one hundred percent. And the manual typewriter (and I also took piano classes for many years) made you strong enough to keep your posture and habits good enough to avoid repetitive motion problems. Tho my typing accuracy on glass screens with autocorrect has gotten atrocious. My typing teacher and my editor mom would be ashamed of many of my unedited postings.

there is nothing ironic about pointing out that until the CO2 (and methane) concentrations drop the heating will increase. It is the simple physics of it. We could have taken more action in 2006 when An Inconvenient Truth came out; we didn’t and this two decades of war in gincluding this and following summers, are the simple direct result. Until we stop intensifying the cause, the effect will intensify.

I have quit smoking a few times. So not much to add here. It took me a bit of luck as well as actually not wanting to smoke, but also needed moment by moment not smoking without making it dependent on being a good person in some difficult sense. It also helped me to be nagged by people I trust to stop. 100% something I could not just decide to change and be changed.

people change continuously - most times when people try to intentionally change they fail. Especially for something like "become better people" rather than try to walk a bit more or eat less sugar or change how you dress; I think this is because accepting the reality of who you really are and working with that (rather than force yourself into some idealized other) works to make life's potential more accessible, moment by moment.

hopefully your 1/2 vote for Collin’s won’t be the thing that puts my trans and queer family members into a reeducation camp or kicked out of their apartments and jobs, or my immigrant family members into an ICE camp. Because those, to me, seem to be the stakes. Feel free to come to a different view point, but this isn’t some abstract political tactics discussion; people are heated for a reason.

I can but I like an Eink reader for two reason - it looks better and I do better with finishing books when a fixed physical object is “reading that book” rather than something I also use to check Mastodon or do financial things or whatever.

Whereas with Java upgrades we have to write code transformers and still have a list of manual changes due to open source deps randomly changing. What? And when I was using terraform a few years ago also I had to write code transformer to go from .10 to .12 to .14 with no end in sight. /n

this is not related to your direct thread but it always surprises me how wantonly open source is about breaking changes. Maybe because two of my main languages where I had other people using my library's were C and Python, but in both these cases (at work) I would never consider releasing a non-backwards compatible 1/2

ironically your dis-recommendation for Arch derivatives and your recommendation for Ubuntu shows how solid the Debian distro is. You just don't have to fix it at a low level like you do Gentoo or Arch even after years. (Well I did but that was because i manually installed a bunch of 32 bit libraries to enable my son to play terraria and steam before that was all worked out).

I carry the book around with me for what I expect to be the rest of my life. If I find out the author raped people or something like that, then I can recycle the book but otherwise I am condemned to fall under the spell of the idea of 50 hour days with no responsibilities except reading.
