I spent the last two weekends hiking on the PCT from the southern end of the Indian Heaven Wilderness to the northern end of the Mount Adams Wilderness in Washington. In a week, Adams got covered in snow and then melted back off. A fitting end to backpacking season as I accomplished a goal I had started in the spring, which was to make it to Adams. Next year I need to fill in the 20+ mile gap between Adams and Knife’s Edge. Blessed to have explored so many new places this summer, great season.

I bought new tires today for my Accord. On a whim I decided to get all terrain tires for better traction on dirt and gravel roads. Somehow ended up buying all weather tires without knowing it. Bonus.

@npub1yzz…qt6q I’m extremely excited for satellite messaging on iPhone. Agree it’s a huge deal. I’ll try the topo maps but I’m skeptical it will be able to replace how I use AllTrails, at least initially.

I broke down and went to REI and bought a bear can this evening. As a concession to myself, only the smallest one, the BV425. I brought 2 days of food to test and it fits with some room to spare. Finally figured out the national park entrance pass and permit situation. Bought an annual entrance pass and booked a couple permits. Looks like I’m going to Olympic National Park this weekend!

C2C Trail Section Hike Completion
It was a magical experience to hike out of the mountains into vast wetlands with blue herons flying around and then finishing at the Pacific Ocean. On a beautiful sunny day in early February. I love how they connected abandoned forest roads to create this long trail. Want to thru hike it this summer if I can figure out some sort of shuttle situation.

Oregon’s AT: Camping Day 3
To me, the western half of the Corvallis to Coast (C2C) Trail seemed like what I hear about the Appalachian Trail (AT). Green tunnel and constantly up and down ridges. This was a pleasant surprise because one of my maps showed it being a road walk but it veered onto trail as soon as I started hiking. I saw over half of the trail and would love to thru hike someday.

Harlan Valley: Camping Day 2
Hiked from the Marys Peak area through a little town in a valley called Harlan and then back up into the mountains on a national forest road. My favorite part was a new looking short steep trail in the middle of nowhere that connects two abandoned forest roads. This trail is so well maintained, very impressed. Lots of trail signs to guide the way and avoid danger.

Marys Peak: Camping Day 1
I didn’t plan to hike 32 miles today, it just happened. Hiking sections of the Corvallis to Coast (C2C) trail this weekend. Made it from the edge of Corvallis to Marys Peak and back. I should have turned back sooner but I was halfway up the steep ascent to the peak so I had to commit. Haven’t seen anyone in the forest. So happy to be camping in December! So peaceful.

Rogers Peak Camping: Day 1
I feel rejuvenated after feeling slightly depressed that backpacking season is over (for me). I’m a fair weather backpacker. Sleeping in the Pilot was a lot warmer than in a tent. Didn’t sleep great but still getting used to it. I explored a new road and enjoyed the sun and blue sky. Legitimately warm outside, so nice. After hiking, I got brave and drove up into the mountains to a new area.

Rogers Peak Camping: Start
I’m testing out camping in my SUV this weekend in the Tillamook State Forest. Sleeping in the back with the seats folded flat. Don’t have much other than my regular backpacking gear. Plus some jugs of water, jump starter, and extra clothes in case I get soaked. Plan is to explore deeper into the forest than I’ve been able to do day hiking.

Now that backpacking season is over, I’m thinking about giving overlanding a try. I just don’t want to be in a tent in the cold and rain.
Plan is to start with my backpacking gear and go from there. Have a 2013 Honda Pilot. I can use it as a base camp for long day hikes.
Main concern is being stuck in the middle of the forest with a dead battery. Ordered a NOCO Boost Plus battery jump starter. Will get a couple storage bins to hold gear staying in the SUV.
Reasonable?

