these recurring ice lakes and floods that people have been studying these two glaciers for over 400 years and why they were instrumental in the creation of the entire field of modern glaciology.
Another thing to observe in this short video (from October last year) are the glacial striation/scratch marks visible on the rocks on the opposing side, reaching up at least 500m, and giving a good idea of the immense scale & volume these glaciers used to have when these valleys were shaped... I'm in absolute awe every time!

Linear Memory (2024)
A prototype version of my piece Linear Memory running inside a https://thi.ng/genart-api sandbox on a Motorola phone, connected to a custom early prototype Layer square screen...
The animation consists of dozens of layers of semi-random multi-scale pixel patterns, slowly scrolling in different directions, updating/rebuilding themselves, creating an endless, constantly changing tapestry of complex colorful patterns.

I was looking for these diagrams yesterday, but only just found them again... A visual overview of the toxiclibs library collection made with some of the libraries themselves, creating a nested force-directed graph from a folder structure (file system tree)...
These diagrams were created by an example exercise we developed as part of a 8-day workshop at the Victoria & Albert museum in London, March 2011...

@nprofile…6t2a Any polygon boundary was easily possible (also see T-shape in last image at the start of this thread), but depending on agent behavior params might not be able to get fully explored. Morphing between boundaries isn't easily possible, since the "collision" with the boundary and the subsequent rerouting and direction changes are quickly adding up and then lead to completely different paths taken... one way to avoid this resulting jittering would be to let old paths just disappear/fade out, but that would make a morphing boundary generally more fuzzy (depending on life span of each path/trace)...

Some _very_ early algorithm concept/pre-viz sketches/explorations for the Tron Legacy (2010) intro sequence. They informed another concept/approach in which we applied a similar algorithm to progressively trace out edges of an initially invisible and super detailed 3D city mesh. This required a lot of effort to retopologize the (huge) geometry supplied and creating a multi-res navigation graph to prioritize long/major edges over shorter ones, filter out undesired edges/directions, thereby creating a visual reveal in which the agents progressed from tracing out super low-res boxes to high-res architectural features... Eventually, both of these prototypes weren't used though, and the director & team opted for a more stripped down solution with much fewer agents/traces, created in Houdini...

Finally have been trying out https://github.com/boyter/scc for counting (unique) lines of code, comments, DRYness and complexity and getting a better and more aggregated overview of the scale of my https://thi.ng/umbrella monorepo. SCC is really much better and faster than what I've using previously (cloc) and also provides more meaningful results, including COCOMO project stats.
So selected current data points for this mega repo (incl. 214 projects and 185 example projects):
Estimated Cost to Develop (organic) $10,032,312
Estimated Schedule Effort (organic) 33.03 months
Estimated People Required (organic) 26.98
(This is equivalent of 74 years for one person and an assumed salary of $56k/year... Considering the repo in this form is only 8+ years old, that literally makes me 9.25x developer 🙃)

Today marks 19 years since the very first _public_ commit of my old #Toxiclibs code library collection, which for many years were one of the largest and most important side-projects related to Java & Processing.org.
Altogether, toxiclibs consisted of ~360 different "building blocks for computational design" and was used as teaching tool in related fields in many universities, mostly in conjunction with Processing, but also without...
The libraries covered 2D/3D geometry with dozens of shape types/conversions, procedural voxel modeling tools, meshes, NURBs, math utilities, linear algebra, color theory/modes/conversion, data visualization algorithms, waveform generators, filters, spatial audio, 2D/3D physics simulations, agents (before they were cool!), 1D/2D/3D cellular automata, reaction diffusion, diffusion-limited agreggation and a lot more...

@nprofile…6ngt Hehe... I don't really have a recipe for this, it's all just freestyling and only takes me around 15 mins to prepare (it's super easy), but I wrote it down now:
3 large ripe apples
100g soft butter
60-70g sugar
8g (1 pack) vanilla sugar
2 eggs
5ml amaretto/rum
2 tblsp milk
200g plain flour
6g baking powder
1 pinch of salt
- cut the butter into small pieces, keep it warm at 60℃ for 10 mins
- peel, decore & slice the apples into 1/12th
- mix everything but apples and flour in a mixing bowl at medium/high setting (kitchen mixer)
- after a minute, add the first egg
- wait a minute then add the 2nd egg
- after another minute slowly add flour
- keep mixing only until all the flour is bound into the dough (do not over mix!)
- scoop the dough into a 23cm (9in) baking form, pre-lined with baking paper or pre-buttered
- press the apple wedges into the dough
- in pre-heated oven bake for 40-45 mins at 200℃ at low shelf
- once the top of the cake has reach desired brownness, cover it with baking paper for the remaining time
- after around 30-35 mins brush the top with some melted butter
Depending on the apples and what kind of sweet tooth you are, you might need to use more or less sugar. We always try to keep sweetness at bay, so YMMV... 👍
I sometimes also add a handful of almond flakes, either scattered on top for the last 10 mins of baking or already mixed in the dough...

