Big fan of #Utaite (particularly doing covers of #Vocaloid music,) games, and technology. np. USB 1.1 and 2.0 are pretty simple to deal with. Really even 3.x isn't so bad — just some extra pins. They kept stuff simple for a reason.
Just make sure to get the power and ground pins right, lol. The pinout in the picture is with it facing you, not away from you.

That's correct. The reader will be one side and the USB port the other. There should be no connection on the port (provided you don't plug anything in) so you should be able to figure out which the reader is from the multimeter in a split second I would imagine. Or, conversely, you could test to the USB port to eliminate which one not to use.
Obviously the port wouldn't work with this (unless you do two connectors, but that seems pointless.)

Am I misunderstanding something? Wouldn't you just simply get a type-A connector and run the appropriate lines over? The only hard part I guess is figuring out which side it uses. (I imagine a simple multimeter could answer that though. Otherwise good old trial and error since there are only two sides gives you a 50% chance to get it right on the first try.)

When I did a search for mednafen in my package manager I also saw mednaffe as a frontend and went ahead and installed it. Guess I might need it then. I wish there was a flatpak, but I can't seem to find one via flatpak's nearly worthless search function and Flathub's website is borked right now. (I've never seen it go down before, wow.)
EDIT: Finally got it to load. If I understand correctly, mednaffe on Flathub (com.github.AmatCoder.mednaffe) includes mednafen. Unfortunately I can't actually test it right now.

Huh. I was under the impression that there was some sort of issue with Mednafen for Saturn. Or just with it in general. But now I can't remember what I might have read saying any such thing. 🤷 I'll give it a look I guess.
Sadly I can't afford a real Saturn. I'd absolutely prefer that if I at all could.

Oh yeah, absolutely. I've compared a lot about the two and 2D is amazing on the Saturn. But it sure falls flat at 3D.
That said, a few games that mix stuff did better on the Saturn. The best example being Grandia. On the Playstation the battle screen with its 2D sprites placed on a 3D background is very jerky and wobbly to a point that one could almost get nausea (I imagine many people do?)
I've also been looking at stuff that was translated, but I haven't found a whole lot.
Biggest problem I'm seeing is emulation is still a hot mess even after all this time. :Yikes:

I still can't decide how I feel about having missed out on the Saturn. It was an intriguing system, but definitely had a lot of limitations. Some stuff on it was really really good, but it was kind of a case of a few really amazing things a few neutral or bad and not much else versus many really good things, a few amazing, and a whole lot of neutral or bad on the Playstation. I always kind of wanted a Saturn, but it just never happened and looking back on it I think I would have been a lot less happy and missed out on a lot.
Of course, in an ideal world I would have had both. 😆
One of these days I'm going to sit down with emulation and really work through some of the stuff I missed out on back then.

I think I ran Windows 98SE still well into something crazy like 2005 or something. 😆 When XP came around it was great, but so high on resource usage! (It feels so weird to say that today since XP is about a billion times more efficient than 10 which in turn was probably about a billion times more efficient than 11. And really, if you turned off extras like themes, XP was barely more than 2000.)

Simon's Quest really was something special in its time. It's sad that so many didn't properly appreciate it and sadder still that it had a bed rep for so long thanks to bad publicity (Angry Videogame Nerd.) It was anything but perfect of course. Especially figuring out the secret at that cliff with the none-too-intuitive clues given. Translation issue abounded apparently. It seems the original text was a lot clearer on some things that caused enormous confusion in the translation.
Despite all this it was just such an epic adventure. It and Metroid were pretty much the official originators of the "metroidvania" term (Castlevania 1 was linear without items/abilities to progress after all.) It really did do something relatively newish for its time in good ways.

That is honestly very impressive. I feel like they must have had to use a ruler very very carefully down to the millimeter on some of this. The evenness of the pattern at the top and the ruffles on the couch in particular is just insane.
It's like someone got in a time machine and told them how software drawing would be like someday and they decided to emulate it.
They even got the idea of a limited palette and using dithering/etc tricks to appear less limited.