Oh wow am I struggling this morning. My stomach has hurt real bad for 6 hours. I’m in the three sisters wilderness. I took some acid reducer and other stomach medicine. It’s hard to drink water but i’m forcing myself since i’m mildly dehydrated. No way I could eat. I think climbing south sister is out, not sure if I can complete the loop at this point. Probably going to make camp in 4 miles and try to sleep it off. I have limited resources on me but would appreciate any suggestions.

Benson Plateau Backpacking: Wrap
Woke up at the abandoned Indian Springs campground with more condensation on my tent than I’ve ever experienced. Completely soaked. I wanted sun but lesson learned not to set up camp without tree cover. Headed back on the Eagle Creek Trail to most likely see the waterfalls for the last time this year. I just love Twister Falls, third photo. 😍

Benson Plateau Backpacking: Day 2
I started out the day not feeling great about my trip because of terrible weather the day prior. After the sun came out things improved quickly. I was on Chinidere Mountain for sunrise. Had incredible mountain views on Tomlike Mountain, including Mount Adams. Then I saw some awesome views of Wahtum Lake I hadn’t seen before. Great day.

Benson Plateau Backpacking: Day 1
One might wonder why anyone would go to the Benson Plateau. First reason, I need to fill in a tiny section of the Pacific Crest Trail to have the Columbia River to Timothy Lake completed. Second, I’ve not been up here since my very first backpacking trip 20+ years ago. Fall has arrived. Tomorrow the weather should improve so I will explore some mountains.

Enchantments Backpacking: Day 2
I’ve decided I’m not afraid of heights, just exposure to falling. A couple times I was terrified traversing rocky ledges. So much easier in the dark. That said, I really enjoyed the Enchantments. Unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Autumn has definitely arrived. It snowed on the peaks Saturday evening. Want to go back in warmer weather.

Enchantments Backpacking: Day 1
Big if, but if this trip marks the end of backpacking season, I’m satisfied. After setting up my tent at Upper Snow Lake, I couldn’t resist the steep climb up to Lake Viviane to get a glimpse of the Core Enchantments. Incredible! I had psyched myself up for this trip but it’s much better. Spending tomorrow in the core. So excited!

Mount Jefferson Backpacking: Wrap
Here are some more photos. Woke up Sunday morning to the smell of smoke, which is concerning when you don’t have internet and don’t know if it is from far away or a new fire nearby. I really enjoyed my adventure exploring off-trail, I can’t wait to do some more. May be able to do that in the Enchantments this coming weekend, if rain and smoke hold off a bit more. 🤞🏼

Mount Jefferson Backpacking: Day 2
Stayed off the mountain and explored Jefferson Park today. Visited Park and Rock Lakes, which I hadn’t been to. Also Scout, Russell, and Bays Lakes. This is a permit area. You pretty much can’t camp here or at any of the major lakes in Jefferson Wilderness and not have a ranger check your permit. They’re easy to get. This park full of alpine meadows. It’s so special.

Mount Jefferson Backpacking: Day 1
I made it up to 8,300 feet on Mountain Jefferson, which is the highest I’ve been standing on Earth. A little challenging but I had a great time and the views were beautiful. Camped near Shale Lake and explored the area. Very quiet here because most thru hikers are in Washington or California. Have only seen 3 people and they were all headed up Jefferson.

I made it as far as I feel comfortable going alone with no experience mountain climbing. 8,300 feet. More photos of my trip tomorrow afternoon most likely. Heading back down.

@npub1xgj…qmqm Definitely, Not going to attempt a full summit. Conditions on the PCT vary. Most is dirt single track but it can be rocky or rooty in places and it does get gnarly and dangerous in spots. I wear boots but thru hikers commonly use trail runners. This trail up the mountain probably isn’t much of an actual trail but I have the GPS track.

@npub1hdk…26hc That’s definitely ultralight! Lately, my inflatable has lost most of the air by morning so i’m basically sleeping on my Z-lite at this point. I guess that’s one way to get used to using a thinner pad.

