In 1966, Joe Piette was drafted and sent to Vietnam to fight for the U.S. He soon came to believe that he was on the wrong side, bought a camera and began to document what he saw. For the ensuing 50 years, he's been an activist photographer, present at demonstrations in Sudan and Congo, at worker strikes and anti-ICE rallies. The Temple News, a paper for Temple University, talked to him about his life and work ahead of an exhibition at TILT Institute, Philadelphia.

35 years ago, Jim Sanborn presented the cryptographic sculpture Kryptos to the Central Intelligence Agency in Langley, Virginia. Made from copper, granite, quartz and petrified wood, it has four sections, each of which holds a message in code. Over the years, three of the sections have been solved — by CIA code breakers, a California computer scientist, and the National Security Agency. Now, 79-year-old Sanborn says he's going to auction off the solution to the final message, with the company arranging the sale estimating a winning bid between $300,000 and $500,000. Kim Kardashian faced swift backlash after posting on Instagram about her Tesla-festooned photoshoot for indie fashion mag Perfect. The top comment on her post, with over 20,000 likes, said "never buying skims again," referring to Kardashian's shapewear brand. Artnet's critic Ben Davis looks at whether the Tesla and Kardashian backlash is a distraction, or will it have a real impact. "Social media rage is fleeting and impressionable and not to be taken too seriously," he writes. A Canadian artist has canceled his show, "Since 1957," which was due to open on May 2 in New York, over President Trump's annexation threats. "The United States is no longer a country that Canadians can trust, and I feel it would be unpleasant and wrong to mount a show in the U.S. at this time," Toronto-based Alan Belcher wrote on Facebook. Charles "Teenie" Harris worked for 40 years as a photojournalist for the Pittsburgh Courier, one of the nation's leading Black newspapers. During that time, he took at least 75,000 images that, says @nprofile…uxpd, "beautifully and poetically paints a picture of Black life in mid-20th-century America."