I always felt like the PC games were still best on the PC. Especially in those days. Even the one I'd had the highest hopes for being fun on console (Morrowind) ended up being kind of blech on the Xbox. (Lots of slowdowns and such. But as a side note, if you had a CFW you could actually get quite a few mods to work on it at least, which was kind of cool. I don't think I've seen that again until Skyrim on the Switch and even it has to deal with a different texture format on any mods that use textures.)

I don't know. I've heard the difference on some of the things where it was possible and honestly, I'd say there is a *LOT* to be said for having the dynamics.
The real, true issue here is you do all that to gain access to what *should* be available as the baseline. They just shouldn't be compressing the dynamics in the first place. You shouldn't have to pay all that just to get the original full dynamics...
Of course, part of the issue there is most people don't know that that is the true difference between the two, so they're paying for all that super equipment to get diminishing returns and really it's the baseline itself that is the issue.
There is literally no reason the CD version should not sound just as good or better than the record. Companies just ruined it.

Well, CDs can be better. What's wrecking them is the freaking "loudness war" as they call it. That's the thing that makes records tend to be better: they're not fully immune to the loudness war, but they're darned close to it since compressing the dynamics makes it hard to actually fit the full thing on a record, thus records are generally made without that.
Which means the real issue is the loudness war and I really wish people could do something about it.
I have a bit of a sensitivity to the scratching sound (or whatever I should call it) that records make, so I kind of couldn't do that even if I wanted (though most of my favorite music isn't really going to be on records anyway.)
And yeah, the price has become a major problem these days too.

I was more of a SNES person, but this statement is absolute fact. The Genesis/Megadrive looked seriously futuristic and just generally nice looking as a piece of hardware. Even the controllers. (Hardware-wise, I also really loved the choice to implement a headphone jack on the front. I always wished that more consoles had done that.)

You mean the OCR? I'd like to verify about this too, but *presumably* it's an offline standard OCR method. Hopefully. Since it's primarily for text being rendered within the same computer and thus digital accuracy of digital fonts, it *probably* doesn't require much to do an OCR and even simpler/older methods likely work well without having to resort to "AI" "vision" methods.
Or so I hope (but still would like to see confirmation.)
EDIT: Someone says they looked at the code and it's local OCR via a long time developed OCR model.

I don't even bother. This is Microsoft we're talking about. After the first backlash they pretended to recall it until people forgot, then tried to sneak it back in. That hasn't worked. I expect the next time to just be sneakier is all. Windows 10 and 11's entire business model has been to gather private user info at an OS level for profit. Anything starting from a base like that will always do these things.

I remember that overarching sense of absolute boredom and straight up dislike for like 95% of everything that was on TV. I had no choice, there were no alternatives. I watched the least awful thing I could. And there were some good things of course, but just so much of the time I had to be watching anything just had to go to whatever was least bad. It's weird that I can remember some I actually rather disliked with something vaguely resembling fondness — I guess in part because at least they were better than most of what's on these days. Which is to say that there may be a lot available today, but it's shoveled in, lowest common denominator, provide only one thing type stuff. (That existed then, but nowhere near to this level...)

I don't know, take this with a grain of salt I'm seeing complaints that they aren't listening about proper moderation and stuff like that. One post put it as "they just see it as an experiment" as in they don't really mean to properly handle it.
I worry it sounds like the whole thing overall is going to do more harm than good. But I guess we have to wait and see. Still, I'll hold my excitement personally until I see just where they're going with this.

Yeah, this trend started in vehicles about 2004 or so and it has driven me crazy since. It's becoming a serious problem too. Those giant vehicles literally make it impossible for smaller vehicles to have protections against them. Plus they block more view (you've probably seen the images that show the angle of view of most American pickups/SUVs now and how whole entire children can be standing there and just simply not seen within that range...)
All I can figure is it comes from "supersizing" in general where people are led to believe that larger is always automatically better and usually the maker and/or seller gets a higher profit margin by getting people to think this way.

