The boy was quite excited about his gift. He got a crazy amount of cash, not a single ounce of silver, and 500,000 sats.
We sat together for a little while. I showed him my Coldcard Q, and he installed Nunchuk on his phone. We imported the wallet to his phone, and he got to see his sats.
I told him a bit about the basics. He can watch and receive for now. I’m hoping he’ll get in touch so I can teach him more, and eventually he can take self-custody into his own hands.

Today is the day my nephew gets his first BTC, and hopefully begins his learning journey.
I’ve concluded that 500,000 sats is an appropriate amount. It’s a lot for me to give, but he is my nephew after all.
Since I’m gifting on-chain, I wanted it to be a decent sized UTXO for the future. I’ll download the wallet app on his phone so he can view it for now, and I’ll keep a backup of the seed.
I’m using the Coldcard Q with Nunchuk, fantastic hardware paired with fantastic software.
In time, I’ll leave it up to him, if and when he can reassure me that he understands what he’s doing and has learned the ins and outs.

Got a nephew who is soon to be a man. Going through confirmation next weekend.
Back in the day, people gave silver at baptism and confirmation. They knew about inflation back then. They knew why.
They gave gold and silver as gifts to children. Now people give money, and it’s worthless when the recipient gets of age.

Sorry for the long post, i promise its interesting!
I got into a discussion at work today with a woman in her 50’s and some guys i work with. She works as a project manager at the firm.
We have spoken on several occations before.
Today, in a group of 5 grown ups, me included, we got onto the topic of banking and intrest.
Here is a quote from me:
«Dont you find it strange, that when you go into a bank today to get a morgage. You are not really loaning money right? Its not like its sitting in an account at the bank, and is moved from them to you? Right?
When you get a «loan» today, the money is brand new! Like, it dident exist at all before you went in there. They just wave their wand, and poof, where there was none, there now is plenty»
And they all started laughing in my face. What a moron to think such a thing.
I tried to say «that is acually how it works»
They laughed more.
The woman:
«I am on the board of a bank, thats not how it works. Ofcourse the bank has money»
The four of them almost convinced me i was wrong. I just said.
«I think you need to check some facts about how banking works»
And left. They kept laughing.
This woman tho…
She is acually on the board of a small local bank here in Norway.

Yes indeed.
But it was hard as a european in the begining. The media was very negative to him from the start (turned out they where right), but! They even made statements he made about peace into something bad. Witch i dident understand.
I did respect hes view on war, and the fact that he said on multiple occations that we should stop killing eachother. So simple, so true. Yet, here we go again.
The old saying, Young men who dont know eachother, killing eachother, for old men who are on first name basis.
And its always the most undeserving who pay the highest price.

New computer have arrived.
Will spend the evening after work on hooking up and getting Linux installed.

New computer is on its way. Second hand. Bought is from a young man upgrading his setup.
RTX 3080. Ryzen 9 5900x. 1TB nvme. Rainbow color fans… typical gaming setup! I will try to kill the lights, im too old for that!
And as always, a deal was made with 100% trust given from both parties. The one thing i really love about Norway is the amount of trust we have for one another. And misuse of this trust is so rare. Good people everywhere!
Cant wait to get it running.
I hope my old one will be able to run the pruned node very soon. And the new can be put to work on some new projects. Any recommandations?
Thinking cpu/gpu mining for fun? Som AI agent work. All in the spirit of learning.

Update on the node.
Taking for ever! But is still creeping up. Like 0,2 0-3 % pr day. Amazingly slow. I will not quit. My patiens is infinite. The old computer will struggle to finish its task. But it will do good as a designated node maskin. Sure is not got for anything else.
Taking on an extra week of on call duty at work. Fri-fri. Starts tomorrow. The FIAT grind is real.
Pays well. Will be buying a new computer to set up in the new house for the money made next week.

I will solo mine with this one. Cost me about 75$ to get and a buck or so a month to run.
For me it is about getting into the space, doing the work, setting up, learning and feeling the etos of Bitcoin.
And for me kidz to see, to ask questions and to see what the future holds.

I have done some copper casting before. Maybe i should hand cast a copper heatsinks.
Mine is also blowing the air onto the heatsink instead for drawing air.

My old machine is still chugging away at the bitcoin blockchain. Synced up to 50% now. Seems promising.
Going for pruned was a good idea.
No miners running at this time, does not feel right.
Hope to get one up and running again soon.
Only 17 days until i start moving into a new house, exciting. Cant wait to move into my nerdcave.

Moving to a new house this spring. Gonna get a setup with some small miners at the new house, and get some solar and battery installed.
Then when fall comes, i hope the price of the Avalon Q has come down some, and i can spring for one.
If not, ill keep looking around for what’s available in that heating output range.

Anywhere from 0 to -20 celsius. But im guessing the average in the winter months (des,jan,feb) is about -10.
Its on the boarder between east/west Norway, so you can get some mild climate from the coast.

