long day. We visited a nursing home, then caught a bus to Korean groceries, picked up wine, finally got to lunch about 5pm. But we snacked on a pickled egg each along the way! Lunch was at an Indian diner, so rolled away fully sated.

Yesterday on our way to "lunch" on Beaumont Street around 4:40pm, we took the scenic route through Gregson Park. And were rewarded with cockatoos in the big Afrocarpus tree 🎉
It's a huge tree that has cones like beads, about a centimetre in diameter. Cockatoos love them. Nom nom!

Following on from the CBF picnic, we had a CBF dinner. Had some leftover mince and tofu with mushrooms and greens, sort of Korean style (lots of gochugaru) so fried an onion add beat three eggs to turn it into something like a frittata. :chefkiss:

Caught the bus to Kooroora Bay and walked across the Fennell Bay Bridge to the Lions park for a picnic today. Glorious day, nice cooling breeze off the lake.
A simple CBF picnic comprising rice in tiffins, a few jars / cans, and pickled eggs. There was meant to be lettuce too but that stayed home (DW sighs).
Saw pelicans, swans, shags, seagulls from the picnic, and a white-bellied sea eagle from the bus.
Walked back to Toronto afterwards, where we found the crowd enjoying the foreshore. Nice lazy sunny holiday vibes.

don't know. I bought from the fishmongers in Wallsend NSW, they source from either Newcastle fish coöp or Sydney fish markets.
There was a barramundi head/frame there when I got the salmon one, will have to give that one a go next time (but perhaps for a fish stew, really can't be fucked with all this stirring!)

I'm a big fan of pilafs in all their forms: pilau, pulao, plov, biryani, tehari, paella, machbous al d'jaj, chicken bog, jamabalaya… but I generally just can't be fucked making risotto; all that fucking stirring. Unless it's salmon head risotto.
Taking inspiration from Venice's risotto di gò, which I've never had and likely never will, I use a salmon head and frame in place of the gò. Salmon is an oily fish so I figure it's likely a good stand-in.
I make a stock from the head and frame, with a couple of bay leaves, half an onion, and a teaspoon of salt, enough water to cover and simmered for about 30 minutes.
I then scavenge the head and frame for good meat, which you can see from the first photo is plentiful. Just the easy stuff, I can't be fucked working for it and there's lots there.
In another pot, I make a simple soffritto from onion and diced carrot, add pepper and spices, and stir in arborio rice. Then I start adding the salmon stock, one cup at a time through a sieve, stirring until the rice has soaked it all up. I ended up adding about 5½ cups last night for 1 cup of rice. Meat then stirred through, left to rest 10 minutes.
Bloody lovely dish. A lot of work, but worth doing once a year I reckon. A bit greasy so some might not like that.

After a visit to Bibina, armed with a canned picnic and some rice I brought in our tiffins, we caught the bus to Speers Point Park. Where we discovered that they were setting up for a concert, so all of the picnic tables away from the water had a great view of either black plastic wrapping a fence, or an armada of portaloos.
Undeterred, we set up at a waterside picnic table. In a stiff breeze. Those tablecloth weights earned their keep again.
Quite the stiff breeze, I reckon about 40 km/h with gusts up to 50. A picnic with beanies on. Pouring the wine was a challenge, a little flew onto the tablecloth. DW had the same challenge with the chilli oil on the bamboo shoot pickles. Some soaking will be required to clean the tablecloth and serviettes.
So much of a challenge that we pared lunch back to butter beans in tomato sauce from Greece, smoked sprats (sardines) from Lithuania, and chilli bamboo shoot pickles from China. The rest stayed in their jars.
Worth it for the view, especially when two white-bellied sea eagles glided over, a pelican hovered in the breeze with feet dangling, and a little black shag intrepidly landed in the rough water for a feed.

Fun fact: the superhot chillies have as much heat in the inner walls as in the placentas. No taming them down, as I discovered. DW still mad at me about that meal. Never buy yellow Trinidad scorpion chillies.

Speaking of chilli, I had to rescue a bunch of small ripe habaneros and aji umba(?) from the birds, so I removed the seed bundles and placentas to reduce the heat and sliced them up for last night's chicken pilaf. Was very tasty.

she puts them through the egg slicer, maybe turning sideways to cut a second/third time (for diced). Sliced, into sandwiches. Diced, into salads. Same as hard-boiled eggs. (They are hard-boiled eggs, they just last longer because vinegar and salt)
When we have a big day out with a couple of stops, we take a pickled egg each in a little Tupperware container. Might get eaten partway along as a snack, or as part of a picnic.
Also nice to pull one out, slice in half longitudinally, and put a half yolk-side up at the top of each bowl when we have laksa.

This morning's dosa batter frothing to get onto the tava. This one is a buckwheat dosa with some mustard seeds for fun.
· 1 cup raw buckwheat groats
· 1/2 cup white rice
· 1/4 teaspoon fenugreek seeds
· 3 cups filtered water
· all soaked about 8 hours
Poured the lot into the blender, milled for a few minutes. Into a bowl:
· 1 1/2 teaspoons pickling salt (non-iodised)
· 1/2 teaspoon black mustard seeds
· contents of the blender
Mix well with a whisk, covered in cling wrap, set somewhere warm overnight. Ready to smear around a hot tava!

