Most people don’t care about protecting their money from the government. That’s why they flock to FDIC insured accounts. My grandma isn’t going to self custody her bitcoin. She’s far more likely to lose her keys than the government 6102ing her coins. Far more bitcoin has been lost to people screwing up self custody than intervention on legitimate use. We need to stop telling people they’re stupid, and work on custodial solutions if we want this to scale and integrate into society.

Nostr needs a plan to solve the cold start problem prior to being stripped of our 1st amendment. Until then, it’s competing against X, which has a much larger network.
To that end, we need to find a way to cater to the hard side of the network, the content creators. What do they need? What do they not like about X? The nostr community needs to figure that out and solve for it.

Thanks for sharing. I have definitely tended to “undershoot” when it comes to these types of social interactions. The risk of overstepping seems so high, but the reality is there’s far more risk to not engaging. The number of amazing people that have walked in and out of our lives without us ever being vulnerable enough to know them is staggering. With money supply growing at 7% per year, low fixed interest rate debt is the smartest move you can make, as long as you use it to buy scarce assets and don’t over-leverage. It’s a tool. I use debt all the time in investing, and it keeps me liquid because I don’t spend all my good money (bitcoin) on new assets. I can use shitty borrowed fiat that debases faster than the interest payment. Make the banks pay us some of that back after decades of robbing us blind.

We had difficulty fielding an Army during WW2 due to an underweight population. Incentives were aligned to production techniques that could achieve economies of scale, leading to commercialized farming, shelf stable products, etc. In that environment, it made sense. Bad food was better than a starving population. Caloric deficits are a far more common problem throughout history than surpluses. Most people alive today have never seen or experienced that, so it’s easy to look past. Now, food quality poses a higher risk than caloric deficit, so it makes sense to rethink those practices. This time, I think it is more a case that the environment has completely changed rather than an evil plan. And never forget, in a zombie apocalypse, the country with the most Twinkie’s wins.

The SBR is happening whether any of us like it or not. We can’t create a free system and then expect the government to come in and do the right thing. Relying on them to burn the bitcoin or create laws to not seize it only creates a temporary and local solution. We shouldn’t be asking the government to do this because that creates a perverse incentive to the devs to create technology that nests within that framework. What happens when the government doesn’t want to play by their own rules? We have to build technology that resists this no matter who is in charge.
The government will likely keep the seized BTC, and we should use it as an incentive to innovate and create a protocol with the fitness to withstand future seizures. Adopting a free monetary system meant giving up the consumer protection that the government currently provides, there were bound to be casualties. This is way bigger than bitfinex and the Silk Road, the long game is what matters.
Don’t get me wrong, if they return the coins to the rightful owners, that would be great, as long as we operate as if they didn’t. I don’t think returning the coins now would mean anything at all to future regimes that want to steal it. I get wanting to go along when the government aligns with our interests, but there’s always the next election. We can’t get complacent.
