AI use has been so normalized now that some people hate you for not using it. Reminds me of phones, people get the same reaction if you don't have a phone. It's crazy how fast a new technology gets adopted and how you feel like you're the odd one out for not using it.

Some people use GNU/Linux because of how good the user experience is. Windows annoys you with ads, macOS have you go through extra steps to run programs that are not apple verified and GNU/Linux just works. And while it is true that GNU/Linux has the best user experience I think people should remember that it's free (as in freedom) software that got us to that point.

What do you mean? They are CFLAGS that are passed to gcc. They depend on libasan and libubsan. I just think it's cool that you can do that. And some flags can help you catch use after free and other memory related bugs with gcc. It won't error and not compile but you'll get warnings that describe the bug and show where it is in your code and I thought this is cool and all the Rust shill are talking about Rust saying it's something you can't get in C, but you can. I am practicing my C skills right now and reading K&R and doing all the exercise with friends and we discovered all this cool stuff so we can test our programs to catch those bugs.

You can switch between code and data mode pretty easily though. Like (+ 1 2 3) is code and '(+ 1 2 3) is data. Or did I miss something?

Just look at the CVEs for Firefox most of them are memory bugs. And yeah Firefox does have some rust code but its only like 10% and the rest is C, C++ and JavaScript

I would actually pay for movies and anime and tv series if you just got the mp4 or mkv to download after you bought it. I don't pirate because I want something for free, I do it because I don't get any of that DRM content. Why can't I just pay to get the files?

@nprofile…a4lr nope. https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/security/known-vulnerabilities/firefox/ just look at those. Most of those are just like I said. So I think big project can benefit from Rust as big project are more complex and it's easier to make mistakes like that. Firefox already uses Rust for some part of their browser but it's a pretty small part.

When I check CVEs most of the time it's memory safety related problems use after free and bounds checking. And this happens way too often especially in big projects like firefox or firefox based browsers. So many of those vulnerabilities could be fixed simply by using Rust. I think it makes sense to rewrite some things in Rust. While not perfect it could help avoid so many of those which happen way too often. Though sometimes it goes too far like we get a rust rewrite for a tiny program that didn't even need one, but I would say for big projects, using Rust makes a lot of sense.

I haven't actually tried. I had just read that in the Guix docs, maybe that changed since then. But it's really the only distro I ever seen that lets you choose your kernel with GNU Hurd as an option right in the installer. I am just using the Linux-libre kernel.

Install GNU Guix System, that's the most GNU you'll get on your PC. It even allows you to choose GNU Hurd as the kernel in the installer if you want (but I think you can't use xorg or wayland on that yet).

I been reading a few programming books, SICP, The Land of Lisp and Learn You a Haskell for Great Good. They are actually fun and interesting books to read for me and I like what they teach in it and what you learn from it. It might be useful for me when I start programming, we'll see. I now have a better understanding of them. I don't program much but I like learning about all the different ways to solve problems.

Well I do use Haskell and Lisp regularly but for low level stuff they might not be ideal if you know what I mean. I would say memory safety is important to avoid buffer overflows, use after free, etc. which is extremely common in C programs even to this day. Of course you can say it's a skill issue. I do like C but it's kinda easy to make those mistakes so I'd rather avoid them when possible. Of course there can be bugs that cause security issue in the logic of the code as well but those are easier to test.

Also what would be the best thing to replace Rust currently? I like C but Rust does help avoiding common C mistakes (I know C but I suck at writing C) so is there another language that helps with that that is free software? Zig maybe?

Nice I didn't know about that. Not that I need to calculate big numbers like that, I just thought it was cool that ghc allowed that. Since Haskell is my main programming language. Also learning some lisp and Rust.

I find it disappointing how many of the big distros are not standing against age verification laws. Makes me think that if there were law to add NSA backdoor into every OS they would just do it without question. Systemd already added a feature that stores the date of birth of the user. Its not that bad since its just a number you can change but it shouldn't even have been done in the first place. And age verification requires a way to verify the users age so that implies showing your ID or scanning your face. All this just goes against the privacy and freedom of the user and limiting them in how they can use a computer.

I hate how so many sites have 75% of their page and code hosted on other sites so I have to allow JavaScript from like 10 websites to view one. Why can't they just host it all on their own server? Of course JavaScript is already a problem if its non-free but this makes it even worse.

