Building off of these, next up is Brain Training.
Many companies provide online brain training including Posit Science, Lumosity, Dakim, and Cogstate among others. They’re usually computer-based games aimed to challenge the brain and thus improve cognitive function. Just like we exercise and train our muscles to get stronger and fitter, these brain training programs aim to strengthen the muscle right between our ears. But do they work?
What these brain training programs are targeting is the stimulation of an ability the brain has called Neuroplasticity.
What is Neuroplasticity?
Neuroplasticity is the ability for neural networks in the brain and nervous system to change, adapt, grow and reorganize themselves - the ability for the brain to rewire itself from how it previously functioned, and thus become stronger and more resilient.
We all have the ability to make our brains more “plastic” as neuroscientists call it – the ability to make it more flexible and resilient. We’ve seen cases of people making remarkable recoveries from strokes and traumatic brain injuries where a lot of brain tissue has become damaged or died off, yet they make full recoveries because the neurons remaining reorganize themselves to take on the responsibilities the complete brain once had. Just like this power of neuroplasticity can be used to come back from injury or disease, it can also be harnessed to proactively strengthen and shield itself from these types of threats. Some great examples of brain exercises that stimulate neuroplasticity are:
• Playing an instrument and making music
• Dancing
• Learning a new language
• Making art
• Exercising
• Meditating
• Gardening
• Crafting and building things
• Taking on projects that challenge ourselves and push us outside our comfort zones
• And Brain Training games

One of the main reasons they all have such a profound effect on cognitive health is because they all greatly help prevent and reverse Insulin Resistance and promote Insulin Sensitivity when optimized.
There are different types of stress. The kind of temporary stress we deliberately put on ourselves when we are exercising or taking on a new challenge that excites us is one that can stimulate healthy growth and adaptation within us. But the stress Dr. Bredesen is referring to is the kind that most of us think of when we say the words, “I’m stressed.”
It's running the system at a level beyond where it was meant to operate for too long. As Dr. Bredesen says, we humans, did not evolve to lead the lives many lead – lives of sugar-laden diets, late nights with incandescent lights, constant anxiety about work, poor sleep, poor nutrition, and exposure to hundreds of toxic chemicals, to name a few of the stressors pummeling our brains and bodies.
We evolved to confront intermittent stress, deal with it and move on. Not to be under a constant continuous stress loop. Apart from the negative and unpleasant feelings and emotions that accompany a stressed out state, this constant stress increases our levels of the hormone Cortisol and keeps them elevated for too long...

When it comes to sleep, especially as Americans, we’ve developed an interesting relationship with it. As Dr. Bredesen says, “it has become a badge of courage to work late into the night.” In the book, he recounts his time as an intern and resident in medicine and neurology, where he was basically sleep deprived for five full years. He regularly stayed up for more than 40 hours at a stretch. What he felt throughout that time was that his reactions had slowed, his judgement impaired, his stress levels never abated and he would fall asleep at the drop of a hat, a few times even while evaluating patients. Once he finished his residency, after a few weeks of regular existence, he felt like a fog had lifted and his thinking became clearer once again.
Dr. Bredesen has another story to reinforce how indispensable optimal sleep is for preventing and reversing cognitive decline: years ago he had been talking to a behavioral neurologist who was another expert in Alzheimer’s disease evaluation and clinical research. They were talking about how peculiar it was that some patients diagnosed with Mild Cognitive Impairment seemed to improve, while most would go on to develop Alzheimer’s. When asked whether she saw any differences between those who continued to decline and those who improved, she answered: the ones who got good sleep tended to improve.
So these are Dr. Bredesen’s three key principles for optimizing sleep...

Dr. Bredesen’s team has seen that regular exercise, when combined with Ketoflex 12/3, can really have a strong amplification effect on the rest of the protocol’s positive results within the body and brain.
As Dr. Bredesen says: “sitting is the new smoking!” More and more we are often leading our lives sitting at computers, sitting in class, sitting in movies, sitting in our cars, sitting in meetings, sitting on the couch watching television or scrolling on our phones. We are sitting ourselves to death!
Plenty of research studies over the years have shown not only how beneficial regular exercise is to our cognitive and physical (especially cardiovascular) health, but also how damaging sedentary lifestyles can be.
Sedentary lifestyles promote all chronic diseases. When we don’t move our body and promote circulation, we are going to stagnate, which isn’t conducive to optimal health or healing.
It’s only very recently we’ve, as a society, started sitting for so much of our day. We are meant to move our bodies. We feel better, healthier and stronger when we do it consistently. We’re happier and can show up as the best version of ourselves.

ReCODE is a personalized program that is tailored to how every patient tests on individualized evaluations. The first testing phase to screen for all of the risk factors that contribute to cognitive health and decline is what Dr. Bredesen calls the Cognoscopy.
The best medical professional to help you order all of these tests, interpret them for you and build a personalized protocol for prevention or reversal is going to be a Bredesen-trained and certified MD. They’re not on every corner yet, but as awareness grows and more practitioners train, they are becoming more accessible. You’re going to want a seasoned medical professional managing this protocol and having a collaborative relationship with you. When we started with my dad, this is what we did, and we were fortunately able to find a Bredesen-trained MD not too far from us and started the protocol. Dr. Bredesen has a practioner locator tool on his website to see who in your area is Bredesen-trained and certified. I’ll be linking this tool down in the description below so you can check in your area.
In my experience, if you can’t find a Bredesen-trained doctor, your, second best option is working with a Functional Medicine MD. The Functional medicine approach goes beyond just treating the diagnosis by managing symptoms and aims to identify root causes. A doctor trained and certified in functional medicine will take the diagnosis, evaluate symptoms and then start collecting more information to get to the root cause of the symptoms. Once the root cause or causes are found, they treat to resolve these so symptoms resolve and in many cases disease, dysfunction and diagnoses are reversed.
Another alternative way to do this is to use the doctor that you already have a great working relationship with. If you have a primary, neurologist or another specialist you’ve had a positive relationship with, bring this book into their office and ask if they can help you start gathering some of this lab marker data. These are still early days for the Bredesen Protocol and not everyone is up on these studies so you may find that receptiveness to this approach may vary. But it’s worth bringing it up, it’s your health.
