lool yeah, love the idea. Does it automatically catapult the chickens back over the fence? I imagine that a little like the comic-style circus cannons, complete with flying feathers and angry chicken noises!

Dear #chickensofmastodon and #gardening communities, how do you keep your chickens from devastating your vegetables?
I've got a raised bed that needs to be fenced in with metal wire, and they still get in, and built a ground-level vegetable patch fenced in by a bamboo fence (which I thought would be enough - laughable in hindsight).
As the garden year is winding down I'm thinking about fall planting some green manure (not possible in the ground-level patch currently) and structural changes, so give me all your tricks!
I need the little dinosaurs to keep their claws and beaks off my veggies next year!

Hey @npub1pce…geep ! I have a problem, and wonder if any of you might have similar problems, but maybe, hopefully, also a solution to go with it?
After intense days, my body decides that what I need now is not a full night of sleep, but intensely processing my stress at 4am. It takes the form of my mind being wide awake, looking for problems to solve. Could be real to-dos, but if I get those out of my mind, it'll reliably find other things to ruminate about.
Has anybody found a way to avoid that and tell their bodies to go to sleep? It compounds and leads to a constantly deteriorating state after a few nights like that.
I've learnt about body scans, muscle relaxation and breath work in therapy, but those don't help much: my body is decently relaxed, but my mind is wide awake and racing.

Rainman was the reason I didn't consider being autistic for a long time, too. I'm certainly not that far out on the spectrum, but I'm still well able to collapse regularly if I don't get enough quiet time, as I've learned the hard way. The phrase "but everybody feels that way" was a sign of more than a few non-neurotypical people in my family tree, not a sign that we were all normal.

thanks for that essay.
I'm sad for all the people who grew up earlier, and that today might get help and understanding instead of being pressured and excluded. For autistic parents who got overwhelmed, and for their children who suffered under them. I'm sad for all the people who still, today, feel "other" but can't find a name for the feeling or get misdiagnosed. We're so many that we might as well be called normal. We've always been there.

Can someone point me to some research that proves that sports or bodily activity actually *cause* improvements in #depression and #burnout , rather than just correlate?
I've just been told again to just "go for walks more" by a doctor and I find it really fucking hard to implement. I need some convincing.
Because I'm well able to believe that people who are able to do sports also improve their depression (correlation), because the damage to their ability to be active just isn't as big. I need to see actual causation, please.
Retoots welcome for range.

People are offended because he is singling out autistic people, and talks about them as if they are worthless. And the history of fascism has taught us that what comes next might be actual violence instead of just verbal. This is extremely dangerous, and there needs to be strong pushback on this rhetoric.
Subtleties such as "Tylenol might or might not contribute a bit" are not what the whole discussion is about, and shouldn't be our focus. 2/2

while I appreciate your dedication to civil discourse, truth and being the better person... I believe you are missing a point.
The *increase* in autism, which is all that rfk jr and Trump are talking about, is obviously caused by exactly what you describe: you just didn't get diagnosed in Gen X. There was stigma, there was no help available, doctors didn't know about it. Now we diagnose more. The prevalence of autism was very likely similar all the time. We can't prove otherwise because there's just not enough data.
JFK doesn't care about the cause of autism, and even if Tylenol caused it, that wouldn't be the point. It's fascism doing what it always did: making up a threatening scenario and pretending to "solve" it with simple solutions. 1/2

Not as many as I had hoped, but still pretty decent. Still happy I don't have to live off that soil.

#Gardening bubble, I need some tips. I'm thinking about creating a #wildflower #meadow with native plants in this part of the garden. Can I have some suggestions on what to prepare before sowing? Do I need to dig up the whole area? cover the area with fresh earth or #compost?
It's a pretty dark area: eastern side of the house, under a large gingko tree. The roots are close to the surface, so breaking up the whole soil will not be easy.
zone 7b, sandy soil, thin toplayer.

Also: helping other people, most of the time, is work. Work does not feel good.

Would it be about the same for a regular compost heap?

hmm interesting. our compost heap is definitely a chicken magnet. The chickens mostly don't dig all the way down but just move the top layer around.
The difference could be that
a) we use kitchen scraps on the compost, not only garden waste. That's extremely attractive to our chickens, especially if it's not just vegetables but fruit.
b) our whole area is much smaller than yours and the compost is one of the best places to catch protein snacks (bugs, worms)

2024-09-04 19:35:27 UTC

@npub1sh5…uyrq what's your opinion on combining #compost heaps with free ranging #chickens? Seeing as they influence the worm ecosystem (by eating them), but also help getting oxygen into the pile and add droppings?