I figured you might have some pushback on my comment. :) I agree there are legitimate news outlets. I guess I shouldn’t treat TV entertainment as news.

@npub1zc6…ux0z I won’t use those flimsy UL tents either. I would rather have extra weight than condensation in my tent. I don’t bring a stove at all, just eat food that doesn’t need to be heated up, mainly because i’m too lazy. It’s certainly not healthy food but when you’re hiking 20 miles a day… 🤣

Lost Lake PCT Backpacking: Wrap
Sometimes I start a trip with low expectations, but the Pacific Northwest always delivers! I’m low key in love with this lake. There’s something special about a lake with a volcano towering over it. 🤣 I thought about renting a stand-up paddle board for an hour but I needed a nap instead. I want to try paddle boarding, and canoeing, sometime and this lake seems perfect.

@npub1zc6…ux0z Sorry yes, I sometimes clarify if I have room. Pacific Crest Trail. So everyone knows, it’s around 2,650 miles and goes from Mexico to Canada along the western United States through California, Oregon, and Washington State. I’m not ultralight but I use a reasonable setup that would work for thru hiking. I only brought one day of food other than the sandwich, chips, donut, and cookies I packed in for last night, so my pack is pretty light today. 😄

Lost Lake PCT Backpacking: Day 2
Here’s a preview of what we’ve got going on today. Finished my PCT section and it was about 8 miles. Nothing to report there. Lost Lake is gorgeous and would be a great family car camping spot. I’m currently up on Lost Lake Butte with an amazing view of Mount Hood. Going to go back down and find a free spot to stealth camp at the lake. There’s a spot up here but no water.

Lost Lake PCT Backpacking: Day 1
I’m filling in a little missing section of the Pacific Crest Trail between Lolo Pass and somewhere north of Lost Lake near Mount Hood this weekend. Will be exploring the area around the lake after completing the section Saturday morning. I saw my now good friend Prospector again, who’s hiking SOBO (south bound) on the PCT. Had met him weeks ago in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness.

@npub1cqh…4rf7 Makes sense. That site has a lot of good info but I’ve noticed it seems to lack important details. I wanted to go to Steheken so bad! I need to find a route that includes a trip to the bakery. Pretty sure, I didn’t make it to Suiattle pass either. I saw signs for Buck Creek and Middle (Ridge?) pass along the Buck Creek trail but do you know if the last pass before it descends down to the PCT has a name?

@npub1cqh…4rf7 Sounds like a cool lake. I turned around at the first “slide where the trail has been swept away.” Is that distance not from the road/trailhead?

@npub1cqh…4rf7 AllTrails doesn’t have distance for that trail but looks about 3 miles north, probably 5 by trail. The trail got rough and brushy as I descended down and it didn’t seem like a good idea to continue. Plus, I would have missed the bear if I hadn’t turned around. I was having a very hard time with direction up there. I kept thinking north was south. Supposedly staffed but no one in there when I visited. Maybe I need to camp at Canyon lake next time to face my fears! 😂

@npub1tre…x5pn I don’t think we have a lot of black bears in Oregon. I never even see bear sign. Only place i’ve seen them is on the Rogue River trail. I did inch closer to the bear to get a photo vs inching away. 🤣 He’s so cute, must be harmless right?

Glacier Peak Backpacking: Day 2
The highlight of today was seeing my first bear in two decades. He was rummaging around a meadow next to the backpackers camp at Image Lake. Explored some unmaintained trails above Image Lake. Headed down toward Canyon Lake but turned around when I realized there was no one around for miles. Visited the Miners Ridge Lookout Tower.

@npub1cqh…4rf7 @npub1hdk…26hc No good! I talked to a guy at Cloudy pass who had been out there since last Monday and it sounded like he had a few days of rain. And a PCT section hiker doing Steven’s to Rainy pass was losing his voice from the smoke south of me. Sounds like they are about to close the PCT down there.
