Hi there. A little callout before the weekend.
We're looking for someone versed well enough in legal structures such as Foundations and Associations in the Netherlands, to help us out with some advise regarding those.
If there is anyone in the Fedi or if you know anyone who could help us with some professional advise, please get in touch (free or paid).

Would say it's safe. I'm using it (muppeth). We just wated to be sure it works as expected and so gave it a month to make sure. With the upcoming update (first sunday of february we will most likely remove beta tag).
As for nextcloud password. We are not going to add it. One thing we try to avoid is providing duplicating features whenever possible. When deciding on password manager we checked number of options and decided that VaultWarden is the most safe and feature rich option. Nextcloud's password manage has number of issues and implementation problems (for example shared passwords are not encrypted etc), and so we decided to rather go for dedicated solution then going with nextcloud's. It would integrate nicely of course with other things, but the issues, unfinished features and confusion with password sharing, made us bet on VaultWarden instead.

Ok. looks like everyting is back online.
We need to check whether its the hardware failure or firmware or possibly RAM?
We are planning a big maintenance day in the beginning of january, which will include tasks like server's main OS update. Since that calls for a small hour or two downtime, it's good time to do firmware upgrades as well.

2025-12-16 18:42:54 UTC

And we have a christmas tree here 🤪

Email is back and xmpp should be coming back too. Webmail, webchat and the rest of the webservices shoud follow soon.
Looks like possible network interface hardware failure. We will need to check if the firmware update will solve or if we need to replace. Something to keep an eye on the coming days as it's second time this happen in last 4 months.

Due to a spike of outgoing spam we ended up on a blacklist from abusix, which causes some email delivery issues. We are trying to conain the outburst and asked to be delisted.
Sorry for that. Let's hope this will not be long.

Sorry for this mornings nextcloud downtime. @npub1vfr…mcck was not able to do the upgrade last night so he moved it to the morning. That said, we are finally running nextcloud 31 (aka hub 10). We still need to do some more maintenance which will cause downtime but we will schedule it for coming weekend.
We will do our best from now on to keep up with the update schedule on nextcloud and not let our instance stay behind so much.
Thank you for flying disroot!

2025-10-19 11:08:16 UTC

Tonight about 21:00 Amsterdam local time we will be commencing maintenance work on nextcloud. This operation might take about 1-2hours. During that time https://cloud.disroot.org will be unavailable.

Currently not. We were hoping to provide more of a discussion platform in form of forum. We did discourse instance but that did not live up to the initial idea (provide platform where users could easily create their own categories/forums). Now we try with Lemmy though lack of private groups is an issue. So not saying no, specially that some time ago the idea of providing simple mailinglist did pop up.
But can't give any ETA or even whehter it's something we all agree on doing.

2025-09-20 14:35:38 UTC

@npub1vfr…mcck Just brought the two Dell R420 from a gentelmen who was getting rid of bunch of the for 70 euro a pop \o/
Now we need to do some switchero of disks, cards, set things up figure out if we have compatible rack rails, and hopefully we wont have to reinstall OS.
This is a nice milestone as we finally decommission last Dell RX10. That means more quiet, faster and less power hungry servers. The addition of the two R420 will work nice for years to come as low priority servers like head-server for jbod or staging servers. Production is now a mix of R640 and R740

We switched now to Managane. What do you mean you can't see likes? as in the likes you have given or have gotten?

2025-09-18 15:37:08 UTC

For testing we switched frontend of our akkoma server to pl-fe by @mkljczk@fediverse.pl
Let us know if you like it and if we should keep it.
In https://fe.disroot.org/settings you can adjust colors and bunch of other stuff too :D

Sorry for that. the registration form is pretty bad but we are working on a replacement to be rolled out soon. For now though you just need to redo the process. Dont skip fileds and fill them up in order. once again apologies.

