Sayegh, Fayez A. Zionist colonialism in Palestine. Research Center, Palestine Liberation Organization, 1965.
Fayez Abdullah Sayegh (1922-1980) achieved his most significant diplomatic victory on November 10, 1975, when, as Kuwait's delegate, he co-authored and presented UN General Assembly Resolution #3379, which determined Zionism to be "a form of racism and racial discrimination."
This resolution represented the culmination of his lifelong intellectual and diplomatic work challenging Zionist colonialism, though it was later revoked in 1991 as a precondition for Israel's participation in the Madrid Conference.
He was born in Syria to a Presbyterian minister, and earned is PhD in philosophy from Georgetown University. He taught at major institutions including Yale and Stanford before founding the #PLO Research Center in 1965 and serving on its Executive Committee.
His analysis of Zionism, most systematically presented in "Zionist Colonialism in Palestine" (1965), distinguished the Zionist project from other European colonial movements by emphasizing its unique features: racial self-segregation, fundamental rejection of any coexistence with indigenous populations, unbending drive toward territorial expansion, and reliance on structural violence to achieve its goals. He argued these characteristics were "congenial, essential and permanent" rather than temporary tactics, making Zionist settler colonialism incompatible with Palestinian existence and posing a broader threat to regional stability and anti-colonial movements worldwide.

While condemning chants against the IDF (Bob Vylan led chants of 'Death, death to the IDF' during their set at Glastonbury) and criticizing settler violence in the occupied West Bank, health secretary seem to be deliberately ignoring #IDF’s systematic execution of unarmed Palestinians waiting for food aid in Gaza. His call for Israel to “get its own house in order” is somewhat cynical if not grotesque when measured against “Operation Salted Fish”—where Israeli soldiers were reported to have deliberately fired artillery and mortars at starving civilians, killing hundreds, in what one soldier called “a killing field.”
Like many Western politicians Streeting has mastered the art if compartmentalized condemnation which enables ongoing atrocities by focusing on peripheral violence, while refusing to name the core problem, which is the brutality of #Israel’s death machine which the UK and other Western countries enable.

Majadli discusses how Israel's Education Minister Yoav Kish disqualified Professor Eva Illouz from receiving the Israel Prize due to what he called her "anti-Israeli ideology." The reason cited was her 2021 participation in a petition to the International Criminal Court in The Hague requesting an investigation into whether Israel committed war crimes in the West Bank.
In response to this disqualification, Illouz stated to Haaretz: "During the last 18 months, I dedicated my energy to writing for the international press with the aspiration to defend Israel. In the most prestigious newspapers in Spain, France, and Germany, I never stopped clarifying that Hamas is a terrorist organization, that Israel had the right to respond to a ground invasion of its territory, that anti-Zionism is an expression of antisemitism, and that the accusations of genocide against it are nothing but a continuation of antisemitic discourse."
Majadli criticizes Illouz for having been a "loyal mouthpiece for the most right-wing Israeli propaganda" for a year and a half, only to be rejected by the state she defended. Majadli argues that there is little difference between Illouz's response to the war and that of any standard Zionist leftist in Israel.
She says that Illouz and other Zionist intellectuals who identify as leftists were focusing on "deciphering esoteric shades of antisemitism in the global left" while diverting attention from the violence being carried out in Gaza. She suggests that Illouz could have gained more respect by refusing any prize from a state that killed tens of thousands civilians in Gaza.
Majadli wonders when will the academic community understand that the "Israel Prize" is not a badge of honor but a mark of disgrace, and characterizes Illouz as symbolizing "the ongoing failure of the Zionist left to understand the State of Israel as it truly is, and not as they would like it to be."

Israel's strategic deployment of cultural representation in the face of allegations of genocide is relentless. While facing #ICJ investigation and scholarly condemnation of a genocide that has resulted in over 46,000 Palestinians deliberately and systematically murdered by the #IDF (using U.S.-supplied weaponry,) Israel's Eurovision participation—featuring a survivor of the October 7 attack—is attempting, once again, to instrumentalize personal victimhood in service of state legitimation.
It’s difficult to ignore the fact that this centering of Israeli suffering within international cultural forums occurs simultaneously with the systematic marginalization of Palestinian perspectives and experiences. The disproportionate media attention given to Israel's Eurovision candidacy, relative to, say, coverage of ongoing genocide in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, not to mention a brutal occupation, reflects broader patterns of narrative control that obscure accountability for actions against an occupied population.
As one Israeli commentator wrote, “the song written for her [Yuval Abraham] by Keren Peles lacks even a trace of originality and freshness, resembling something more on the level of a young talent night at an unpopular brasserie - and conveys an oppressive sense of extra effort to be appealing.[…] And if that doesn't help either, one can always say that the problem isn't the lyrics, the melody, the French, the clip, the Keren, or the Peles: in the end, everyone is antisemitic.