Random memory returned to me today:
1992, at a share house in Enmore, Sydney. Old cream coloured fridge with rounded corners. I opened the door to see a mouse looking back at me, chomping on something held in its front paws.
It scarpered. I cleaned the fridge of anything it had been at. My mate Phoenix and I pulled the fridge out and found the point of ingress / egress: some broken plastic shell on the fridge. Stuffed it with something to keep mice at bay. Set a trap.
I think somebody said something about stuff had been going missing for a bit…

when I lived on the NSW Cenny Coast, I used to like lunch at a pub at Terrigal. Loads of Harleys parked out the front, cheerful sounds within, and lambs fry (generally liver) and bacon and a beer. Ah, memories.
On the very rare occasion I buy a meat pie, it has to be steak and kidney. Lovely texture, metallic taste. Yum.

ABC has a documentary about the art fraudster Inigo Philbrick, and it's beautifully pieced together with snippets of interviews from the main characters (and there's plenty of Main Characters). Highly entertaining. Like other docos about the high dollar art dealing world it pulls back the curtain on some really shifty business, and there's none shifter than Inigo's.
It may well have been an attempt by the fraudster and his girlfriend to soften his image. But I reckon you'd have to not be paying attention for that to work. The interview cuts are perfect, playing one person's perspective against another's.
If you have an interest in true fraud stories, it's well worth the time.

A bit over a week ago, I left my hat on the bus. Tired, I got up carrying my bag and umbrella, hat left on the seat. :akko_sad:
Today, a bus driver beckoned me over and said "I've got your bloody hat! It's on another bus." We then arranged for a pickup at a bus stop near home, an hour later. 🎉
I have quite a few other hats: a straw hat, a canvas drover hat, trucker's cap, winter cap. But this is my bus hat, it's flexible cotton/polyester with mesh sides to catch the breeze, and it folds up to go in my bag when the sun drops. I've had it over a decade (maybe 18 years?)
Be kind to your bus drivers, they remember.

We recently watched the doco Emily: I Am Kam, from NITV. It's an amazing in-depth look at the life of one of Australia's greatest artists, Emily Kam Kngwarray.
Lovely to get such great coverage of her life, with her family and friends from over the years. Having seen the doco about the exhibition of her work in Japan, it was great to get more of her story.
Streaming now on SBS On Demand, however that's at 720p resolution and may be a little blurry on the beautiful artworks. We recorded off NITV ages ago, only just watched it last week. Would recommend watching out for it on NITV to get it in 1080p, as it'll no doubt come around again.

I use it how you'd use regular minced garlic. Generally sautéed after onions and chillies, before powdered spices and liquid.
I love garlic but it doesn't love me back. Fermenting means that I can keep adding it to all my cooking with reduced impact.

Another 500 grams of garlic peeled, minced in a food processor, salted with picking salt, packed into a 500ml jar for fermenting. At least that's one thing achieved today.

this century, Sydney NYE fireworks is a definite no from me.
Last century, when I was working in Circular Quay on NYE 1999, it was a short stroll to a pub in The Rocks. A few beers, some nibblies, then down the road a bit to watch the 9pm fireworks.
Then back to the pub to do the sobriety test: negotiate the stairs down to the men's loos at the Palisades hotel. If you can do that and make it back up, you can have another beer before the train home.

Due to [reasons], we missed three buses and the fourth got us to the train station as the train left. With an hour to muddle about with, we decided to poke about on Beaumont Street in Hamilton and then get dinner there. Ended up in Kimchi House of Korea for dinner.
The host is this pocket rocket of amenability and facilitation. Always a pleasure, don't know why we don't get there more often. DW requires gluten free, he quickly warned us not many items were and they were all vegetarian – which suited her fine so we continued.
Host was very careful to ensure the nibbly treats were all GF (and delicious), and instructed DW in no uncertain terms not to eat anything from my plate! No! So.
DW got a very nice kimchi and tofu dish, which I sampled (allowed) and it was very good. I got BBQ pork and it was fabulous, absolutely soaked in garlic and gochugaru (the vibrant red chilli).
Always a great meal, always well looked after. Everything proudly made in-house (well, maybe not the tofu, but all the ferments are).

Yesterday was cold and overcast with a freezing wind, so obviously we had to have a picnic at Merewether Beach.
There's picnic tables in a concrete bunker underneath the change rooms, with a view of the rolling surf and passing bulk carrier ships. Nicely sheltered, also no mobile phone signal 🎉
Simple picnic, just what's in the tiffins. Yesterday it was lamb stew with broccolli and peas on calrose rice. Lots of black pepper, some onion / garlic / cinnamon / soy sauce. Simples. 🍷 to accompany.
Walking back to the bus stop, BOM app said it was 16°C / feels like 8°C. Beanies at xmas time!

for all the prattle, we all just *know* that the most harmful and hateful in the community will not be addressed, only orgs tagged as "extremist" which will include anyone protesting against the genocide in Palestine. 😠

On this morning's walk to get groceries, I looked left at the perfect moment to see these beauties. Fantastic mushrooms, just growing happily on a not-dead tree overhanging the wetlands between Toronto and Blackalls Park.
I reckon there's enough there for six Beef Wellingtons, at least!

Watched a doco on SBS about the Isle of Rùm in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. Nice quiet away from it all place, largely a reserve now with walking tracks and hairy coos and sheep and deer.
You'd get more historical information about Rùm from its Wikipedia page, including possible sources for its name (it's complicated). The doco doesn't get into that very much. The focus is the lives and hopes of three permanent residents of the Island. A cosy little doco. Largely about how everyone needs Dave.
Dave is everywhere. So is Dave's dog, and often Dave's son. Dave does everything. Frankly, I doubt the Island would cope without Dave. The doco should have been called Needing Dave.
Something nice and calming to watch over a lunch or two.