2025-09-07 07:37:55 UTC

Little update on the backup system for those following.
We just run some test backup runs on small datasets (privatebin) and seems like things are working. So the next day we will run data backups to new system and decommission the current backup server in the datacenter, which will be replaced with a staging server. \o/

2025-09-04 08:12:10 UTC

Time to go back to the backup system and implement it.
Last two weeks @npub1vfr…mcck has been exploring the idea of "Jak shaving" setting up new backup system.
It's so typical. The moment you start setting up stuff from scratch, it gives you opportunity to improve things. But once you start, the more layers you pill the more things there are to fix, improve and create. This video shows exactly what we mean: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrJUhtHdGQ8
That said, we are now past this point (we hope) and are moving on to the implementation. Very much looking forward to see how this experiment turns out as it will bring significant improvements to the entire setup long run.

# New file backup project
Recently we've been running out of storage on our backup server. This means additional monthly costs not to mention new hardware. So we decided it's a great moment to experiment with an idea of offsite backup. The idea is to build a little rack, with all the hardware we need. This way we aren't constrained to server size and can easily expand if needed. It's a nice playground to see what's possible for the future as well.
We are at the stage of gathering all needed components. Most important stuff is already here and the best thing of it all is that it all costed peanuts. Biggest expense will be of course disks needed for the storage.
We picked up a second hand 22U rack for 90euro and jbod 15disk bay chassis with controllers for 120. Once all the other components arrive it's time to set things up.
Its a nice spring project.

Just letting you know that we just enabled Tables on our nextcloud. Late, but its there :)

It's a result of some changes upstream which broke our theme. But we're on it so should be back at some point soon™

Yes we hope to roll out the update ASAP.

Yes. We've aware and annoyed with that as well. @npub1vfr…mcck said he will work on it coming days so hopefully this will get solved soon.

Thanks for information. Is it any specific language? Can you please send me over your username (via private message or email) I could disable (just award lot of points on spamassasin) to all emails addressed to you, but I need to know your address.

2025-02-18 05:43:34 UTC

- reply

At this moment it's not possible as the spam filtering is global. Could you either DM me here or send email to support@disroot.org message with the domains you get false positives from? If it's a mailinglist we need to manually add it to the whitelist as mailing lists often change message headers which then fails some of the checks (dmarc).

You can't change password using fe.disroot.org you need to use https://user.disroot.org as our akkoma uses centraled authentication system. Could you DM me your username perhaps something else if at play and I could see it in the logs?

should work. Make sure you use username and not username@disroot.org also if your username has dots replace them with underscore (eg. user.name user_name)

Hi,
It's a constant struggle with fighting spam and avoiding false-positives. This month we are planning to focus on that again and try to improve the situation.

Yes. though it's not e2ee as that would require encrypting email in transit between sender and recipient, but we are working on fully open source implementation of mailbox encryption: https://lacre.io it's using gpg so user only sends their public key to the server and all incoming emails are automatically encrypted. In fact we have just recently rolled it out on disroot for brave people who like living on the edge. So far it works fine.

Thanks a lot for recommending us. It's awesome to read positive feedback! We are very happy that we aren't the only ethical provider out there so there is quite some choice and people could pick small providers that suit their needs best.
We are currently working on new authentication system implementation that will provide global 2FA and passkeys for most services we offer. However the reality of email client implementation is another story. Currently only webmail (roundcube) and Fairemail (android) will allow for 2FA authentication all other native mailclients support 2FA (oAuth) only for the major corporate providers. Hopefully this will change in the future but for now, there choice of clients is very limited, while on xmpp non-existant.
That said we hope (as users) there will be some work done on clients to improve authentication mechanisms soon.

Just remove anyting that is there (like default files etc. and let me know what the username is. I will take care of the rest for you.

The issue is caused by you either resting password or updating password. If you jsut updated the password you should follow this short tutorial: https://howto.disroot.org/en/tutorials/user/account/administration/password
This should get your new password updated and you should be good to go. However if you reset the password it means you no longer know the old one, and so all uploaded files cannot be decrypted anymore. That means you will need to:
1. Remove all the files (so not calendars, contacts etc but just files)
2. Empty trash
3. Get back to us via mastodon or support ticket so we can go ahead and wipe the current cenryption key pair. New pair will be re-created upon login.