Mining update
February: The cabin was kept at a nice 12-16 degrees celcius.
This is alot warmer than usual, and more than necessary.
But here are the numbers.
I used 720 kWh on the miner.
It mined for 21 days. (Dident start untill 07.02)
At 650sats/day is 13650 sats
I paid 0,85kr/kWh (0,09$ish)
Power total 612kr (62$ish)
Sats are worth 95kr (10$ish)
If i needed all heat produced anyways it would be a 16%ish discount on my heating bill.
The machine cost 40$.
Down paid for in 4months
Rest as they say is history
I was gonna run an S9 with only 2 boards at the cabin for march, so as to now produce as much excess heat.
But now…. This very moment. I lost communication with a temp sensors.
And i was gonna send it up there tomorrow with my wife, so she could plug it in when she left on sundag. Anyways. Not gonna happen now.
Anyone with experience fixing hashbords?
This is an 8 year old machine. For next to nothing. Trash for the professionals.
I can only imagine what the numbers are like for the newer models and machines. Like the Avalon Q, been drooling at this. If anyone know anyone at Avalon. I want one. I will review that ting to its limits. I would love that!

Short update on the node venture.
My old pc is not well. I did a new format and reinstalled Linux, started the pruned node all over again and is now syncing. Estimate it will take a couple of days.
New computer is on the wish list! Starting a move to a new house in just over a month, i might even have room there for a dedicated mining/node/nerd cave.
Cant wait.

Update on my full node adventure.
I have abandoned it. It is a sad day.
My old computer did not handle it. Chat gpt was horrified to find out my processor var manufactured in 2008.
But the harddrive var the worst of it. He called it spinning metal.
Im not buying anything new, for now.
But!
I have found out about «pruned node»
Looking into that now. Will update!

Leaving the house for an 8 day vacation and have a little shy o’ 40Th/s of mining power ready for a solo quest while we are away.
2 S9, one for the livingroom/kitchen and the other in the hallway/bathroom.
Last one is an S9i with one hashboard removed for less heating effect placed upstairs to just keep the frost out of the bedrooms.
Maybe i will come home to find 3,125 on the floor… and kaachiiing

I had my first in 2018, a boy.
My second in 2020, a girl.
Took on a fosterchild in 2025, a boy.
I now love all children. Everytime i see one in a store or a cafe I have to look them in the eyes and smile. Cause i want their world to be a place of smiling faces.
Kidz are literally the future, and we should care for them as such.

Update on my mining venture.
The S9 at the hut is running smooth. It keeps the living area, kitchen and bathroom at a nice 10-14 degrees Celsius. This is a bit to high, and the total power used has gone up slightly.
I thinks it is due to the heat not spreading evenly and it not replacing the other heaters 100%.
Last days i have been working on an S9i that has a faulty hashboard. I removed the faulty one and are now solo mining with 2 boards in my basement. This might be better for the cabin, as it should draw around 900W instead og 1430. Might be better with a bit less.
And i have hopes ill be able to flash in BraiinsOS on this one as it is a different model than the others.

Back home! Miner is up and running keeping the cabin frost free :)
I will keep tinkering with the other S9’s.
Bitcoin Core is still downloading, been at it for nearly 3 weeks and are at 46%. Something must be wrong, but i will just let it so its thing and we will see.
I am spending way more money on this than i will ever get back! But i am learning.

I just did the short ski trip from the road to my cabin, about 1,5km in 20ish m/s wind and «snøfokk» you have a english word for that? About 2 meter visability.
Had an S9, my laptop, cables and a smart wall plug adapter in my backpack. And 3 beers. Gonna get right into the sauna, stay the night, hook up the S9 tomorrow morning and head home :) short trip.
So from tomorrow, my cabin is being heated by the Bitcoin network when no one is here.

In other news, i went away this weekend. Put one S9 in my living room and one in the hallway blowing into the bathroom.
They keep my house from freezing (between -20C and -15C outside) and made me 2k sats for free. Aint much, but its honest work.

Been running all week and are @25%, last days have been slow. Is it my connection?
My internett is working fine on all other devices.

Still downloading! 21%! Down and the rest to go :)
Still tinkering away on the S9 project. I have desided to try one out with stockOS and see how much heat it produces at the cabin and how well it is spreaf around the rooms. Maybe experiment a bit with placement and airflow direction.
Im hoping that it wont be to much heat, the ideal situasjon i would need just a slight bit from the regulare heater. In that case the miner could just run and i would have a seprate termostat to top off.
If it produses too much heat i am considering removing one hashboard.
Anyways, wont be able to go untill next weekend, you know, FIAT job, gotta keep the city warm.
Ill keep you posted on the node progress! Hopfully in wont crash at 98% and have me start over.

I am still on break from my S9s.
I have dug out my old computer from storage. This will be my full node. It only has 500GB so i will keep the copy on an external 2TB disk.
I wil first konvert my machine to Linux. Never had it before.
I am on a learning mission now! Lets go!
Btw, the machine is currently running Windows 7 Home Premium!

Poetic!
Chatgpt would have me belive that this exact model of the S9 is not compatible with the process. Do you know if this is correct? That some machines (early models, mine are from 2017) cannot be used in this way?
Braiins have removed the other ways of getting their OS into the S9, so am i stuck?

I can not get BraiinsOS to run on my S9. Im getting frustrated with this.
When i try to flash the SD card with the proper file using Balena Etcher, my computer crashes. If i use the Win32 program it dosent flash, just sorta copies a set of readable files onto the card, or something, it dosent look right. And it wont run.
This wont really matter at the cabin.
This matters somewhat in the workshop
This is a dealbreaker for the house.
I think my only real solution at this point is a newer model for the house? Like an S17 or S19?