With Microslop having deprecated the Intellicode auto-completion extension in #VSCode and sooner or later forcing everyone to use cloud-based #Copilot instead, are there any other #TypeScript users who're not interested in switching to Copilot and if so what non-AI based alternatives are you seeing/using? I'm very tempted going back to using Emacs, but it's been years and I've never used TypeScript with it. Grateful for any advice or insights (not limited to Emacs only)!

I do miss it (because each time I also learned a ton of new things), and I always hoped/dreamed to be able to also run some longer in-depth sessions in nature (e.g. a creative coding/craft camp in some mountain hut), but general changes in tech/culture/outlook and my own severe imposter syndrome have put a halt to it...

@nprofile…ahu7 The way I understand it is that ammonium citrate acts as a restrainer, slowing down reduction/development and thereby causing smaller silver halides, which are then perceived as cooler tones by our eyes. Also similar reason why tartaric acid also shouldn't be more than 1.5-2%, since it then starts forming strong silver complexes which precipitate as coarser particles (aka warm/brown tones)... But again, this is just second hand knowledge from when I first learned about kallitype 10 years ago...

From what I learned (and maybe I misremember), but for acetate systems, ammonium should only be <3% to avoid shifting the pH too much and reducing Dmax, risking generally flatter contrast... will have to play around with that! @nprofile…ahu7 After some back and forth, I've settled on 6-7 mins in 18% sodium acetate (+ ~1% tartaric acid) for the past 6 weeks or so. I usually also add one or two drops of 5% ammonium dichromate to the emulsion to raise contrast. All prints are toned in a very weak 1:100 Se toner, just before final wash. But even with those things being mostly constants in my process, I'm continuously experimenting with different durations & concentrations of the processing stages, with sometimes quite unexpected results... I've started doing some test prints of my generative art pieces[1] and for those I think I'll be switching to gold toner for cooler tones.

#ReleaseSunday 🎉 Quite a few https://thi.ng/column-store updates over the past month, including further performance optimizations, more tests and documentation updates...
Just also added a small section and diagram illustrating the extensive use of bit-fields and bitmap-based indexes to optimize query processing and the stepwise narrowing of result sets in multi-term queries. Depending on column configuration and query term/operator type, individual rows often do not need to be visited/checked at all (only their bitfields are combined). But even if a traversal is necessary, the use of bitfields allows the engine to only having to check rows which have already been pre-selected by previous terms in the query. Apart from some exceptions, no interim result arrays are created. Queries are also short circuiting, i.e. terminate the moment a sub-term does not produce any results...

Related to #BoneConduction: One of the most moving art pieces and concepts I know of is (was?) the "Touched Echo" installation by Markus Kison in the center of Dresden, allowing visitors to "hear" the sounds of the British carpet-bombing air raid from February 13, 1945, when they rest their elbows on the railing near the river and hold their ears closed... Nothing is heard/felt by any bystanders nearby... Such a powerful concept and window to the past!

But on that aspect, I think the major difference is that industrial-scale stealing and commercial exploitation of this data is de facto behavior now and even encouraged by politicians everywhere (who're mostly AI boosters), which is quite the 180 degree turn from not too long ago when punishment was extreme and some people were driven to commit suicide, all because they wanted to freely share information with the public, information which had been created via public funds in the first place...

@nprofile…6ngt Hah, thanks! My eyes... 😅 This is actually an iPhone 6 image (so the original res for this image is only 2448x2448). I often don't do any explicit sharpening/unsharp-masking (only if in dispair), but I generally do rely on minor denoising and use Lanczos filtering when downscaling images for posting online (together this has somewhat of a sharpening effect).
For B&W edits, I often spend most of the time tweaking the weights of the RGBCMY primaries as well as fiddling with curves to improve contrast & clarity. Sometimes I also use actual "clarity", but only ever subtly (before it starts causing halos)...
In this above image from 2021, I sometimes also re-add weak noise (to add more grain), which when later downscaled also seems to somewhat increase overall roughness/sharpness/texture, which I quite like sometimes...

(Named after the hellish canyon section at the bottom of this most amazing valley, a section with tunnels and waterfalls which made the valley impassible during winter months (even still now) and the only way in & out is via a very narrow path along the rocks higher up...)

@nprofile…ft7j It's a numbers game and language is fluid. There're way more people by now internationally using the US spelling... I know some libraries are actually going out of their way to provide APIs with both spellings, but I'm not too sure that's a good idea...

@nprofile…ft7j Coincidentally, this was the number one change request in my old toxiclibs Java libraries, to switch from the British to the American spelling... I started with the latter, but due to Processing import issues (and living in UK) decided to switch to British, only to be quickly begged by people to please use American spelling... Naming is hard, so they say... 😅
