Summer's winding down, at least the intense harvesting part (other than allll the apples). Think I'm done with cherry tomatoes in general, need to find a nice medium sized red next year. Nice first year harvest of skullcap and hops and just enough green beans left for my lunch. In the garden for fall: Italian dandelion greens, bok choi, arugula, purslane, mizuna, miner's, carrots, collards, beets, snow peas....

Boo boo salve for the year, made with calendula, plantain, and yarrow with lemongrass and lavender essential oils. Such a rich green color and scent!
And yeah last year I named it "wound salve" to make it more man-friendly 😅 but females seem to use, appreciate, and set the healthy living tone in my area and they and their kids love the "boo boo" 😁
My recipe is simple:
1 cup infused herbal oil to 1 oz beeswax (and 6-10 drops of eo per ounce so it's light enough for the littles among us).
And. I added (I hope) a different wallet so IF I did things right I should be zappable and zappalotable. I guess we'll find out!

Garlic is cured and in. Next stop: separating cloves and beginning the drying and powdering process. I find making homegrown garlic powder so rewarding!

Good reading and finishing up a wee baby blanket. Got the first garden bed turned over for fall planting. This year, drip irrigation went in; hopefully next year we can fence out the deer (currently I cover everything at dusk). First look at the bioreactor compost after a year and it's not bad but definitely not fine yet (still useable). Oh, and here's another look at why it's better to grow/raise your own food/medicine. On the left is chamomile I buy from a very respected and reputable herb source...on the right is my own, dehydrated. Which would you prefer?
P.S. Chatting with Alby tomorrow--we'll see if I can get everything sorted out 🤷‍♀️

Harvested chamomile and lavender last few days; maybe that's why I feel super relaxed 😅 Some of the onions are bolting 😕 so are getting pulled early-ish, but the garlic looks strong and I can't wait to pull them in a few weeks. Calendula is next!

Tis time for harvesting and preparing St John's wort. I love it for the oil but also as a tincture during the winter blended with lemon balm for when I need a boost of "sunshine".

And purple sprouting broccoli is delicious. I love that I can just snip off spears as needed and they just regrow (unlike harvesting a whole head of broccoli). Would love to find a cauliflower-like that.

Welp I right out stumped the online support with regards to my zap-nonzap and they say I need further help 😂 I don't know if all this is due to my own ignorance (99.99% likely) or if there's something else. Maybe it's just God saying, "NOPE for you!"
Anyhow, isn't this honeysuckle gorgeous? Did you know honeysuckle is helpful for those summer colds? Dehydrate some of them and save for an infusion when needed. If you can get your hands on some Chinese crysanthemum to grow (try Strictly Medicinal) you'd have a good traditional blend.

The harvest is on, blanching/freezing a large batch of purple sprouting broccoli. I'm behind, especially with the herbs 😫. I need a room sized dehydrator this time of year!

Cleavers are growing around here. They're edible, high in vitamin C and silica; I like them chopped and added to soups. The leaves are also useful for the lymphatic system. Out in the field, it's useful for sunburns or fresh wounds--just don't use too hot of water to infuse them into before making a compress and of course if you're dealing with a burn, let the infusion cool down (a lot!) first.
Second pick are greens picked both from the garden and the field. I thank God for all the food growing all around me!

Got comfrey? One of the many medicinal and nutritive plants to be grown on the homestead used both for leaf and root.
It's true that comfrey contains varying amounts of PA's (the root more so) and thus might seriously harm some folks with liver damage (especially with long term use), but skeptical herbalists disagree about tossing out hundreds of years of effective, traditional use. I suggest doing your own study and/or working with a clinical herbalist before using any herb internally. Comfrey is one of many on the regulatory agencies list to be cautious with.

I'm so thankful for the home garden. Lots to eat already, and more on the way, Lord willing (please keep the deer away). I'm hoping this will be the year to put in a drip, although spending time in nature with a watering wand isn't a bad use of time. This year I'll be experimenting with letting my favorite salad greens go to seed to save them. I've never done that. But once upon a time, I'd never kept a garden, either.

Meanwhile, here are some walking Egyptian onions. This is year two. First of all, green onions forever more. The small bulblet onions set on top, which you can totally eat of course, but once they are heavy enough will brings the stalks to the ground where they will root and grow another plant, thus "walking". You could also divide the plant and grow them elsewhere in your garden. Another great plant for your perennial garden!

Here's some fresh salad from the garden. Just looking at it makes me feel better.
Now, before I lose all hope in participating in BTC please help me!
I am *trying* to link a wallet with #alby. I even bought the $36 annual fee Hub (stupidly with my wallet instead of a cc but I didn't notice until it was too late and I think I fixed that but it's too late for the initial and argh!).
I am on a vicious loop in Alby that keeps sending me to "link to your own wallet" (which I hit)...then I hit the "pro cloud/pro" which tells me I now HAVE a current plan....and then....nowhere do I connect?...back to "link to your own wallet"....again and again 😖😫
I find this whole process incredibly non-intuitive and difficult.
HOW do I now connect everything to reestablish my ability to send and receive zaps again?
If any of you professionals (ie. you know what you're doing) really want to grow this thing, it would be helpful to offer in person help/classes through the library or parks n rec, that sort of thing.
I bet there are a LOT of people like me who Just Can't Get It (but want to) 🫣

I invested in a Light Phone to help me opt out of having a smartphone that makes me feel stupider every day. All this does for me is text and call. I didn't even add the extras such as directions, because I miss having good directional sense. I still have my SIMless smartphone at home on wifi for apps (such as this one), but slowly I am peeling those away either onto my desktop or to analog. So far, my favorite is to be out and about and to make contact and communication with other people who aren't nose down into their phones. Nice little tool, so far.

