If you do not hold your private keys and your seed phrase securely in your own hands (metaphorically speaking), then you do NOT own Bitcoin.
What you own instead?
An IOU.
A piece of paper, or more likely a digital entry, that says someone else owes you Bitcoin.
And here’s the uncomfortable truth:
They don’t necessarily even have all of it. At least not all the time.
This is paper Bitcoin, no different in principle from paper gold or paper silver. We’re watching right now what happens in the silver market when too many people realize the metal isn’t really there and start demanding delivery. The same exact thing can happen to Bitcoin if/when a large number of people demand self-custody all at once.
Custodians, exchanges, ETFs, these are fractional systems. They rely on the assumption that most people won’t ask for the real thing at the same time.
And honestly?
Paper trading should be a sin.

Finally got a Bitcoin Knots node up and running and trying to get Electrum Rust Server up synced now. Still have LND to get running, LNBits, LNDhub, Thunderbolt, RTL, and many other things.... ugh.
Building all of this from source and getting it to run is going to have me bald before it's all said and done. lololol

Seems like stuff we know so far. Kinda cool hearing the “no taxes on deminimus amounts of Bitcoin being spent under $600” sounds really nice and would further increase adoption significantly, imho. I would be a lot more willing to spend some if I didn’t have to worry about a taxable event for every transaction I make.
And I agree on the “crypto” and “stable coin” talk. It’s ridiculous. BITCOIN 2025, not CRAPTO 2025.

I’m missing your point. And also, if a sat always buys the smallest of something you’d want to buy with its value, why does it need to be divisible? I.e. a house might always cost 1000 sats, a car might always cost 500 sats, and a piece of bubble gum might always cost 1-5 sats. Where’s the problem? Genuinely interested in your POV. The pencil pushers and computer geeks at the IRS that audit bank accounts and everything else. You’re KYC’ed, so I’m sure all your exchanges are documented in a tidy file for the IRS to see. Just seems hard to get away with it. And what happens the day they have AI process their current dataset and we all stick out like sore thumbs? Not a stretch for them to map IP addresses to some transactions that occurred a decade ago then tax you on them. Idk. Bitcoin getting codified as an asset is scary. We needed it codified as currency. That would solve everything including taxation issues. They need to just admit it’s a currency, not an asset. It was set up that way to be tax-advantageous to the government. It’s bullshit, really.

I don’t like the idea he could be a lot of the selling pressure at the tops and buying pressure at the bottoms. Accumulating more Bitcoin than we know about because he’s possibly 1.5x’ing his stack regularly. Worse yet, maybe he doesn’t have it all because he’s lost it and all the investors get burnt when it gets exposed that the Bitcoin isn’t all there. I don’t know. At the end of the day, if you have a hardware wallet and it says it generates a seed phrase one time, and one time only, you are the most custodial of custodians.
If you use an app and it says you HAVE TO WRITE IT DOWN OR YOU WILL LOSE ACCESS TO YOUR FUNDS, it is very probable you hold your keys and nobody else does.
If you can just “get started” for free but you are paying additional fees over the appropriate block transaction fees (based on mempool activity at the time) or lightning fees, to use their wallet, you are 100% custodial and if they get shut down or rug, you forfeit everything you held with the wallet. Not safe at all for more than lunch money, and if Bitcoin goes to billions or trillions, you just got rugged for thousands or millions of “today cuckbucks” in the inflated future.

Just happened across one of my first Bitcoin wallet addresses and see that over 500BTC went through it. Lost most of it to playing Satoshi Dice like a total idiot.
Before that, in 2010, I lost over 500 (good chance it was closer to 5000) BTC because I didn’t know what I had when I mined them.

What say the Nostr community about the fact that every single zap is a taxable event?
Does this not prohibit all law-abiding citizens from wanting to participate in Bitcoin?
There is the Virtual Currencies Tax Fairness Act that was introduced to the House of Representatives exempting transactions under $200, but what about RIGHT now?! Seems impossible to account for every zap and the capital gains and losses on each transaction.
How can a Nostritch stay compliant with the current rules?! This is a mess as it stands. Let’s hope the <$200 house bill passes and soon.

Yes, next step is most definitely to move to at least an SSD. Even lightning transactions move at a snails pace over it. 😂
I’d love to upgrade my main server machine to a 2-4TB NVME (the current 1TB is too small with all the stuff I have on it) and host the data folders there over a samba share and 10 gig networking to the node software server. 48 gig of memory on the host machine for the MyNode install if I move it over.
It would be a nice upgrade over the 10 gig of RAM it has allocated now. I didn’t realize it would be so IO-intense! It’s been quite a long time since I last ran a node. Blockchain was probably in the 200-300 GB range, then. Lightning was just invented a few months before that. Lightning is actually what made me run a node last time. I wanted to learn what these “bar tabs” were that they were building on top of the base layer. 😂
