There are major differences.
Akkoma uses ActivityPub protocol while movim XMPP currently both are incompatible.
The intention to use movim was to primarily provide solution to webchat for xmpp (which movim offers) rather then the social media part. That said, I've created ticket about whether to disable social network part of movim and keep only the chat part: https://git.disroot.org/Disroot/Disroot-Project/issues/1037
