without auth, relays can't control access to this information and with clients not being selective by using nip-65 in/outbox lists people basically just aren't using DMs for anything, which is why we keep hearing so much about telegram and simplex
just because people can run honeypot/surveillance relays doesn't mean that serious and honorable people will not strictly respect the privacy and confidentiality of their users' metadata
so long as clients don't handle DMs with more care nostr is gonna suck for DMs and that is a major pain point for adoption

the inbox/outbox functionality works beautifully, nostrudel is my go-to client these days, my only issue with it is the amount of use of lines instead of solid color in the layout, and maybe the text is a bit high contrast in dark mode
but i understand the struggle of building clients, so easy to try to satisfy too many and end up making a mess, complexity explodes fast with UI, and it is the enemy of stability and maintainability

if you really are that worried about the network correlating an npub to an ip address you just use tor
avoiding associating an npub to an IP address by not signing is not helpful to actual relay service provision, and from an infosec perspective does not really have any impact on surveillance being done on you, because to a spook, 99% certainty is good enough, they are logging IP addresses and reqs anyway, in order to map out the social graph
requiring auth is a relay's decision, and a user does not have to use the relay, and a client dev should not force users to use a relay either, this is one of the things that really grinds my gears about a lot of nostr clients, they just run off and make reqs to all and sundry without even thinking about the consequences
fair enough don't auth to a relay you don't trust, but if the relay demands auth, then don't use it, simple as that
don't take that option out of the hands of the user because there is good reasons why relays might want to give more service to "legitimate" free users as well

so, after some further fixing of realy's auth handling i'm quite sure i have it right but mixed results and seems like actually nobody in client dev land has actually implemented fully working auth
or at least, maybe more exact, the way that auth is implemented as an additional module on strfry relays is not fully correct, and these clients work with that but it is not strict by the protocol
annoying, but just confirms that for my work i really need to have a client dev working closely with me in order to get this part right for a commercially viable nostr-based system
i also have some other gigs going on but i'm just gonna put this auth problem to one side after today for a while again, just fiddle with another few knobs that i might have missed and then move on to important stuff like the import/export feature i have been cooking up

next.nostrudel.ninja is not responding correctly to a CLOSED "auth-required" message on these three relays, i am just checking this and coracle now auths every time with the auth flow correctly structured according to nip-42 but nostrudel is not sending back an auth unless you open up the task manager and manually click the auth
my suspicion is that the other two relays there are also running teh same flow, so i think your code is not correctly handling... and the naive assumption is that "always" means it always responds with an auth response every time it receives an auth envelope, which it clearly doesn't even with the CLOSED "auth-required" message
would be great if this was fully working to spec
just a side note, i've set up an "auth requested" flag in my websocket library now, so it only ever sends one per websocket connection... previously it was hammering the client with requests for the multiple req envelopes it was receiving, which i don't think is correct either, one socket, one auth, that is how the protocol is described, so i've made it so... i think that if it's done so that each one makes an auth request and each auth request generates a new auth challenge each time there is race conditions, and it's just unnecessary traffic... right answer or silence, is my philosophy
in any case, please alter nostrudel's auth handling so it takes the CLOSED auth-required message as a prompt to auth, as it is specified in nip-42

so, now that i can see nostr, bluesky :bluesky: and farcaster 💨 events streaming alongside each other i can make a couple of observations
bluesky is clearly the most active of the three, its outnumber nostr about 3:1 and farcaster 2:1
most of the events on farcaster are likes, and the actual posts themselves, looks like mostly vietnamese, korean, english and russian in about that order of relative frequency, and of the ones in english, 3 out of 4 refer to cryptocurrency in some way, probably it's not so different in the other languages too though it sorta seems like maybe the vietnamese actually have conversations about somethin else than crypto (i didn't bother to translate them, just the lack of crypto dogwhistle words which are probably rendered in english as they are in most languages)
farcaster is definitely primarily a firehose of crypto pump chatter, and very little actual social
bluesky is a lot more varied, sorta similar breakdown in content to what you see on mastodon, probably similar people and probably a lot of overlap between them
nostr has the highest ratio of actual social content and the subject matter is highly varied, though yes bitcoin pops up a lot... definitely nostriches write more original content
mostly anecdotal observations of course, i'm not gonna write a frickin academic paper and do analytics on it, that's just what has caught my eye