The Israeli Knesset has advanced two controversial pieces of legislation. The first, approved in a preliminary reading, would impose a five-year prison sentence on anyone, including citizens, public bodies, and organizations, who "provides services" or "makes resources available" to the #ICC in The Hague. The burden of proof would be on the accused to demonstrate they were unaware their actions aided the ICC. Legal experts warn this could even apply to sharing social media posts of potential war crimes.
[…] Dr. Tamar Megiddo, an expert in international law, warns that "the definitions of this dangerous bill are so broad that even someone who shares a photo or video on social media of a soldier documenting himself committing what appears to be a war crime is exposed to imprisonment." I didn’t read the rest of Shalev’s tirade but the premise of Israel’s revenge war on Gaza *IS* the memory of the holocaust (i.e never again, though they briefly tested the waters with Hamas-ISIS) as if Hamas was able or going to exterminate all the Jews in Palestine. The rhetoric around Arabs and Nazis started already with Ben Gurion. When Begin evoked it drew a considerable amount of objection from survivors and family for the diminishing of the memory of the holocaust. Then came war criminal Netanyahu and claimed the final solution was the idea of the Mufti of Jerusalem. Talking about context, that’s literal holocaust denialism. Weaponizing the holocaust is definitely not new and Israeli politicians and media are definitely the worst in that respect.
BTW I’m sure you’re familiar with Friedlander’s
“kitsch and death” about the cultural representations of the holocaust . The use of these images on social media in the way you describe would definitely be of interest (the book was published in 1982). Though other than a fig leaf for Israel’s relentless crimes against humanity (since 1948), it’s a phenomenon that existed possibly also irrespectively.

Israeli forces briefly detained Italian activist Luisa Morgantini, former Vice President of the European Parliament, and journalist Roberto Bongiorni in Tuba, near #Hebron in the occupied West Bank, for allegedly entering a "military zone."
They were taken to a police station in the Kiryat Arba settlement but were released shortly after due to intervention by the Italian embassy and consulate. Morgantini, a prominent figure in the Italian peace movement and co-founder of Women in Black Italy, was in the in the context of her peace activism.

#US / ADL condemns Musk's Nazi jokes after Initial defense of his Nazi salut and following Jewish groups exodus from X
Following an exodus of Jewish organizations from X due to rising #antisemitism under Elon #Musk's ownership, the Anti-Defamation League (#ADL) condemned Musk for making light of the Holocaust with Nazi-related jokes. The ADL’s about-face occurred just days after it initially defended Musk's controversial gesture at an inauguration event, downplaying comparisons to a Nazi salute and urging for “understanding”.
However, Musk's subsequent Nazi-referencing puns, made in response to criticism, prompted the ADL to issue a statement asserting that such jokes trivialize the #Holocaust, diminish the suffering of victims, and insult the memory of those murdered.
Yet, the ADL has not acknowledged #Israel's genocide in Gaza, and disturbingly, continues to ignore the weaponizing of the Holocaust to justify Israel's actions.

#Ireland / Israeli protestors walkout from a Holocaust Memorial speech in Dublin
Protests erupted at a Holocaust Memorial Day event in Dublin when Irish President Michael D. Higgins mentioned the #Gaza conflict in his speech, calling for a ceasefire. An Israeli woman was forcibly removed, and other attendees walked out or turned their backs in protest, citing concerns about #antisemitism and disagreement with Higgins' remarks on Gaza.
What did Higgins say that was so offensive? To be fair I’m not sure. This occurred after some Jewish community representatives had requested Higgins not to speak due to his critical views on Israeli actions in Gaza.
In his speech he expressed his hope that both Israeli families bereaved by the October 7th events and those affected by the violence in Gaza, including those killed in "the rubble of Gaza" and those awaiting the release of hostages, would welcome a "long-overdue ceasefire".
Is it truly outrageous for President Higgins to use Holocaust Memorial Day to remind us of the face of evil? And why do Israeli and Jewish organizations seem less disturbed by #Musk's "Sieg Heil" than by Higgins' plea for humanity?
Approximately 500 people attended the ceremony and most stayed until the end.

As of December 1, 2024, 43 journalists were detained in Israel compared to 50 in China and 30 in Russia. Many of the detained journalists in Israel/Palestine are held under administrative detention without formal charges, a practice criticized for violating international human rights law and aimed at suppressing coverage of Israeli actions, particularly in #Gaza.