Lovage is a great garden addition for both culinary (strong celery flavoring) and medicinal (a warming diuretic for cases such as edema or UTI) purposes. Worth researching if you haven't met this humble plant IMO.
Growing medicine in my garden makes me happy.

The sun finally showed up and I am happy to see it ☀️
Also happy to have the garden mostly planted; here's hoping the deer will continue to avoid the buffet while better fencing gets installed this year. My scrappy use-up-extra-yarn sweater is coming along, and now that the planting is in a good place perhaps I can finish it. I took some time to fly away with some friends, which was fun (highly recommend, if you can do it).
Meanwhile, I've been making some changes. Like trading my smartphone for a Light Phone, and my desktop computer for a Daylight. My daughters and I are challenging each other to read an entire book every two weeks, and I'm loving that as my "reading" had become lazy due to the screen-scrolling kind. Also closing up my online client clinical herbalist practice, and choosing to keep my handful of local see-in-person clients instead.
It's mostly a slow-go spring endeavoring towards an even more slow-go livestyle, and I'm happy with that pace thus far 🌿

Nettle's up, oh happy spring! That means it's time for me to get my green starts outside, another measure of happiness. I left my lemon verbena out all winter and even my chopped down celery. It all survived, even the celery (!) and is making a come back. Can't wait to check out my bioreactor compost later this summer after its yearlong stew.

Back when I was a young woman, I kept bees for a season. I didn't have an extractor so I just made due. I think about doing this again but sometimes it's the whole "starting over from scratch" that gets in the way.
Anyhooo. I think I fixed the Alby zap thing by logging in. Maybe? It's giving me an option to connect my wallet to it. Yes? Good idea?
Oy, this learning curve. Keeping bees was easier.

Making an blend of honeysuckle, chrysanthemum, echinacea and elderflower for someone with a lingering cold. And marmalade, just because I love it so much in the winter 🍊Meanwhile, the kids are doing an art project and I'm giving myself permission later this afternoon to sit and do nothing except knit knit knit and watch a movie with them all. I think running around nonstop does nothing to keep those colds from settling in so I'd rather just avoid them to begin with.

It's really important to understand herbs do go bad over time, even if you store them in a dry, dark place. This is the same herb (gotu kola, if you must know): on the left is over a year old. On the right is a fresh order. Granted they're from two different sources, but I think time and deterioration is the main take away. I've been spending way too much time indoors. It's not how I want to live, but the overcast damp and chill keeps me inside other than for short walks. I recently watched a young woodpecker make its way up a cedar tree, and that was worth the trouble of bundling up. So apparently my wallet (Alby) isn't working but I only know about it because some very kind zappers told me (thank you!!)
When I look at my wallet, it says it is online with a working address.
I could disconnect it. But what happens to the sats already there? (there's not a lot, I just want to be educated)
And if not Alby...then what? 🤔
Is there a tutorial anywhere?
This is all such a steep learning curve for me 🤯🤪

We are getting ready to bust this 40+ year old cabinet off the wall and put in some nicer open shelving and perhaps a window. I cannot wait to see this come down!
While emptying the shelves, I had a mad dash of inspiration and threw away all of my supplements. I've been taking supplements of one kind or another, even herbs in capsules, for decades. I decided to see how I'd feel NOT taking them, but instead drinking and eating all of my nutrients instead. I know: what a revelation 🙄. I was actually grossed out by the amount of pills and tablets and capsules in the small sack I filled. This is not Real Food! 🤦‍♀️

ha! Yes! Are you familiar with Tasha Tudor? She grew her own flax, spun and wove it into cloth, then sewed up her own shirt (by hand would be my guess). As I recall, once was enough for her 😅

I do miss weaving.
I quit just as we moved in here, this cabin in the woods. A very enthusiastic young lady took my loom and generous supplies. She said she'd send a photo of it set up, but nothing ever showed.
Now I have empty pastures waiting for...something. Maybe this time, I start with sheep, then rebuy a spinning wheel, then refind a workhorse loom...
Or...just find a small house in Mexico and spend my days riding my horse around in the sunshine foraging herbs for my apothecary.

Elizabeth Zimmerman taught me (via video) how to knit, and I've made scarves, hats, fingerless gloves and sweaters. Her books are still available, and of course there isn't anything you can't learn via YouTube.
The real danger is falling into the rabbit hole of finding good fabric (please not Joanne's just no), then deciding to just weave your own.... 🤪

You can find companies that specialize in natural fabrics but you will pay for the quality. The upside is having a smaller closet with clothing that lasts. I have found most of such clothing either thrifting, handsewing/knitting, on Etsy, or just with paying attention in retail stores (some will offer better fabrics, but some will only carry the plastics and aren't worth looking into). Occasionally I have splurged on a beloved new piece. Just like food, read the labels 😉

We are still celebrating Christmas here, in fact only halfway in today. Why have 4 weeks of Advent and only one day to celebrate? We celebrate by having plenty of family time (hikes, new puzzles, board games...), solitude (reading all those new books!), and having people over for brunch, lunch, and suppers. It's a good time to reconnect with God, ourselves, and others.
Yesterday evening I made up a full gallon of Russian Tea. Zounds, it was good. I used orange ceylon tea, 8 oranges, 6 lemons, plenty of cinnamon and cloves, and a bit of pineapple juice for sweetness. It's delicious hot and full of vitamin C! The only way to go wrong with it is to google some recipe and start with some canister of pseudo orange flavored "drink".
Anyhow, good coffee morning and Merry continuing Christmas ☕️

Well the hawthorn has fallen, but I've left it for the wildlife this winter. Same for the old apple tree, where I noticed a rabbit run to for shelter. Winter really is beautiful, and though plenty is decomposing, there is a lot of growth happening under the scenes, waiting for the right time.
