In my time is was by stopping the rape of the world's resources and tackling infinite growth... which my generation not only failed to do but made it infinitely worse.

When I finished Moon of the Crusted Snow I immediately wanted a sequel. I also fell in to it, and the sequel is no different.... I soaked it up in two days and was sad when it ended, just because it was done.
Waubgeshig is a wonderful and genuine guy.

I just finished the book Moon of the Turning Leaves, by Waubgeshig Rice, 2023.
It's the sequal to Moon of the Crusted Snow, 2018.
Highly recommend.

It's kind of exhausting trying to 'splain Mastodon and the fediverse to the folks who have been brainwashed by for-profit foreign surveillance networking sites pretending to be "social networks".

delightful! sounds delicious.
...I sliced and began a quick ferment of carrot slices today, for snacking on next week.
Two or three... or four.... days in a salt brine in open jars on the kitchen counter (with red onion and ginger for flavour) and then lidded and in to the fridge for at least a week.

omg that looks PERFECT for getting close around vehicles and in tight spaces around the actual house.
I have a tractor and a huge blower for the bigger spaces (and for my neighbours long driveways) but it doesn't help in those tight spaces.
Some of these battery-powered tools ie this shovel, and weed-cutters etc work better than the old gas-powered ones, I find.
Hows the price, I wonder? I'll look.
(lol, I don't like buying too many things)

Oh how I hear you!
The larger farm I'm just clearing paths to out-lying buildings for access... But the driveway where the cars are has been a pain. And the animals are snowed in.
I woke myself up at 3:30am when the snow was almost finished to brush off the cars & shovel it out for a seventh time.
I did it multiple times so I had much smaller amounts of snow to remove... but it took six hours out of my day and I had less sleep.
hip hurts. elbow, shoulder.

farm notes today:
animals safe and fed, but snowed in. Dogs not wanting to go out.
plowed and shovelled out the farm all day. 7 hours. 3 feet deep, 4-6 foot drifts.
windchill brought it down to a mere -30 celcius... it has been worse. Be prepared.
Shovelled through some of the largest snowdrifts I have seen since I lived in the mountains.
Wind is blowing... drifts will return. Doin' it all again tomorrow morning. At least the snowstorm is over.
lol, I'm sore. need sauna.

Happy to share that I now am aware of ten couples/families who have cancelled their trips to our fascist neighbours country this week, and will not be planning on going any time soon.
...Also, many have decided to minimize all purchases of products from our fascist neighbours.
Making good choices is a start. lol, now Canada has to also deal with our own wanna-be nazis in the form of conservative leadership in this nation.

I was wondering if I should play it safe for the first try, and just salt them... but I also saw a recipe that included cloves and a little cinnamon.
...I add a little dill to some of my ferments. I'll probably try the peppercorns in my next saurkraut.
I do a three-day ferment of carrot sticks before fridging them, and those get onion, garlic, bay leaf, and some chili pepper flakes.

Years ago I wrote a fake proposal for Kelowna City Council about homelessness.
I called it the HRI: Homeless Removal Initiative.
In that fake, offensive, bullshit proposal, I presented a plan to bus homeless people out of Kelowna and drop them in a nearby valley.... where there was literally nothing. Just a road, a creek, trees and mountains.
SOME of the councilors bought it and wanted to propose it in session!! 🤔
You'd think they'd have clued in to how awful it was. NOPE.

long ago I worked- in the bush, tree planting- with one of the drummers for godspeed.
Bruce was a wildcrafter. He knew so much about the forests it was intimidating. He taught me a few things.
He brought recording equipment to the camp and collected the sounds of nature in the northern forests of ontario for a future album.
A really good guy.

One of the most disgusting aspects of the okanagan fruit industry (twenty years ago but I assume it hasn't changed) was the realization that Okanagan Fruit was packed and shipped to warehouses hundreds to thousands of miles away.... and THEN "distributed" from these hubs to grocery stores....
This meant that some BC apples that were picked literally a few miles from a store were trucked far far far away and then back to the local grocery store....
Unbelievable.

AMERICAN-owned grocery chains determine product placement in CANADIAN stores. Years ago, as part of a food movement in BC, we established that Canadian stores should be pushing Canadian Foods, but our major grocery chains were not on board. Many took their orders from San Francisco.
After that: Let Fruit Pickers UNIONIZE, and give farm laboureres more rights.
It's been a while since I was in it. I'll think some more about your question.

In the Okanagan, BC Tree Fruits just filed for bankruptcy. They have been fully behind squeezing out Canadian labourers to save money on cheaper foreign workers. They have struggled. Clearly their plan only delayed the inevitable. Their industry is presently not sustainable
....I feel like I need to absolutely clarify that no TFWorkers are to blame for this.
The industry used the lure of TFW's to squeeze Canadian labourers like me out of the industry and avoid unions.

The biggest problem Canada has in the BC fruit market is the USA. Even at peak apple season in the Okanagan, American apples (usually washington) are at the front of the grocery stores shelves.
Fruit-dumping makes the industry in Canada very expensive. TFW's are cheaper and they are subsidized. Farmers liked that.
But it doesn't solve the problem, and eventually the fruit industry in the Okanagan will be unsustainable the way its going.

NOW farmers get to charge hundreds of dollars in "rent" to the people who live & work their land. Living arrangements used to be provided as part of your labour. I never paid a cent to live where I worked. The new TFW's that took over my jobs did & do. (Lodging is part of the farming job. You lodge your labourers.)

I was a (Canadian) "fruit-picker" for ten years. I migrated across Canada seasonally. Planted trees in Northern ON in spring/summer, went west to BC & pick fruit in the summer/fall, tended horses in the winter back in Ontario.
In 2000, picking apples in BC paid 1979 wages still. Labourers like me were often called "gypsies" by locals.
By 2003, farmers found out that using temporary foreign workers could save them even MORE money than paying Canadian labourers 1979 wages.