i am pretty sure envs can be hundreds of elements, they are normally a lot, i believe they are stored in a kind of VFS
anyhow, part of the reason why it is a good place to use, other than the fact that they come free with OSs of all types, so it's universal, is that it lets you separate the deployment from the app more easily... and you can ship configurations out to multiple devices just by scp'ing some simple text files
as for the typing... all forms of configuration fundamentally are based on human entered strings, or at least copypasta strings
if the field is not correctly marshaled then it doesn't evaluate to the app and the default value will override

not sure why it doesn't exist because it's so simple, but using https://github.com/go-simple/env i've created a really simple config system that you can:
- get a list of parameters with "help" "-h" and most of the other common help flags
- automatically looks for a `.env` file where it is configured to store data, which can be overridden using environment (this is a chicken and egg problem with flags)
- can have parameters specified in the command line, but not recommended, by use of prefix (better to put into `.env` file or use "export" or "set" whatever your shell uses for security reasons) - i intend to later be able to manually set a relay nsec for the chatbot, best to do this with the environment anyway, as kernel process command lines can otherwise leak this info to unprivileged processes in the same namespace
i've spent many an hour of my life fucking around with stupid flag libraries and configuration file parsers and for what end?
still probably not fixed - LND and BTCD both have problems whereby config files are not actually parsing some of the fields, and you have to set them in the command line, wtf
with this scheme it's dead simple, it's built into the OS (even windows has this shit), the "parser" for the env file literally just splits the file by line breaks, then by equals `=` and trims excess space off everything and this then stands in place of the OS reader so you can make a config file that is just KEY=VALUE one per line, also dead simple, also can be even imported by the shell upon launch of the application instead of using this very simple feature i just wrote in like half an hour
that's it, the end, no more features for this part of my relay now, and you will be happy (because you can make your own extra nicknacks for this, mostly following along the same style as fiatjaf/relayer, though using a faster, binary-string oriented nostr codec library that is much much faster, and a binary encoder for the database that is the fastest existing
mainly also because it's the simplest, also, just like this config system
simple > featureful
simple > expressive
plaintext > binary (isn't that why nostr uses JSON tho?)

yeah, but the bit i don't get is that you are going to get garbage looking for posts from an npub if you don't constrain that to the pubkey field, any and all kinds of garbage
isn't the whole point of the searching of a follow's relay lists to find THEIR posts?
then you should not be putting that npub into a #p tag in the filter

no, that is why coracle shows replyguy and nostrudel doesn't currently, if you haven't got replyguy relays on your list (as i do)
i don't think that searching other people's relay lists was the point of NIP-65, rather, it was about decentralization - ie, if client reads from inbox and posts to outbox then other clients can read that user's events from users outbox and post to users inbox
you aren't alone in having this confusion, this assumption is baked into how #coracle looks for posts and why even though i have no primal or damus relays i see replyguy on coracle (and i've stopped using it again because of this)
@npub1jlr…ynqn maybe an idea for how to avoid pulling replyguy events is to only look for events with pubkey of follow user not for tags containing it as well, this eliminates getting replyguy replies when you search a follow's posts on follows relay lists (app and in/outbox both)

yeah, it's far from too expensive but at the same time as you probably know lightning payments use a source-onion-routed protocol and only timing info is visible to intermediate LN nodes, and many ecom operators are running tehir own LN infra like btcpayserver, i was using a VPS with this some time back, and have used several others as well, so it really is confidential between customer and vendor
when you say 0.03% is that by volume (sum of the sats value) or by individual transactions, because individual transactions are where the onchain fees come from, not the volume (leaving aside the cost of transactions with large number of component UTXOs)
if it's by volume then darthcoin the lightning maniac is right about that because he means transaction count
i dunno about any stats on the actual utilization of LN in terms of volume, i've got some beefs with the entire protocol over the matter of channel balance being opaque and this being the main cause of routing failures (especially combined with shitty routing nodes running on flaky ADSL connections in the middle of Australia and shit