Thing is, on the Android side I see it too and OEMs there have a *LOT* more freedom. The fact that so few are at all reasonably sized and almost all are internally junk says that the market itself really is — overall — just buying large phones.
And I absolutely abhor that this is true.
My best phone ever at its time was the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact. Very premium hardware inside for its time. A good fast CPU, enough RAM, etc etc. I later got a Z5 Compact which was almost as good with better hardware, but not as durable and slightly worse side grips.
These things fit **IN** my hand, not **AROUND** my hand as is the popular trend. And they were really *mostly* intended for the Japanese market. Sad thing is, SONY seems to have phased out doing compact models. :Sob:

I agree with this aspect of it, but people so frequently go after the low hanging fruit aspect of it. It's amazing how many people focus on fat-shaming rather than shaming the willful use of poorly applying a cheap bronzer too frequently for example.
But, that said, it's a wholly separate thing usually anyway. Like, if they're attacking peoples' appearances, that's a good time to point this stuff out, but if they're attacking peoples' existences, that's not a good time to point it out. In the latter case, it shouldn't even be mentioned because what matters is the person themselves being bad rather than that they choose to present themselves as some sort of really badly faked image of the false visual ideals they enshrine.

I honestly don't 100% understand things like fanboyism to the degree we're discussing here. People lock themselves in the walled gardens willingly. Hey @npub1ncy…3x0q I want you to get all the donations you need to keep going and then some, but having popups on our desktops that effectively amount to ads is a gigantic no-no that could push people away for good instead. This was not a good idea and I *STRONGLY* urge you to remove this "feature" ASAP.
Yes even only once a year is still too often. No ads/etc should *ever* be a popup within the DE itself. That is never an acceptable practice. I think you underestimate people's well earned hatred of popups and ads. I assure you, they make us *MAD*.

I feel like this is all a very catastrophic reminder that just because an update of something makes it newer — maybe even throws in a new feature or two — doesn't make it automatically a good thing.
I'd like to see a bigger tendency in things to focus on stability where they don't *have* to update as frequently. And I think things like airplanes are absolutely at the top of the list of things where this is *most* needed...

I do agree that guns should never be involved in such a thing. I do not agree that the correct answer is to let us continue to continue to regress further and further back into medieval-level ignorance which also results in much more violence — especially to children who are dying of things such as preventable diseases, not being allowed to get decent jobs or escape poverty because of said lack of education, etc etc.
We're not going to agree on this point. Education is absolutely vital to society and eliminating it degrades us. We may as well move on here because you will never ever change my mind that education is not *VITAL*. Denying it (and allowing parents to do so counts) is, in itself, a violence.

"It is required" does not in any way imply "at gunpoint."
This law is not in any way enforced at gunpoint in any country I know of. Even here in America with all its *numerous* problems with violence it is not. The most violent thing I know of is if a parent continues to refuse to do basic required things for their child, the child may be separated. (This I will qualify as violence in its own way, but the safety of the child does matter too. It is complicated and will not fit character limits.) That is done in a courtroom, not at gunpoint.
If your country uses guns to enforce this, then I will agree that that is not ok.
Anyone who ever points a gun at a child is inherently broken.

When you say "compulsory schooling" do you mean being forced to go to school at all? Because that serves a *VERY* important purpose. At least basic education is an absolute must for a society to actually improve instead of devolving into the kinds of issues from the dark ages. I would argue that the lack of actually *learning* things is a huge part of how my country (America) has gotten where it is today. Everyone is wallowing in willful ignorance, not understanding some pretty basic and very important things because we live in a society that teaches us ignorance (despite good school teachers doing their very best to instill the opposite.)
Basic education is a *must*.
Homework, however, is not.