# 🌍 🌓 DisNews 24.12 - Happy Solstice
Happy solstice everyone!
We wish you a warm, bright, and happy solstice. Whether it is the longest or the shortest night of the year for you, we hope you make the best out of it and enjoy this astronomical event and celebration of seasonal change.
"From Hobby to Mission: Disroot Needs You!"
What happens when your hobby project becomes essential to thousands of people? It's no longer just a hobby. This year, we've realized Disroot is at a turning point. The project has grown beyond what we can maintain in our free time with duct tape and determination alone.
That's why we've started financially compensating muppeth with €1,000 per month, with the goal of increasing this gradually — through your donations — until we can pay full-time work on Disroot. This is a critical step to securing the project's future.
But here's the challenge: we're falling short of this year's financial target. Even worse, we're unable to support the open-source projects we rely on as much as we used to. While donations have increased since 2020, the number of supporters has stayed the same. To all of you loyal contributors, thank you — you've kept us going! 🙏
However, we need more people to join. Small contributions make a big difference when more people chip in! If you value the services we provide and haven't started supporting yet, now is the time to act. Together, we can sustain a real alternative to big tech services (where you are the product).
🎉 Bonus: Support us and ask for stickers to show your love for Disroot in real life! Let's make the future of Disroot brighter, together. 💪
👉 Feel free to share this post and help us spread the word!

# Disnews 24.11 - Lacre open beta
We are happy to announce we enter a next phase of Lacre testing (end to end mailbox encryption). From now on you could send your public keys to enable it on disroot.org. It's still early times so consider it only when you know one or two things about GnuPG/PGP.

We used to provide news with nextcloud (rss reader), but due to abuse (more like litter) of the service we have stopped it. 99% of news were unread just taking space on the server (we were pulling like 2 or 3 million news items a week), and it was just waste of resources. Some people were subscribed to like 20k news feeds which is impossible for an individual to read. So, since there is plenty of offline solutions, and its so easy to just export your news feed list and keep things in sync across multiple devices, we se no reason why an online rss-feed reader would be needed.

As we have been dealing with stability issue on our XMPP server for some days, if you experience any connectivity issues, please do ping us via email (support@) or on fedi. We hope the issue is contained atm but could be it isn't.
We suspect it has to do with flooding certain MUC's with presence stanza when room is bridged to Matrix room via bifrost. Especially large inflated matrix rooms with thousands of inactive (but present in the room) users. Seems to be specially bad when additionally room is bridged to telegram and others.
So keep us posted if things are weird, we are keeping an eye and hope to work out some solution next week if issue comes back

You can set things on searc without logging in. in fact you cant login to searx. the settings are saved in your browser cokkies. So good to scroll through them or send some screenshots to support@disroot.org (email) with settings as well as some search results and queries so we could try to reproduce.

Thanks a lot for donating. I apreaciate a lot your contribution. I wonder how exaclty it provides bad results. I (@npub1vfr…mcck) use searx as my daily driver and pretty much have no problems. So perhaps it's some setting you did or specific language results that create issues. Would be good to look into it and see if there is an issue to fix. Hit us up via email on support@disroot.org or DM here on fedi to try and get to the bottom of things.

There are major differences.
Akkoma uses ActivityPub protocol while movim XMPP currently both are incompatible.
The intention to use movim was to primarily provide solution to webchat for xmpp (which movim offers) rather then the social media part. That said, I've created ticket about whether to disable social network part of movim and keep only the chat part: https://git.disroot.org/Disroot/Disroot-Project/issues/1037

The great thing about federation is that you have a choice of your provider and can pick what suits you best. It also allows for different approaches on how to handle user data, their financing or the way the service is run. The beauty of diversity.
