That's fair. I'll learn the language to access the material without losing my accent, even if I'm not fully sold on the philosophy behind it. I will have a utilitarian stance for now, but I'll keep exploring alternatives on the side.

Accidentally Constructivist: Asking the Wall if the Moon is Cheese
I'm learning about formal proofs and logic, and honestly, a lot of it feels off. Maybe it’s my background in CS (I dropped out of community college, but the intuition stuck).
First, Proof by Contradiction feels weird. Just because something is "Not False" doesn't necessarily mean it's True. It’s just... Not False. It's like saying just because I didn't lose, I must have won. But what if it's a draw? Why does the lack of a counter-example suddenly count as absolute proof? It feels like we're conflating "undisprovable" with "true." Gödel literally proved that truth is bigger than proof, so why do we pretend the binary covers everything?
And Vacuous Truth seems preposterous. Wdym "from falsehood follows anything"? How can you have a valid proof where the contra-proof is equally valid? "All unicorns are purple" is True, but "All unicorns are green" is also True? What kind of Schrödinger's cat logic is that? It feels like asking a wall if the moon is cheese. The wall says nothing, so logic assumes "Yes." To me, logic is looking for Compliance (did I break a rule?), but I’m looking for Content (does this actually exist?).
I also have issues with Set Theory, specifically the Empty Set. Math admits that Infinities can differ (Reals > Naturals), so why is "Nothing" always the same? In ZFC, an empty set of apples is identical to an empty set of oranges. That feels wrong. Think about the Zero Vector in physics. It has zero magnitude, but it still has direction (2D vs 3D). It remembers where it came from. The Empty Set should be the same, it should keep a trace of what it’s empty of.

It looks like they explicitly cite 'moderation' and 'screening' as the reason, though they don't elaborate on what exactly they are screening for. I assume the 'why now' is likely due to the recent flood of AI slop.
If that’s the case, they could just partner with multilingual detection tools like Turnitin or GPTZero. That would reduce the moderator workload significantly without restricting the languages scientists can use
I still don't fully understand their decision, because the effect will be losing significant market share. If their motive is helping America or themselves, they should want arXiv to be open to everyone so that they remain the center of scientific discovery, rather than pushing researchers elsewhere.

Fair point. I don't know how arXiv operates financially; to be honest, I have no idea of the ins and outs of arXiv. However, if cost is the issue, why shift the burden to the author? Perhaps use decent automated translation tools like DeepL or Google Cloud. Maybe have arXiv implement a 'Translate' button on the site for readers. I know it's not going to be perfect, but it would be better than nothing.
I see. If that's the case, then I meant 'put on the arXiv', my bad (I have no experience with arXiv other than reading/skimming papers put on there).
If arXiv is just a platform where people put papers up, then why is it concerning itself with translation? It seems to me that they're basically a storage unit or repository. If a paper that gets put on arXiv is groundbreaking, I would hope the scientific community would translate it. Grothendieck didn't translate his own work to English, yet it spread because the ideas were vital.
I'm not really familiar with arXiv, so I don't understand why they are mandating English upfront. Is arXiv betting that they can predict what is 'valuable' enough to be worth reading? Does that mean if something isn't in English, we should discard it? If that's the case, it feels kind of bigoted. Maybe I'm missing something, I'm quite ignorant and I'm not in proximity to the scientific community, so maybe that's where my confusion is, but I just don't get it.

Why can't they just translate the papers themselves after they've been published? If they deem a paper to be useful, then they could translate it themselves.
That said, I could see how a common language would make collaboration efficient, like the metric system. Unfortunately, America doesn't follow that, yet they expect others to speak their language.
I think perhaps having a short summary of the paper in multiple languages would be good, but translating the whole thing into English seems like they're trying to bully others. It's not like the rest of the world is asking people who upload papers in English to translate them into other languages. It seems unfair.
Also regarding AI slop, I think they could just incorporate the same technology that checks students work for AI like https://gptzero.me/ or something like that. Personally, I do use AI to help fix my grammar cause i'm quite weak on language oriented subjects plus I didn't grow up in America and I'm dyslexic for those reasons, I don't think AI writing is completely bad, it been useful in that regards for me but I could see how it would be bad regarding research papers.