Yeah, the what is fun question is much more important.
Personally one of my favorite genres out there that seems to fit the general sort of criteria you're discussing is the "screw around while building/maintaining an old junker car" genre. I only know of maybe three or so games in that vein, but it's a lot of fun mostly with the screwing around part. You run around town doing odd jobs, buying parts, modding the car, upgrading garage or whatever, etc.
Perhaps something like that, but not a car? Old house maybe?
There's also the "The Long Drive" sort. I've seen two other games maybe in its vein and both are pretty bad. It's pretty much just drive forever down a procgen road, gathering fuel, swapping out parts (like putting a diesel engine in a tiny RR car, lol) etc.

That can be a dangerous attitude about anything. Just because you don't understand a thing or the reason for it doesn't make it automatically bad... (For that matter, just because you do understand a thing doesn't make it automatically good: see "organic.")
Most things in life are complicated and nuanced.
And don't get me wrong. Some mass produced stuff *does* use bad ingredients. Especially if one has a disorder/disease or allergy to whatever it uses, which happens all too often.
But in the end it's just too nuanced to just look at a list and say "nope" on principle alone.

For the record, there are "instant yeast" breeds (I think it is the right term when it's an actual thing like yeast? Or maybe not, lol.)
That said, mass producers have economy of scale. They can afford the lengthy process because it just keeps going and they're selling the stuff that's already done while new stuff is going. So I harbor doubts on that point.
Really the biggest things are, the wheat germ is more processed and losing somewhat along the way (including flouride — hence the water thing) and more bleached with a lot more sugar than it ought to have. All this likely feeds the wrong gut bacteria more than the right kind.
As a side note, it might be worth trying to make your own and see how your gut does. Using full grain and less sugar may help.

To some extent I will say "fair enough" in that it does change the taste. I've done both ways and yes it tastes better with yeast versus baking soda (until you get too much yeast, then it tastes yeasty, lol.) But it was a... very specific term you chose there...
I'm not really sure that companies have stopped using yeast. I can't say one way or the other on mass producers, but I know most places that make their own bread commercially still use yeast. Most even do the whole keeping a batch "up to date" (I forget what you call it, but where you take some from each batch to add to what what was removed so it evolves over time to a particular taste.) Perhaps mass production companies do use baking soda, but their biggest taste issue is too much sugar.

"Chemical agents" — ... Sure it sounds scary if you say it that way, but I prefer the more standardized term of "baking soda."
Humans have been using baking soda for millennia.
(I don't know about the gluten thing, but I know it's the in thing to claim non-celiac disease gluten sensitivity but it is not supported by evidence and, in fact, generally disproven by evidence. I harbor doubts that they've actually increased gluten that much, but even if they have, you're likely barking up a wrong tree there too.)
Actually, the biggest thing I've heard of in regards to this stuff which I suspect is more likely is that more of the actual hulls/etc get separated out now instead of ground in. This is generally easier, but it is also a bit less healthy in many ways.

Certainly there would be plenty of fast*er* cars, but I just can't see something with the performance this at least should have had not being called still a fast car. It still must have been "sporty" by any definition I can see.

What I'm saying is: it may not be super great at acceleration, but it probably still accelerates.
I think also there may be a matter of manual vs automatic transmission. The automatic was apparently a three speed. (It doesn't mention overdrive. Maybe they didn't have it back then?) Manual was five speed. That would... make a world of difference... (Understatement of the year...)

Are you sure? The description says it was meant to compete with the Corvette and it's a two-door, two-seater coup with almost no storage space and those whatever you call them on the back window that make the rear view practically non-existent running a large V6 with a pretty decent amount of power and torque for its time.
Like it may be relatively comfortable to sit in as the seats do look kind of roomy, but it doesn't sound like something you'd want to travel a long distance in to me.
I admit I knew nothing about the car and have to look it up (and back when I saw this movie knew even less) and perhaps it's not designed to actually out-accelerate a Corvette, but it really sounds like this thing should not exactly be a slouch either...