I like how minimal SeaBIOS is, no fancy features and all that. Just a boot menu where you select your boot device. This is what a BIOS should be all about and forget about UEFI too. The only thing a BIOS should do is boot your OS and of course all the initialization stuff before it's able to do that.

I haven't really noticed any performance issues since disabling the intel management engine, makes me wonder what that thing really does. Or at least if there are any issues they aren't some noticeable ones for me.

Everyone feels fake nowadays in most of my real life interaction. I often hear some say things like "go outside", "get a job", "get laid" I got all 3 and I wish I didn't. If I go outside you get people who drive dangerously, jobs are just bs and I work only for the money, I hate my job I wish I could just be home all day and learn more about computers and dedicate more time for my hobbies. Sometimes I feel like I don't have time for anything and I am just speed running life to death. I wouldn't be the type who plays video games and watch TV all day.

Computers should be simple and every computer should come with a manual that explains everything about the computer and how to program on it. Just like it used to be in the past. People should learn how to program them to use them. Software should be simple and the code and documentation should be easy to read and understand. People should be encouraged to make changes to their system so it behaves how they want it to rather than learning how a company wants them to use their computer.

Like maybe a small city or quiet part of a big city or something. I grew up in the country and I never understood how someone can live there and never get bored. lol

Japan is really ideal for public transport and cycling. I heard many good things about it. If I was offered to work there and live there I think I would. There are problems in Japan too of course like in every country but at least it would be more fun using your bike there or taking public transport and not relying on cars all the time. I'd learn the language too because it's nice. Though what I don't like is very strict conformity there and how being different is seen as being weird there, but tbh it's kinda the same everywhere nowadays. The politeness is good too but of course there is always someone who's gonna be rude every now and then for whatever reason.

Yeah. I walk in the winter and ride my bicycle after the snow melts. When you ride your bicycle it just makes you hate cars even more sometimes. Like when they park on the bike lane or path. Some cars even riding in it. Or big truck blocking the path completely. I swear sometimes I feel like everyone thinks the bike lane = free parking. Tbf that's not just cars, sometimes people walk in it even when there's a sidewalk next to it or they're with their friend taking the whole width of it and it just makes you want to run into them because they don't move out the way.

Most of those very bad drivers which are very common have years of riding cars btw. I think there is more to it. But a lot of people are getting fake licenses and some even drive without one. There is also a problem with the elderly driving cars when they shouldn't. Many cases of them being involved in accidents because they were not looking where they were going. Almost got run over by an old lady who was backup up and didn't see me even though you just couldn't miss me. I think a lot of people should just get tested again to see if they are apt to drive.

Nah. eww is good enough and does pretty much the same thing as links. And yeah I am using a frontend called snac on the fedi (it doesn't run any JavaScript). You could use it on eww or links just fine.

I use it all the time, its my browser of choice. It just doesn't support JavaScript. So I use palemoon as a second browser for JavaScript.

So many browser are either based on Firefox or Chrome. Its so bad that when you want to move away from them you can't because the other browsers are the same. So far I've been staying on Palemoon which is based on a very and version of Firefox, but it works fine. This is just for when I need JavaScript, ideally I don't wanna visit pages running JavaScript but sometimes I have no choice.

I don't like proprietary software, I hate it even. But I am not against someone using it. I just don't recommend it. Though I might recommend some non-free distro privately to someone looking to switch and they don't have all compatible hardware.

Yeah it is, unfortunately. They could be way smaller than they are now. I think one of the reason is that they ship with full desktop environments like GNOME and KDE. They just wanna try to cover the use case of as many users as possible. The best kind of distros really are the one where you just have your very minimal base system and you install your own packages on top of that.

I think they just think fascism is cool for some reason and don't know what it is. It sounds like that to me at least because so many of those people I see are all about freedom and don't like being told what to do and they especially hate censorship and not being allowed to say what they want while fascism is actually everything that they hate.

I think being against fascism is good, because there is never anything good about fascism. But also I see many anti-fascist who go too far and say hateful things about the people they hate. And any extremes people are exposed to will push those people to the other side. Because those people will think you are being unreasonable. It's like vegans, some of them cause a lot of chaos and in return people just make fun of them and eat meat in their face. Of course that's a pretty stupid thing to do, but that will be the average reaction from those people. I think wanting to have a civil debate about a cause in the best way.
