#NotJustBikes video pointing out that route-finding apps are very cars-first. Sadly also true for (most?) #OpenStreetMaps wayfinding, the only cycle-specific one I found doesn't work in Australia.
The really annoying part was that even when I was very close to home it still tried to get me to backtrack and use the motorway for the last couple of kilometres.
"Prefer quiet streets over motorways" isn't an available option.

would the Australian approach work? It looks complex because pensioners vigorously resist "it's just a benefit, like the dole or the disability pension". So there's a separate set of rules that are somewhat more generous (and the base rate is much higher for mixed reasons, some good, some bad).

we can buy kangaroo meat in the supermarket, even the major chains.
My frustration is not being able to buy pest meat, I can buy goat and camel etc but only the farmed versions and I don't want to encourage that.
The USA should be eating more bison and less beef. Step one: recreate the millions of bison that used to wander the land. Apparently they give ice camels a run on the "bad tempered and good at conveying it" scale

counterpoint is the agricultural land that can't be cropped, like much of Australia. Ideally we'd eat the animals that grow there rather than introduced pest species, but we can't grow crops for people to eat.
That said, people in the US eat far more animal product than in other countries. Even dropping to European levels would be a huge win.

1: Scientists prepare a long and detailed report
2: politicians decide that even though the report errs on the side of optimism it is too scary, so they tone it down
3: media under-report the risks and over-report groups with an interest in downplaying the risk
4: people move right along as though nothing is happening

going rigid is also done, but police have a habit of "accidentally" breaking parts on the people who do that. Floppy is safer, although cops occasionally push holds until the person screams (... because otherwise how would they know they'd reached the limit of motion of the joint?)
The main point is that cops will *always* complain about protesters.

just don't get it. If I was forced to watch/listen to it for longer than a few seconds I could grow to hate it, but that hasn't happened.
It's a lot better than, say, nicotine or heavy metal music in that it's not inherently damaging or exploitive. But like those things it's not for me.

yep. I read too much to be able to deal with physical books any more. At school it was fine getting a box of books from the library every week, now that I've experienced the joy of a liseuse I can't go back. Not least when travelling.
For a while I had an MFD purely for the sheet-fed A3 scanner, I'd buy a box of second hand books occasionally and scan/OCR them.
But these days my local library lends ebooks!

One thing missing from a lot of the modelling of nuclear impact on the grid is how across the board price increases affect the viability of going off grid.
Right now the "average household" in NSW costs about $20,000 to go off grid if they have the roof space etc for PV. That's dropping fast as battery prices fall.
When thousands of households start seeing $5,000/year bills vs $10,000 to cut the cable, things might get really ugly.
Especially if there's regular power cuts.

In happy news I am home from my 90 minute round trip picking up 40kg of aluminium. Mostly on bike paths, a few quiet streets, crossed three busy roads. Left turns were tricky but the load pivots a bit on the trailer
Nice man in al shop "you can't carry 6.5m lengths on a bicycle"... five minutes later he grabs his phone and starts shooting video. We learn something every day 😉
It's about 35°C right now so I've had a cold shower and a drink.

The police use this regularly as a threat against protesters because the punishments under the terrorist laws are horrific, even by the standards of Australia's other anti-protest laws.

"well actually" that's copaganda. The plod have gone to court because they can't legally refuse a "Notice of Intention" any other way. That notice gives protesters limited exemptions from some laws, without it the protest is still legal and still happening.
An actual injunction against people visiting the port would be a much bigger deal but that hasn't happened (and is IMO unlikely to)

also, you can very likely add a separate, extra MPPT with extra solar feeding the battery with DC. Especially if it's a 48V battery that will be a pretty DIY-able option.
So you may find you put 2 strings of 18 for the official system, then the other 12 panels that fit on your roof become four strings of 3 feeding one or more 150V input MPPTS with 48V LFP profiles on the output.

I'd be more inclined to plan how to completely cover the roof, choosing panels accordingly, then sit down with a spreadsheet.
You will inevitably find that panel A at 30c/W fits 37 = 11,234W, panel B is lower power and 40c/W but fits 60 panels = 10900W *and* you can do 5 strings of 12 or something that actually works as an array.
If you like playing with numbers it's great fun :)

prices tend to be local, especially for second hand panels. (=lower environmental impact). Trina is a solid brand, San Tan I've never heard of (local retailer?)
Flip side, a physically larger system has more area to attract damage, and more cost for mounting hardware.

Depending on your exact risks, a 100W-200W roof-mount panel might be a better option. Either mount it on the roof and leave it there, or store it in your house/garage and drag it out when you need it. But if you do that think about how you're going to actually use it, and ideally use it regularly (that's how you know it still works).
Depending on latitude and eaves mounting it vertically on a sun-facing wall can be surprisingly effective.

I have a 15-ish year old 5W solar panel that's encased in fibreglass and cost similar per watt to permanently mounted panels. It's only ~5mm thick and no aluminium frame though. Something like that rather than a "portable" let alone "flexible" panel is IMO much better unless you intend actually carrying it on your back for many hours. But these days probably want 20W rather than 5W.
I've taken that panel bicycle touring and kayaking for months at a time.

it's interesting to compare that to the pollution footprint from fossil plants as well. Especially where fracking is used you often get a disturbingly large plume of unhealthy air and groundwater. But just the "soot zone" (now hopefully metaphorical rather than literal) around and downwind of generators surprises many people by its size and impact.
