Found out my friend's partner had a bat fly into them while they were sleeping and I'm taking this moment to say a PSA that if you have contact with a bat you MUST GO TO THE ER right away to get the rabies vaccine and treatments because it could save your life - if you wait until you have symptoms you will die. The shots are also way better than they used to be.

Most people don't quite know how many hours go into even the shortest videos or media edits. Most of my 10 minute cinematography lesson episodes I by and large release for free to help folks grow take 2.5-8 hours to make. Bigger ones, or if I need more crew 10-15 (rarely can manage those lol). But I also just did a 1 minute edit only for a project recently and spent 8+ hours on it.
Making stuff, even short or small stuff, can take so much time and energy to bring into existence.

I always am stuck between my strong opinion of "do nice things without telling anyone/when no one is looking" and my also strong opinion "tell people about the things you do that help people because it can inspire them, lead them, and teach folks that if other regular folks can do small kind things then they probably can too".
Anyways, if you can, keep a couple $5's on you in case you see someone asking for money, it can really make a difference, even if just for a day and is relatively easy.

They definitely don't have that time in most cases and I think studios are a lot more hesitant to allow experimentation with stuff, and it just waters down everything, sadly. The people that do get away with it though at that level I think do swing for it and I am happy to know there are people trying to still advance things at that level inspite of all the studio troubles.
I actually have not seen When Harry Met Sally and REALLY need to fix that gap! :)

*grain of salt here that I also agree that many styles are becoming more simplified (that is one reason why I encourage my viewers to lean into expression rather than realisim), and more movies use similar styles - but I take that as part of the dwindling number of films made by more and more conglomerated studios. There's less choice. And there isnt diversity in how many stories are told. But there isnt none, and the people that make them 99.9% of the time do care to make them as best they can.

And to end my soapbox talk, I just don't think it is cool to see something you dont like and say that it doesnt have a place within the language as a whole via saying the people making it are unskilled/unprofessional. It would be fair to say "I dont like how that was done","I think that could be capture/told better","that's not for me". I just think we can strive for a deeper understanding of art, creativity, and ourselves - it would serve us better as we look at media of all types.

And it is all taste, too. It is ok if things aren't for you! Or to say I like this part but I dont like that part.
But to say one particular "word" within the "language" just shouldn't be, imo, is insulting to the people who make the choices to tell the story as best they can with the resources they have and the current "language" as it is known to the audience and filmmakers.
I have PLENTY of problems with many movies across the board, but I also love most I see because each is a FEAT to make.

When I talk about that stuff I say it is better to lean into something wierd or different that you can do with your gear than you trying to replicate a hollywood look without the resources.
But it is all a form of language and each genre is its own dialect. Each artist of a filmmaking team adds their own voice.
And it sucks that sometimes that doesnt work or land or isnt told with the right visuals or just ran out of time/money to do better. But that happens on EVERY level of filmmaking.

Almost weekly I put out free videos for people making movies and videos in the $0-$30k range. Literally microscopic budgets. & I try to instill a sense of pride in the work no matter the gear used. And working with the story to bend it to the budget and equipment that they can use to tell it. And sometimes that does mean leaning into a style or look that is specific but can match the story even if it isn't exactly "perfect"
That's what matters: telling your story expressively as best you can

I have problems with HDR and filmmakers getting shorter timeframes with higher expectations that make them have to cut corners somewhere. There are many movies that are not lit like id like. But that doesn't mean the people working on them aren't pros or hard workers or people who care about their craft. And that doesn't mean there arent many filmmakers who arent pros, or arent in hollywood, that are not doing tremendous lighting and blocking work.

I dont want to seem argumentative so Im not replying, & I mean this in good faith, but it is kinda insulting to a bunch of hard working people to say you wish movies were "still lit & blocked professionally". Those are professionals whether or not you like their art/technicals. And that work is done on ever dwindling budgets, with terrible hours, in a hellacious media production era. And there ARE definitely filmmakers doing great work lighting/blocking right now inspite of the bad conditions.

additionally: I know lots of people like the shure smb7, but I am not a fan of it in general and I think it is quite expensive, especially if you end up needed a cloudlifter for better signal. Id be wary of those if you see it getting recommended a lot. But, that is just my opinion.

for the time being, try to play with the distance from your mouth some. The nt2a I used before would have a little more background noise but sound a little better when I got back from it at least a few more inches. Best of luck with the audiobook project, it sounds cool!!

that is definitely an issues and absolutely a reason I frame my gear videos differently and talk about strengths and weaknesses in various use cases. I despise "just get this it is great for everyone" as a "review" 🙄.
Don't get me wrong, the nt1 is a good mic, but yeah it might just pickup more of that freq. I have just switched my VO mic to a rode podmic which I got used and I think it sounds better and I do less work in post. (Cont)

i know "get a different mic" isn't actually super helpful, but I have a mic in the same family (nt2a) and I also thought I had a big s issue, but when I switched to a different mic it dramatically improved. Im sharing this because there might be some combined mitigation you can do with your mic (like distance), with editing, and with performance to get better results because it might not be just on how you speak.

Also, if you need some help focusing or being offline right now, I really like the Forest App that sets a timer and keeps you accountable and you make a tiny digital forest out of your successful focus periods. It works wonders for me, especially on harder days.

Also, if you see something traumatic, I say this especially as someone with hyperphantasia, a pretty well researched tip is to pretty immediately play Tetris (or any bright quick eye moment game) to help reduce PTSD/imagery flashbacks.

Fyi you as a regular person do not need to be looking at pics/vids of dead kids. If you can *imagine the idea* of a dead kid and it makes you feel bad/sick, then no extra viewing will help our world, but it can hurt you - a lot - and that threatens how you *can* show up in tangible ways to make life better for us all.

sorta related: there is an internet radio station i love that is small and plays reruns of their friday show all the way back to like 2006. The other day i was listening and found 3 songs I liked. Shazam could recognize them but they weren't avaliable anywhere. I think only 1 artist was on tidal with a different album and one artist was on bandcamp with a different album. The 3rd functionally didnt exist. If I hadn't heard the 2006 rerun Id never have heard the songs!

I can't judge *too much*, for most of my life I was convinced I was just destined to painfully lose ~2 weeks of life to being incoherently ill on the couch 2-3 times a year, every year, forever.

Here is a chart about exposure and camera settingd, but this is more for after you start getting comfortable with the settings/buttons. It is good info to know and gives insight into how they all work together.

If you like how something looks in a photo see if you can replicate it a second time.

when I was getting started. Also if you are just trying to get used to holding the camera, using the lens, getting focus, then using full auto mode is super useful so you can focus on learning those parts first.
As for focus, make sure the lens is set to "af" (auto focus) not "mf" (manual focus) - it is a little switch [it looks like that is correctly set in your photo]. If it is in "af" then you shouldnt use the focus ring to try and change focus.

I dont have any great resources off the top of my head, but as others said, reading the manual and learning what the buttons & symbols mean is a great starting place. On canons there is a little green box on the mode selection dial that is "full auto" mode. Id suggest using that and looking at the numbers that come up on the screen (sometimes you have to press "Q" to make them show up) that will give you an idea of what the camera suggests for exposure and helped me1/3
