RE: https://mastodon.social/@MastodonEngineering/117128796127029335
Does anyone know?
“We now have better support for account handle changes for accounts hosted elsewhere on the fediverse. You can’t change your Mastodon handle for now, but this is a necessary step towards being able to do so in the future.”
Is this about changing the server-local user name? Or about supporting server-independent handles?

2/ Thinking about it some more: Passkeys are probably fine if:
1. You only use one browser.
2. That browser manages your passkeys
3. and syncs them across your devices.

Is it just me? I find passwords easier to use than passkeys.

It’s a shame that neither macOS nor Windows have good built-in GUI support for encrypting ZIP archives.
(Not very safe) encryption via shell:
zip -re FILES.zip FILES/
MacOS supports decryption of such files (I don’t know about Windows).
Safer: AES-256 encryption

• Windows app: https://www.7-zip.org/

It’s interesting how many people want the results (fame, money, etc.) but don’t enjoy the work that gets them there and don’t really care about the product. That’s also how we have been producing goods (food, furniture, clothes, etc.) for a long time.

I’m still processing what’s going on in tech at the moment. I used to feel at home in that world. It used to feel incredibly creative and positive. Now it’s increasingly full of bugs, dark addicting patterns and AI slop.
I’m not sure how to change that. We need to provide a better vision for the future than what’s currently pushed by most tech companies. They have a lot of power and (e.g.) many politicians listen to them. That’s why different narratives are important.

Using Cloudflare for static file hosting:
• Cloudflare Pages is easy to use but forwards requests from /home.html to /home (which I don’t want because it changes existing URLs)
• Solution: Switch to Workers where forwarding can be switched off.
• New problem: / isn’t forwarded to /index.html anymore. Not sure how to fix that yet.
• A % in a filename caused an error with an obscure message and prevented deployment.
I may not be their target audience. I just want simple static file hosting.

I would say:
• Don’t add anything to the ECMAScript standard.
• Use the filename extension .ts to trigger type-stripping in browsers.

2025-09-24 13:42:05 UTC

- reply

If the proposal goes through, the ECMAScript standard will change and have more grammar rules. Additionally, there are several TS features not supported by JS + type annotations (IIRC).
Type-stripping does not change JavaScript: Its input is real TypeScript with most TS features. Its output is normal JavaScript.

2025-09-24 12:56:12 UTC

There is a proposal to add optional type annotations to JS: https://github.com/tc39/proposal-type-annotations
But I’m wondering: Wouldn’t be better if browsers supported type stripping (like Node.js etc. already do): It feels cleaner to me.
JSPM already supports client-side type stripping (if a file has the filename extension .ts): https://jspm.org/docs/cli/

I haven’t yet gotten feedback from an actual non-programmer, though! I’d be very curious if they feel overwhelmed, challenged or relaxed by the material.

2/ Optional service: Keep a backup somewhere that downloads from current server and can upload to a new server, should something happen. The latter works because post IDs don’t change.

2025-09-19 20:39:57 UTC

1/ Would this work with ActivityPub? Idea for making #Mastodon accounts more portable:
Domain becomes user name: DNS entry specifies current server. Optional: Domain name also points to current server.
All servers have universal URLs (and IDs) for posts: some-server.com/@some-user.com/021132...
• Each server uses the DNS entry of some-user.com to determine the user’s current server and retrieves posts from there.

Am I getting this right?
• Both Node.js and Deno grant permissions to the whole app (network access, file access, etc.).
• Wouldn’t it be better to additionally specify permissions for dependencies? That could prevent a rogue utility library from accessing files even though the app itself is allowed to access them.

I don’t understand why exceptions are so widely disliked:
• Rust’s Option<> is nice for handling errors we want to take care of immediately.

• Typedoc is a devDependency.
• It has TypeScript has a dependency. Therefore, tsc is installed into node_modules/.bin

My workaround is to delete the symlink node_modules/.bin/tsc

– Pro of classes: compact definition of type, instance factory, operations and property default values in a single place
– Pro of object types: works better with serialization/deserialization (e.g. JSON).

And it really doesn’t have to be that way. Humans are much more altruistic than you’d think. But many of the people in power are (or think like) MBAs where thinking in terms of profit is very common. Benefits:
• ES20YY: use new features on old platforms (via transpilation)
• ESNext: never needs updating; ensures there’s never transpilation (useful with erasableSyntaxOnly)

I keep getting this wrong: The official abbreviation of WebAssembly is spelled “Wasm” (not “WASM”). It’s not an acronym.

#TypeScript is being rewritten in Go: “The native implementation will drastically improve editor startup, reduce most build times by 10x, and substantially reduce memory usage.”

I take it this is about X/Twitter and not about Boston TS? 😉

Lynx is a new competitor to React Native by ByteDance: https://lynxjs.org/
• Can be used via React (but that’s optional): https://lynxjs.org/react
• Build tools are based on Rspack: https://lynxjs.org/rspeedy
It’s a shame that it only runs in the terminal (OK, that one’s a joke).

It’s really difficult to pick an operating system right now:
• macOS is continually degrading in quality: Apple are over-promoting their services and there are more and more small bugs and glitches: https://mjtsai.com/blog/2025/03/04/premium-hardware-subpar-software/
• Same for Windows: ads, AI, etc.
Linux still has many issues but is slowly catching up.

What are the most popular bundlers at the moment, apart from Vite?
My list is currently:
* Libraries: esbuild, Rolldown, Rollup, Rspack
* Larger: RSBuild, Parcel, Turbopack, Rsbuild
I haven’t heard much of Turbopack since its introduction, though. Is that because it’s used internally by the Next.js tooling?

Why still bundle JavaScript?
Given that HTTP/2 lets us download multiple files per connection, the one remaining benefit is the elimination of unused code, right?

I’ve never seen that before on the web. https://frame.work is getting a lot of traffic after new products were introduced.
This “waiting room” is a Cloudflare feature: https://www.cloudflare.com/application-services/products/waiting-room/

Node.js wish: Parse the hashbang on all platforms and use its options. Example:
#!/usr/bin/env -S node --disable-warning=ExperimentalWarning

#TypeScript: Baffled where the `never` comes from. Is that a TS bug?
type SimpleEqual2<X, Y> =
X extends Y
? (Y extends X ? ['trueY', X, Y] : ['falseY', X, Y])
: ['falseX', X, Y]
;
type R = SimpleEqual2<'a'|'b', 'b'|'c'>;
// ["falseX", "a", "b" | "c"] | ["trueY", "b", "b"] | ["falseY", never, "c"]

I’m tagging my TS posts with # TypeScript so that they are easy to mute.

Argument in favor of single-quote string literals: It’s easier to quote HTML—where double quotes are a clear standard.
I got used to single quotes there and now use them elsewhere too.