I have a strange question for you #Retrogaming enthusiasts. Is there any sort of *reasonable* completely offline server + client for the old Ragnarok Online game? (The MMORPG with the overhead view, not that sidescrolling thing they did later.) Something actually easy to setup that I can run in WINE/Proton or something like that would be preferable. Preferably something with the original maps and everything. I don't even want any extreme modifications (like I tried one freeshard once a long long time ago with something like 50x XP or something and it made leveling completely unfun...)
Was just getting a bit nostalgic for some of the old stuff I played way way back in the day, but I don't want to do online services. I want something that runs entirely on my own PC.

Well, Wikipedia says that they do eat meat sometimes — generally around spring when they're struggling to find sufficient protein between when the stuff they buried is starting to sprout and no longer edible and before newly grown stuff is ready to eat.

There is. The point is: if a person can't run it, I can't recommend that they try to run it since they can't run it.
I'm glad you have money. I do not. I've been having to work out a lot of stuff lately looking forward and the phone, unfortunately had to be delegated to a lower priority. I am not the only one in this situation. Unless you're planning to hand out money (or the phones themselves,) don't decide for people that they should go buy something.
I don't really understand why you're even arguing so hard about this, but let's move on. Graphene is good — for those who can use it — and I recommend it — for those who can use it. But like it or not, its availability is limited.

Unfortunately, whichever is the reason, the result is the same: anyone without a Pixel device can't use it at all and anyone without a very recent Pixel device will find themselves much more limited. I'm not blaming Graphene, I'm just saying I can't recommend it to people who... don't have a Pixel... Which, unfortunately, means a *huge* number of Android users.
And no, we don't all have hundreds for new devices. (Don't forget also, we have to work with the sellers and etc — especially when buying used — to ensure Verizon hasn't gotten their dirty claws on it and locked it. Yes, Google lets Verizon lock them. Not sure if any others do.) Buying used comes with its own caveats and still isn't exactly cheap.

Yeah, GrapheneOS has some great security features. It's too bad they keep it so tightly limited on hardware though. That makes it a lot harder to recommend. And some of us can't afford to necessarily upgrade that often either. I have a Pixel, but it's "Bramble" (4A 5G) which just went into the long term support meaning basically no updates unless it's something ultra-serious breaking, so I'm having to make serious considerations of if it's better to just keep using the old builds that will surely get badly out of date or switch to something else that does less of stuff like this but stay more up to date.

As far as I'm concerned, Android must never ever be run stock except just one time to make initial service provider connections on the SIM to enable full features (and definitely no eSIM because you need to be able to swap/etc and control it yourself.)
No one should buy any phone that can't run a third party OS such as LineageOS (though better still, more secure variants like Graphene or Calyx whenever they finish their security audit or etc.) Obviously staying away from phones provided by "service" providers like Verizon that lock them down... Absolutely, under no circumstances should any phone be allowed to run stock more than just the few minutes it takes to initialize things, then unlock and install something clean.

Oh I totally get that, I really do! I know they have to use JavaScript because of blocking/etc Youtube is doing so they can process things to look like a browser being run by a user.
But that doesn't mean this is the correct way to handle it...
Like I said, I think the real answer is to just integrate the necessary code into their own project. Essentially still using the external dependency, but keeping it in a much more controlled and minimal way without external installation.
I will say that I won't be installing this Deno at this time. When it's properly evaluated more and starts showing up as a package in distros — if that even can happen — maybe, but I'm not just going to install something from a site trying so hard to sell itself to me just because yt-dlp tells me to.

This one makes for quite a problem IMO. It's requiring an external tool that as far as I can tell isn't even managed by distros (I can't find packages anyway) so has to be manually installed and one has to wonder how much it can be trusted (like sure it is right now, but will it remain so?) The less preferred options don't even work on their own — you have to use a command line parameter.
What I'm really wondering here is why they don't just integrate its code into their own code. If they can't do that because of licensing, they need to instead focus on using something where they can. Then they have control over just how much it actually uses and how.
I think they may be losing sight of the fact that yt-dlp was meant to be a small, mostly self-contained package.
